Never would have thought I'd see impotent rage on a mac forum, but, here we are
Well, if rando people want to patronize and condescend other rando people, I guess this is the place.

Too bad some of us don't care to play that game. Grace and respect goes a long way.

That is, unless MR wants this to become another Twitter.

I have this sinking feeling that Florida will be last to get it, if ever 😔

Pennsylvania will be DEAD LAST. I guarantee it. The most backward horse and buggy DMV in the country. I was absolutely surprised when I could actually finally get a Real ID from Penn DOT. They drug their feet for over a decade on that one. Totally ridiculous.

PA would still be using teletypes between offices if they could get parts for them. They're just terrible when it comes to new technology.

I will say this. The folks actually working (not running) the DMV in PA are really nice folks. Every time I went there for something (when I got married and my wife got her PA DL, and when we got our real ID's a few years back) everyone was super nice and helpful. Can't say enough about the staff there.

As far as the cops looking at your phone? Cops stopping cars aren't detectives looking to dig through your phone. They're either doing crash reports in the weather, or stuck on traffic duty. In either case, it's about getting through the calls or making the management imposed number of "community contacts" a shift.

Either way, most of them are looking to be done with you and finish their shift. The notion that YOUR phone has anything of particular interest on it on a specific day to that particular cop that stopped you is almost kinda cheeky.

If the cops stop you and are interested on what's on your cell phone, a warrant has been written to search it all ready, and you stink at being a criminal because these "atom splitters" figured your stuff out before you knew they did.

I know this from experience.....

I fly all the time and never once has I had to hand over my phone. You scan it yourself on customer facing readers.
It would be awesome if you could tie your ID to your boarding pass, i.e select boarding pass, set your phone on the reader, it reads the boarding pass, then auto switches it to ID, without ever having to touch the phone. (or even a double tap on the back of the phone to switch it)

For those whiners out there. Most digital licences in Australia (yes some states have had this for years) have a QR code on their licence. You don't need to hand over your phone, the police just need to scan it.

yea, don't really want to be handing my phone over to the cops....

i'll keep my physical ID

Forget cops or TSA, how about how long until bartenders and servers and cashiers are on board?

I still regularly get surprised remarks from cashiers who've never seen someone use ApplePay with their watch... doesn't make me hopeful that an on-phone DL is gonna be recognized as valid anytime soon.

Heck no. So if I need to show a police officer by DL I have to give them my phone. THen they take the phone to their patrol car which could contain equipment to copy data off my phone. Then we will have lawsuits around all of this.

Maybe I need more coffee, but I wouldn’t give this to the police, and I suspect most business won’t accept it for quite some time.
Guess you all missed you would never hand your phone to anyone. For this to be accepted they have to have a reader just like a card reader. You would tap your phone on the law enforcement/bar tending device and it would transmit the necessary data.

Maybe read the Apple announcement.

Presenting a driver’s license or state ID to TSA: Once added to Wallet, customers can present their driver’s license or state ID to the TSA by simply tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch at the identity reader. Upon tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch, customers will see a prompt on their device displaying the specific information being requested by the TSA. Only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID is the requested identity information released from their device, which ensures that just the required information is shared and only the person who added the driver’s license or state ID to the device can present it. Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their ID.

To further clarify if a reader is not available yet this doesn't do anything and you still need a physical ID.

Anymore tinfoil conspiracies I can debunk by reading for two minutes?

why am I not surprised California is not on the list? 😂 as usual, a California founded company does something that is adopted by California years after it’s created.

Still leads to a possible result of the cops taking your phone. No TY.

Wow, did you really go back and start "disliking" my posts from years ago because I called you out on something?

If it doesn’t replace your ID because of someone else’s limitation than it doesn’t do anything.

But I guarantee some cop will claim their reader is broken, and since the phone is the only ID they have with them (cause the state said it was valid) the cop will touch the phone.

I would have expected Washington, California, and Texas to be at least on the "to follow" list, since they all have tech as a significant portion of their economies - WA and CA for decades. Seems like a bit miss, for Inslee, Newson, and Abbot who should have been championing this in a peri-/post-covid world.

I’m in Arizona and we have a QR code solution now. I’m excited to see how this Apple one will work. I also am glad my state seems to be on the forefront of this stuff. I also can use Apple Pay/PayPass everywhere compared to say, California. Which is sad as that’s where Apple is from.

Not long ago I was thinking "How cool would it be...?" But, lately, I feel I've been given cause to reconsider all this dependency on tech and how much of my life I've entrusted to "my" digital conveniences. So, wonderful as I once thought this would have been, I believe I'll be taking a hard pass.

From the Press Release:
  • Driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet are only presented digitally through encrypted communication directly between the device and the identity reader, so users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device.
So no reason why it wouldn’t work with AW

What about others states including mine ? Who should I call in my state government agencies to coperate with Apple to offer the same features.

Did you read the press release or any of the multiple posts regarding what you are speaking of? This is not a physical ID like an insurance card you may have a photo of on your phone. This only works with a reader, which can only be used by TSA at this time. If you give your phone to one of us millions of rogue cops, that’s on you. 🙄
