If it doesn’t replace your ID because of someone else’s limitation than it doesn’t do anything.

But I guarantee some cop will claim their reader is broken, and since the phone is the only ID they have with them (cause the state said it was valid) the cop will touch the phone.
Then they have no way to read your ID. There is nothing presented on the screen. They need a reader. If they take your locked phone to a reader in their car they have to bring the locked phone back which the phone will tell you what data is requested and you have to confirm with bio-metrics.

This is years away from replacing being able to not carry a physical ID. You do realize this right?

You all realize this is just a baby step. I can finally go through the airport (Like any of us are traveling right now) and not have my ID and phone in my hand walking through security. I can just scan my watch and be done with it.

A great step forward surprised New York is not part of it as we've done a good job with covid pass working with IBM.

Why are so many talking about this like it's unary? I use ApplePay but still carry my CC and debit card with me. I use AP when it's convenient and and swipe the rest of the time.
Will I load my license on my phone, hell yeah. Will I use it in every situation, hell no.

Yup - if you're comfortable handing your unlocked phone to a cop who then takes it out of your control, then you do you.

Me, I'll stay with physical ID.
You don't have to unlock your iPhone to access your wallet.
Nevermind, I re-read the article...

Ok great but… since we need to show our boarding pass at the same time (assuming that’s also digital), wouldn’t that cause a bottleneck here, having to do one authentication at a time? Or does this system somehow allow you to present boarding credentials at the same moment?

So If i live in georgia and have this digital ID but travel to a non participating state like new york and want a beer what do i do? Will New york accept the digital Georgia license? Or do I have to carry around another physical ID

How about the state department? I'd like to see my passport card (which I use as ID instead of my driver's license in every context other than when driving).

The passport card is superior because it doesn't have my address on it and it is also proof of citizenship (when it matters).

yea, don't really want to be handing my phone over to the cops....

i'll keep my physical ID
If you read the article you won’t hand it over they will have a scanner like system that reads the information just like the Apple Pay works you don’t give your phone to the cashier

I’m in Arizona and we have a QR code solution now. I’m excited to see how this Apple one will work. I also am glad my state seems to be on the forefront of this stuff. I also can use Apple Pay/PayPass everywhere compared to say, California. Which is sad as that’s where Apple is from.
It's not QR code. We have a PDF417 formatted bar code on the back. ;)

Yep just give up pieces of privacy bit by bit for the convenience of carrying less stuff in your pockets like a wallet. Isn't enough to have your phone fair game to the border patrol. Soon you will hand over your phone for anything I guess...The sheep will squeal "Its convenient to not carry my wallet".

Really hope this hits the UK sooner rather than later. It's great we can already have reward cards (Tesco clubcard for example), bank/gift cards of course but this would really let me ditch the wallet. Any form of age verification ID be great, as would the "Covid Passport"
Interestingly, the DVLA were working on this as far back as 2016:

Haven’t heard anything since so I’ve no idea whether or not they’re still planning to implement this.

Can't wait to hear the conspiracy theories about security risks of having your drivers license scanned into your phone. Hope it comes to Michigan soon.
Considering how often things that appear innocent actually do present security risks, I think you may a bit too smug in labeling security concerns “conspiracy theories.”

I’m actually not looking forward to surrendering my phone to law enforcement instead of just my license, and for that very reason I’ll probably keep my physical license in my glovebox for any “license and registration” unpleasantries. Would you consider that a conspiracy theory or just irrational paranoia. 😂

Guess you all missed you would never hand your phone to anyone.

Guess you didn't understand my comment.

Extremely rare for bartenders or servers in these parts to have mobile payment terminals, let alone some additional hardware to parse an electronic ID. Similarly, many grocery or liquor store cashiers around here still aren't equipped for NFC/touchless payment and thus also are likely to take a long time to be on board with electronic ID for proof of age.
