Thanks to the shortsightedness of Tim Cook and the other Apple leadership, they decided to only release the rather unnecessary but technologically marvelous? iPhone 17 Air. Was there an iPhone 1 through 16 Air?

Anyway, on to year 6 of the iPhone 12 since the 17 is the 6th iteration of the 12. My iPhone 14 Pro Max is essentially the same phone as the 15, 16, and now 17 Pro Max. So no real reason to upgrade.

Apparently Apple was only capable of making the 17 Air and couldn’t potentially hurt sales of that or handle additional development by releasing anything else worthy of forking the road.

Apple today introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Both devices feature a new aluminum unibody design, with the Ceramic Shield now protecting both the front and back sides. Apple says the rear Ceramic Shield is 4x more resistant to cracks compared to the back glass on previous iPhone models.

A larger rear camera plateau houses three 48-megapixel cameras, and the antenna system wraps around it. The upgraded Telephoto camera offers up to 8x optical zoom, which is up from the 5x limit on the iPhone 16 Pro models. Plus, there is now an 18-megapixel front camera with Center Stage support.

Other key features for these devices include an A19 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU for up to 40% faster sustained performance compared to iPhone 16 Pro models, a larger battery, a vapor chamber cooling system for improved thermal management, and much more.

New color options include Silver, Deep Blue, and Cosmic Orange.

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are eSIM-only in Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the U.S., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to Apple. These models are equipped with an even larger battery that fills the space formerly occupied by the physical SIM card tray.

Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro Max offers the longest battery life of any iPhone model ever, with up to 39 hours of video playback per full charge.

In the U.S., the iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 with 256GB of storage, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 with 256GB of storage.
Pre-orders start Friday, September 12, ahead of deliveries to customers and in-store availability beginning Friday, September 19.

Both devices can be configured with an all-new 2TB storage capacity, which is an increase over the previous 1TB maximum.

Apple also announced that iOS 26 will be released on Monday, September 15.

I pretty much always hang on to my phone for at least three years, so this was a low chance of purchasing from the start, but.. no black?

Zero chance.

Extremely strange choice.

They didn’t make this e-sim only worldwide? And the rest of the world lost 2 hours battery life, for an empty hole?
I believe that the Air is the only new iPhone this year that is eSIM only worldwide..

Probably next year for the others?

Most interesting was the GPU upgrade which bodes well for M5, and the C1X and N1 seems impressive. Good for durability with uniform body on the Pros too. Next year is the year.

Cant decide between blue and orange. Blue just looks magnificent on its own, but I could really see that orange shine with a dark green leather case. I´ll probably pick one up by Black Friday. Will take the opportunity to see them in store before I buy.

I won't be the first, or last, to say... no black?? For the first time in iPhone history?? Weird. I mean, why? I don't get it. I'll be curious to hear their thinking on this one. And I'm sure we will as the week unfolds. Prob to so they can bring black back for iPhone 19 or 20 or the fold or something. Or maybe two generate buzz in an otherwise (and debatable) buzz-less cycle?

For those that annually upgrade to the darkest Pro model, what is your plan? Blue Pro? Move down to iPone 17? Air? Skip this cycle? Super interesting and unexpected move, Apple.

Personally, I think the design of the 17 pro is a disappointment. Also think the whole story about thermal conductivity in the presentation is to hide the fact that it's a cost reduction measure vs using titanium. I really like the air, but afraid that the omission of the ultra wide camera prevents me from acquiring it.

Edit: figured the 2TB tier is for the pro max only

For the battery life? I can’t think of any other „feature“.
Battery life, sure. But also other things, like...

Ok, it'd mainly the camera: like the 8x zoom, and camera improvements in general. (He..ck, even the front camera looks brilliant).

And a minor thing: The lanyard attachment on Apple's own cases could tip the scale.

Also, I never really liked my 15 pro. There's something about it that just doesn't spark joy... ;)
