No it’s not. There is a big difference in aspect ratio on the iPad mini making it quite a bit bigger.
Agreed, BUT, the original Samsung Galaxy Tab was 7.0 inches 16:9
10, which is 138 cm2. My rough calculation puts 16 Pro Max at 115 cm2, not counting rounded corners. Compare that to the original iPhone at around 36 cm2. I think it’s fair to say that 16 Pro Max is a mini tablet, at least as much as it is a maxi phone.

And yes, I will keep my 13 Mini another year.

Nothing wrong with wanting a big phone. I absolutely love the size of my iPad Mini, but if I had a 16 Pro Max I probably wouldn’t have an iPad. It’s a good size for an all-purpose device. I just think it’s a really crappy size for a phone, which is still a significant use case for my… phone.

If the Airpods or Airpods Pro would actually fit my ears, or if any of the headphones that do were actually any good at speech input, I might reconsider. But since I’m still holding my phone to my ear a lot of the time, a 7 inch phone is not going to happen.

16 Pro Max a "big phone"? :)

Funny thing is that 16 Pro Max is 0,01 inches (yes, you read that right) narrower than 12 Pro Max. But, that being said, 16 Pro Max is now a WHOPPING 0,09 inches taller than 12 Pro Max. Talking about sizes getting bigger. ;)

Camera control button should be useful. Not so impressed with the new colour. Have to see in person. Looks similar to the 12 Pro gold.

All about AI, which we don't get in the EU because we are not allowed to have nice things. Guess I'll buy it anyway.

Everyone here says “it’s the same phone as last year”, but Apple added a whole new multitouch interface to the iPhone. A dedicated camera button is awesome. Sure the prerecorded presentations are boring now, but I think there’s some great new features considering this is most people’s primary camera.

Yes, you will get. Works right now in the beta ;)

EDIT: It works for developers so they can develop apps. :( The workaround is to utilize an Apple ID from another region. I also have one inside the EU, and one outside the EU. The EU is really going too far; limited intelligence on the phone (but macOS is allowed), also no iPhone mirroring, and no shareplay. Makes me wonder how some Google Android Gemini efforts are so different. Especially so as Apple has left the systems open for third-party developers to integrate.

On reflection, the Glowtime event was very emblematic of an Apple without a Steve Jobs-like figure trying unsuccessfully to pull a reality distortion field like we all know Steve well could have.

E.g.
  • Introducing a new camera shutter button with fiddly controls that doesn't do the one thing you would expect a shutter button to do - lock subject exposure and focus. "Coming later in the year".
  • Introducing the Apple Intelligence suite (memojis, image gen, image intelligence etc.). "Coming later in the year, and only in English".
  • AirPods hearing aid mode. Not yet FDA approved. "Coming later in the year, subject to approval"
  • Re-introducing a "revolutionary" action button that nobody wants or uses.
  • Watch Ultra, like the old one, but "now available in black"!
  • AirPods Max. Now with colors!*
  • "We have BIG news for the five people still using the Vision Pro. Congratulations! We know you are stretched for cash so you can now film a spatial video using a regular iPhone!"
  • "Best battery life on an iPhone only available on iPhone Pro Max!"**
* And a USB-C port brought to you by the EU regulators.
** We may have reduced the battery life on the iPhone Plus a teensy, weensy bit, and oh yeah, it's probably best not to mention that we will discontinue it next year because we were really, really hoping you would buy the Pro Max instead.

Thank you for adding that completely irrelevant information to our discussion about screen size.

I can't tell from your post what it is you are missing: Actual news, or someone to frantically present non-news as something actually interesting (which Jobs would very often do). I prefer the former, by far.

Wait, is it confirmed that Apple Intelligence won't be available in Europe?

I'm saying that Steve (or someone like him) could have pulled off an event full of vaporware and questionable things much better than the B-team at Apple did yesterday. Not saying vaporware is necessarily a good thing.

Steve would have shared the vision and got us all happy and even pumped that waiting for AI "done right" was a good thing for the world.

Supported languages: Apple Intelligence will initially be available in English (US) in most regions around the world. In December, Apple Intelligence will add support for English (Australia), English (Canada), English (New Zealand), English (South Africa), and English (UK). Next year, Apple Intelligence will expand to more languages, like Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish.

After you have turned on Apple Intelligence, it will continue to work when you travel to other regions around the world.

For European Union residents: Apple Intelligence will not currently work if you are in the EU and if your Apple ID Country/Region is also in the EU. If traveling outside of the EU, Apple Intelligence will work when your device language and Siri language are set to a supported language.

For China residents: Apple Intelligence will not currently work for iPhone models purchased in China mainland. For supported iPhone models purchased outside of China mainland, Apple Intelligence will not currently work if you are in China mainland and if your Apple ID Country/Region is also in China mainland.

Once Apple Intelligence is available in the EU or China mainland, previously purchased iPhone models that support Apple Intelligence will be able to activate and use it in that region.

So many people mad about this, like y’all need to touch grass.

The phone segment is a very mature industry and improvements will be incremental. I’d rather them refine the phone than throw in some flimsy gimmick like folding screens.

I’ll be buying, I’m coming from a 13PM which to me feels like a good upgrade cycle now.

Spot on with why is Apple being so tiptoeish about this. I've been on the iOS ecosystem for over 10 years, never used an Android, but now that EU and Apple are at it I'm looking at Google offerings as well. No iPhone mirroring is a real puzzle, how could any regulation prevent that.

I don't know about mad or angry, but some, myself included, you could probably say are a bit disappointed for sure.

Two years of nothing burgers will do that, especially when Android makers are already delivering a lot of this stuff and have been for a while.

its just incremental upgrades that add up over time, thats the entire point.

you aren't supposed to upgrade every year

My guess would be that it has something to do with a power struggle. The EU has by proxy just fined Apple €13Bn in back taxes through Ireland. Then there is the stuff around the DMA. It is a potentially interesting game, but a difficult one as there isn't direct representation within the EU like I was used to contacting my member of parliament (lived three houses down in the UK) if I had an issue or didn't agree. But this is like representation by proxy so difficult to express disagreement. In the end it may be easier to just get Android which is not the free market and consumer choice. Funny how such an announcement can take such a turn.

100%. Apple and the EU are at war on multiple fronts.

No Apple Intelligence in Europe would be a disaster for Apple EU sales and the stock price.

Apple Intelligence in China is another big question mark for different reasons.

It is a very challenging time for Apple, at a scale that I don't think most realize, given they have bet the farm on this stuff.

AFAIK they haven't announced any date or plan about that. :(

No date has been announced, but Apple did say that they are working on the details of the regulations in Europe and that they have every intention of making Apple Intelligence available in the EU. It's only a matter of time.

Otherwise, it would be like shooting themselves in the foot.
