Has anyone tried to "reserve" a phone at the store? I keep getting an error message trying to do this.

Also, what does "reserve" mean - do you still have to wait in line?

i checked online, and it will cost $699 for me to upgrade to the 32 GB model at Launch.

Logic dictates that $175+299 is more attractive than $400+299.

Of course, i could wait until October to buy my phone when the website says i can pay the standard upgrade price, whatever that is, but where's the fun in that? 🙄

Early termination option means you will lose your phone number though. Keep that in mind.

It does seem a little odd that's for sure. o2 will be missing out on at least £250 from me because of the way they've gone about it or the way Apple has told them too.

I see no reason why they can't extend your previous contract, keep you tied down, make you pay £150 or so and then perhaps even add a small amount on each month to cover the rest of the upgrade cost if there actually is one.

Not enough £££'s in that idea for anyone at o2 to give a toss.

I've just remembered why I ditched them before. Only came back for the Jesus phone. Sadly, they'll be enough idiots paying these prices to make a few MR departures inconsequential.

There is only one group of people responsible for rip-off Britain and that is the UK consumer.

So does this mean on 22Jul2009 I can get an iPhone 3GS 32GB for $299? $499? any clarification would be much appreciated!

Sounds like it would be eligible for he $299 upgrade on July 12. Standard upgrade should be $299 and Early upgrade would be $499.

Who cares about speed

when I can't get something like slingbox player over 3g why would I care about loading lame ass web pages faster. The 3g model is plenty fast enough for most content out there now.

Att ruining slingbox and apple refusing to build a physical keyboard makes me actually consider other options. Should not even be close.

Do you read? The Original iPhone was purchased for $499 and $599 with NO SUBSIDIES by AT&T. This is the ONLY reason people were able to gain the subsidy for the 3G iPhone even though they had bought the Original iPhone just 1 year earlier. AT&T gave no benefit, bonus or subsidy on the Original iPhone. Everyone paid full price for the phone.

IPhone 3G to iPhone 3Gs means you got a subsidy 1 year ago for a new 2 year contract. You are not eligible for the subsidy again after just one year. You KNEW this when you entered into your contract last year ... at least you would if you read it.

Uhh...you are not given a written agreement in the Apple store. Before you get insulting, why don't you remember that you did not receive any written information or contracts stating anything about the subsidy in the Apple store. AT&T does not furnish this information.

Also, my 1G I got for $399.99. I was told that it would cost $699.00 to replace. Sounds a little like a subsidy, but once again, nothing in writing proffered at the AT&T store. Why don't you check facts before you shoot your mouth off. I was informing you of my experience and you decide to be belligerent. Show me the document about any subsidy Apple or AT&T has given you at any location upon activating a new iPhone. You can't.

Also, many carriers will give you the subsidy if you agree for another two years. Sprint does it all the time. I know as my office phone is on Sprint and I just got a Samsung Instinct (should be called the Stink) for nothing, and I just reupped my contract in January. So there, read on d-bag.

The same thing happened to me. I'd love to find out which is true because I'd definitely upgrade the shipping, if possible.

Well I'm equally pissed as everyone is. I called AT&T and they said I can just take my parent's upgrade, so "Whew" I don't have to pay $500. I get it for $299 🙂 for the 32 GB Model.

I have a question about this method. What if you have an iphone on your family plan, obviously you can't upgrade, but someone else on the plan can upgrade, can you upgrade THAT phone and use it in place of your 3G without having to buy 2 media plans. That's my fear, i want to upgrade my other phone but in doing so would i have to make it so it has the media plan and my iphone 3g has it as well, or will it just override it because im just using my old phone s an upgrade tool? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Most utilities require it.

Cable, electric, gas, water, cell phones....

They ask for it. It is not required in the U.S. There isn't even a law requiring a SSN. You can establish credit without SSN.

This would be a feasible option (pay the "early termination fee" and then just buy the phone as a "new customer") if you could keep your existing wireless number. But as far as I know, you can't do that if you are going from AT&T to AT&T. If you were terminating to go to Verizon, they could "port" your number for you, but AT&T won't "port" the number from itself.

What blows is that they don't let you "early upgrade" at the subsidized price + $5 per month of service you have left on your original contract or something (similar to the way the early termination fee is calculated... the less time you have left on your contract, the less ETF you have to pay).

Check your account on the AT&T website and you will have access to your full agreement. As for the "many carriers" comment ... that is at the discretion of the carrier, and no carrier is REQUIRED to offer such an option. It has been proven through the years that AT&T DOES NOT offer such options.

Sorry brother but I promise you this is correct!! If your getting that from the website dont trust it!! The website doesnt correct for early upgrades and will only show you 2 year pricing or full retail!! Go to an att store and you will get it for those prices i promise you!

so voice control requires a faster iphone? hmmmmm. even though google uses voice recognition on the iphone. I wonder if there'll be an 'app for that' substitute or will apple decline the entry?

Where did you derive that? Where did you see that you have to have 3GS for voice control? I interpreted it as a iPhone OS 3.0 feature (which will work fine on existing phones.)

Another difference in the hardware of the 3GS is that it supports the update headset with volume control. Perhaps this has something to do with it if you do have to have a 3GS.

Make sure you confirm with an AT&T rep before buying. My response is based upon my belief of the terms. 🙂

I believe we all would like to see some specs on the RAM and processor. Trust that on June 19th, someone will have one broken down the day they get it. Keep an eye peeled for that if the specs do not come out sooner.

I could have swore the first time I tried to use the iPhone 3GS buy page on Apple's site it said $699 (32Gb) and $499 (16Gb) but went back and checked again and got this.

I didn't ever upgrade my current AT&T phone to an iPhone (2G or 3G) so all I'll owe is $299 + $18 to upgrade.🙂

I love the $18 "upgrade fee". It just shows what bloodsuckers they are. So AT&T is getting...what...thousands of dollars for locking you into a new contract, but they just have to add in that $18 fee on top of it? I don't know why that makes me angry, but it does. They will wring you for every penny and then stick out their hand for more, unbelievable. The sooner Apple dumps AT&T, the better for both them and consumers.

I don't get how some people with Iphone 3G plans bought on Day 1 have an eligible upgrade on 7/22/2009. I was a day one iphone buyer for both the first one and 3g and it says I won't be eligible until 12/11/2009.

If the upgrade fee is the $199-299 +$18, then it is correct, and you will have a new 2-year contract to go with it. If it is the $399-699, then it is incorrect and you should call AT&T.

They want to charge me the $18 upgrade fee AND the $18 activation fee for a total of $36. I'm getting a subsidized phone so from what you are saying I should only be charged the upgrade fee. I guess I'll reserve now and call CS later. I sure don't want to wait in line next Fri., even a fast one. Been there, done that.
