I don't mind subscriptions for something that is work related. I pay anyway for yearly upgrades for Adobe, Office, Finale, Sibelius, Maple and now some have switched to subscriptions which costs about the same anyway. I'm pretty sure this means the pro Mac apps will switch to subscription. I think the people complaining the most about subscriptions never paid for shareware back in the day let alone pro apps.

Given the prevalence of bit copiers and pirate sites, I doubt many users paid for much of anything back in the day. I remember computer club meets that essentially were software swap meets.

Subscriptions are a way to fight piracy, look at how many games, for example, are subscription on Android vs pay.

Final Cut Pro & Logic Pro on iPadOS, now do Xcode...

As for third-party apps, Blender & World of Warcraft would be awesome...

Anyone think future iPad Pro units may have higher RAM capacities, maybe a bump to 24GB or 32GB...?

Still want to see a Mac (Pro) Cube though...

It used to be kinda like that in the past. Each new OS was around $129 before it got discounted to $29 and then eventually free as we have now

Will the macOS version switch to subscription only as well? Or remain as one time purchase?

I wish it was included with Apple One

That's their entertainment services bundle.

Yea, it was interesting how they went from "always free" on the Apple ][ series to various iterations of pay/free for MacOS. Part of it was, IIRC, driven by accounting rules.

I use my iPad Pro with a USB-C hub. Aux in and audio out. I can connect my guitar and midi keyboard and over-ear headphones. Works great. AU plug-ins work with GarageBand but Logic should open my projects and I can continue from there, likely using the same set up I already have.
that's awesome! hope Logic treats you well if you begin using it; I do continue to be amazed at how capable GarageBand is for a free app on iPad. :)

It’s much more reasonable to sell a 300$ software on Mac that on an iPad (a device that cost less than half compared to a MacBook Pro). Also, 49$ per year is much more affordable than Adobe, so i don’t think that it is all that bad
They should give us the choice. I probably would have bought it if it was possible, but I'm not subscribing to any iOS, iPadOS or macOS app. I just hope they won't do that on macOS too.

They’re probably doing subscriptions because the App Store doesn’t support paid upgrades.

Logic Pro X has had free updates forever. If you bought it in 2012 at release, you've paid nothing for any upgrade since. 100% they'll be trialling this as a subscription on the Mac apps too. Likely with cross-platform entitlements for the one price.

iCloud plus is not entertainment

This is such a BS argument. “Pay us subscriptions or we can’t survive!” and then as soon as companies start charging subscriptions they announce record profits. The consumer always loses with subscriptions. Always.

The way I see it, there are two main benefits to the consumer of subscriptions (and I don't mean "paying less monthly", as that adds up and the "benefit" is only temporary and/or illusory):

1. Subscriptions allow you to cancel at any time. This makes the most sense with TV channel subscriptions, or something else you might need only occasional use of. Less so with pro apps that you need for work or use regularly.
2. Subscriptions force companies to pay attention to their app. A one-time payment years ago means the app can be easily abandoned. People paying monthly for something means the app needs regular upgrades and fixes or the subscriptions will be canceled. Maybe this one is more aspirational, but I've at least noticed it in practice with some apps.

In general, subscriptions are a way of milking the most money out of consumers, but I can't say that they have no positives.

Sweet. They release a video for music creation software and don’t feature a single musical instrument. Yay more iPad music. 🙄

Certainly a calculated move by Apple to try and sell more high-end iPads.

Well... I was just working on a project this week thinking about how unbelievable the value of FCPX is, and wondering if it will be that way forever. And now it seems I'm getting a hint of an answer. Subscription models... what a flipping pain in the bum.
