I do hope they fix how iPadOS handles external hard drives. At the moment, there is no eject option for external drives. This means if you have an App running either in the foreground or sometimes even in the background that has access to the drive it will be instantly corrupted on disconnect. Sometimes the corrupted drive is fixed when you plug it back into the iPad but most of the time it simply won't recognise the drive. You then have to connect it to a Mac and mount it. That will fix the corruption and it will work on an iPad again.

And how will FinalCut Libraries be handled? Can I simply open them on either platform or do I have to import / export every time I want to switch between the two. That would be seriously painful.

Well I for one breathed a huge sigh of relief when it was clear I wouldn’t have to spend a huge amount of money upfront on FCP - £50 for a year that’s a much better deal. Besides I spend £12 per week in Starbucks - that’s a luxury item i can easily drop or cut back on if i need to.

I pay USD6.00 a month for my full-featured PDF to text converter. I can stop subscription anytime, and will probably do so when I retire in a couple of months. So USD4.99 is not bad for iPad FCP and LP. I'd only use it for infrequent field recording projects anyway.

I laugh at those fingerprint people while they use their ipads and iphones constantly. It's no difference.
Indeed, I never thought of it that way. Smartphones and tablets are touch-driven devices, so if you're adverse to touch screens to begin with, it's better not to use such devices at all.

Personally, after many years of using Macs and non-touch screen-equipped Windows PCs, I really found it an enjoyable and novel experience when I picked up a Surface Pro. I was really surprised to find how many touch-capable Windows PCs there are out there. Being able to interact with the content onscreen via touch or pen brings another interesting dimension to the technology... and yes, we've been doing this for many years already with our smartphones and tablets 🙃

You've touched on a raw nerve with many users with that comment... and that's a totally separate discussion that's been discussed here in many different threads.

(For the record, I agree, and am prepared to be "torn to shreds" by the masses here who hate to get fingerprints on their screens, or think that macOS will never work well with a touch-based UI, yadda yadda.)
To be fair, MacOS controlled by a touch screen would be horrible, just the same way Windows 11 controlled by a touchscreen is horrible.

love the subscription mode!!, FCP iPad wont be my default setup, but I could use it in the go if need just for the time I need. This will be cheaper than buying standalone app

Actually seems like a smart business practice from Apple whether you agree with it or not.

Classic halo effect. You’re essentially getting a 30 day trial for 4.99, afterwards if you like it you may be inclined to upgrade to the macOS version. If you stick with the iPad version, then it would take around 3-4 years to meet the cost of the Mac versions.

It should also be reiterated that these apps are not 1:1 with the Mac versions; they are their own releases and clearly are prosumer orientated, given project compatibility is only iPad > Mac, not Mac > iPad.

Even the marketing is going after the YouTube generation, not Hollywood/studio professionals.

But it's not horrible. As touch ONLY, yes. doing thing with touch on my windows 11 pc is AWESOME. It's two different things. it's not a black and white situation. Yes, as having ONLY touch, both would be horrid, HOWEVER, using touch on them for different things is great. Another comment that I love....controlling the OS via touch would be terrible. Well yes. Having touch enabled on your devices is not terrible. adjusting things in content creation apps, drawing on screen instead of using crappy mouse interface to try to replicate a pen/pencil etc are all amazing on my systems now.

Ah right well I don’t do any content creation anywhere, so it’s not a use case I consider. My laptops are for gaming and general web browsing.

This goes back to my other point I have made many times before. Just because a person does not use a feature does not mean NOBODY does. Just because you would not use touchscreen, does not mean NOBODY would.

So iPad becomes the outdoor streaming tool. All you need is an iPad to record, edit and upload your video. You don't need anything else.

"To be fair"? Not sure what is so "fair" about a single-sided opinion stated bluntly, with no background or supporting statements.

Anyway, @The point and shoot pro said it eloquently. For content creation, touch screens can be a convenience, in that you can interact with the content in a more tactile way than with just the mouse and keyboard. On the other hand, like you said, for gaming and for general Web browsing, touch screens don't add much if any value to the experience.

Absolutely, but if we added every feature that every person might want available, our devices would be unrecognisable. Product design, by its very nature, is a series of compromises. Apple have obviously decided that a touchscreen in a Mac isn't a compromise they are prepared to make (right now, anyway). They probably see it as a highly compromise UI for that input mechanism, plus it would cannibalise the iPad market.

There will be a 30-day free trial available for each app, after that each app will be $5/month or $50/year...

You’ll own nothing and Tim will be very happy

I suppose after the succces of streaming etc it makes sense tbh
Yes, sadly consumers let this happen by supporting music and video streaming services instead of rejecting the business model.

It's heading the same way for gaming too, and people are demanding Apple support game streaming apps, rather than pushing back.

We get what we deserve.

I don't think it would do anything to ipad markets. I have an iPad and I would never use my 2 in 1 dell system for that. It's just too big and heavy. However, while editing and creating on my dell, I love the pen, touch and interaction of it. Apple, I think is missing the point and the boat. They are only thinking in "the sky is falling iPad would die" scenario. Not the ALOT of new customers would buy macbooks with 2 in 1 design and touch implementation.

As mentioned before, watch snazzylabs video on the macOS touch topic. Apple has already made "touch" modifications to MacOS, it's just a matter of time IMO. They have been behind the 8 ball in this regard and it's time!

Oh, as for adding EVERY feature...A touchscreen does not change ANYTHING in the design of the mac. Doing a two in one with foldable screen would be minimal at best. SO really there is no design change other than a 180 hinge which is easy, and does not make the device wonky, weird in design or clumsy.

Hopefully it won’t add too much cost for you!

Hopefully Apple will maintain non-touch options for lower cost options for those of us who don’t need or want a touchscreen.
