Well... That was unexpected.
True, and unexpected in the sense that I would have thought they'd be spending all their development energies on fixing some of the long time issues with FCP X, in particular the audio plugin incompatibilities. What so now we're going to have them updating the crap out of the iOS versions and neglect the macOS version...jeesh.

Happy to pay for $300 for Aperture (remember that program?) that Apple made. But, not happy to be paying $10/month for Aperture subscription (if that existed).

Why would a (theoretical) sub for Aperture cost $10/month when the FCP & Logic subs are each $5/month, and the $50/year sub cost would bring overall cost down as well...?

Lame that they're going with a subscription model.
This. Well, kinda. I don’t mind a subscription model, especially at this price. Far more people can afford to use it now, but I don’t like that they decline to offer an outright purchase option, unless that comes with a MacOS purchase, but it seems these are being kept separate.

Subscription model? Cringe.
Ya, because it makes so much more sense to pay $300 a year for updates. At $50 a year, you’d have to use a $300 single paid version for 6 years without buying an update before it would be the same price. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Ya, cause a $50 a year cost vs $300 a year cost for up-to-date software is such a gouge…

where are you getting $300 a year from?

I disagree that Apple charging a subscription for a software = Apple will charge a subscription for an OS. They’re two entirely different things. I think this is fearmongering.

Seems likely. This is probably Apple testing the waters for their "full fat" desktop programs. If it's a success then they might go ahead with making macOS a subscription based OS.

It's nice that Apple is releasing their OS for free but they will want to make more money so either they'll start charging a sub or they'll do what Microsoft is doing and start stuffing it with ads. Actually, if they copy Microsoft they'll charge you for the OS and stuff ads in anyway. While I don't think anyone in their right mind pays full price for Windows you still really need to pay for it some way or another.
I disagree, charging a subscription for a software isn’t the same as charging a subscription for an OS. Nor do I think it can be construed as a “sign” that Apple’s going to charge a subscription for macOS. They’re two totally different things.

It’s a wonder that here people have been requesting Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro on iPad Pro, even to the extent of whining and complaining about the iPad Pro saying “it’s not a Pro device because it doesn’t have Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro”, and now that the iPad has these softwares, these people are whining about a $50 a year subscription.

And now all the people who were complaining the iPad Pro isn’t a “pro device” are going to probably find something else to complain about. Some people will never be happy no matter what Apple does to improve the iPad. 🙄

Apple does charge a subscription for macOS, it’s those pesky extra $200 payments for 16 GB of RAM.
That helps pay not only for your macOS, but the macOS of all the people who got the 8 GB of RAM model.

That’s the price of the software, and I didn’t realize that they’ve been using the same version for a while with minor updates. I still think $50 a year is very reasonable, and I’d be far more likely to pay $50 a year than $300. I’d have to use the $300 single-purchase version for 6 years for the cost to be the same, and I don’t think it’s very reasonable to expect a software company to support a software with free major feature updates for 6 years. Devs have to be paid for their work, so I think $50 a year is extremely reasonable.

By that logic, then that’s a single purchase, not a “subscription”. You only buy the Mac once.

terrifying thought... what if... the OS itself starts becoming subscription (on all devices). just taking the imperative of companies to drive endless growth to its logical, dystopian end 😬
I seriously doubt they would charge for the OS as it's required to use the hardware. My best guess is any specialized pro apps they develop going forward will be subscription.

It wouldn't surprise me if they stop updating Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X for MacOS and simply perpetuate the iPad OS versions with a subscription which of course, should run on MacOS as well. On Apple's part, this would set an example of developing one app for multiple platforms.

$49 per year and people are complaining? For working Pros, that's a really low operating expense. Pennies compared to renting locations, hiring models, assistants, etc.

Just my guess but I would think "pros" would be using something more like a Mac Studio or MBP with much more horsepower than an iPad. Maybe they're pricing it for people who already have FCP and LPX on desktop as a supplemental app for those on the go with their iPads. Hard to say.

Ohhhh I'm actually excited it's a subscription model! I've always wanted to use Final Cut Pro, but never wanted to spend all the money and a lot of times my uses come in small random times (maybe need it for a couple weeks, once a year), so I like this a lot, saves me money and lets me use it more.

But generally yea subscription models suck, but for my specific use-case, this is absolutely game-changing
I see the value in that, but they're counting on your forgetting to cancel or not knowing if/ when you should cancel. People get busy and can lose track of all the subs.

Final Cut Pro & Logic Pro on iPadOS, now do Xcode...

As for third-party apps, Blender & World of Warcraft would be awesome...

Anyone think future iPad Pro units may have higher RAM capacities, maybe a bump to 24GB or 32GB...?

Still want to see a Mac (Pro) Cube though...

Try Steam's remote gaming feature/ app for iPad. It works quite well, and sometimes I don't notice I'm playing remotely. I haven't tried WoW, but I think you might be able to add it to Steam manually.

I saw a test between a 16GB and a 32GB MBP on Youtube (after I paid for the 32GB CTO). The difference in speed was practically negligible. I'm assuming this is because the SSD is so fast, the use of virtual memory (on the SSD) doesn't slow down the Mac (or iPad) very much. That being said, it could be the low memory amounts of the iPad aren't less limiting than one might thing.

The App Store makes it pretty easy to manage your subscriptions. it's right at the top of your Account screen.
I agree, but what I'm saying is they're counting on the average person forgetting to cancel.

Case in point... I've paid two months of a World of Warcraft subscription but have only had time to play it twice in that time. I should cancel it, but I might want to play it in the near future. Often I forget I'm paying for it.

It's the gym membership essentially.
