Apple Announces iPhone 3G S, Launching June 19th

Sorry is not necessary. 😀 I was trying to catch up to various nomenclature.

So based on various posts here it appears that the 3G owners have to pay the full amount unless they have a voice/data account that bills over $99 per month. For those (I guess I'm included), the upgrade is the 1-year pricing and drops to standard upgrade price on the date that is one year from the last phone upgrade date.
 
Lame, all I really want from the 3G S is the voice control. Useful in states like CA where they word their handsfree law so loosely they could ticket you for looking at your phone the wrong way! Other than voice control the upgrade is not worth it to me! Hopefully I can get the cheaper pricing in July, if not no upgrade for me! Maybe now that there is better bluetooth support some of the existing voice dialing apps can take advantage of that...

Japanese phone companies don't offer their top-of-the line NEW phones to international buyers before their home buyers. Why should Apple? If there is a limited supply, the American buyers should have first right to American products. Besides ... some international destinations will get the iPhone 3Gs on June 19th, while some others wlll have to wait a whole week (oh no). Additional countries will be fed the product over the following months. Rarely is a new item released worldwide on the same day. Think of the volumes that would need to be produced in secrecy to meet a worldwide demand on launch day. Was the Pal Pre released worldwide on June 6?

Does anyone know if there would be any problem with my Mom, who has an old ATT (non-iPhone) phone, if she gets the upgraded model and then gives it to me, and I give her my 3G (and some cash)? A SIM card swap and all should be well, right for both of us, she gets the upgraded phone she wants (and she is find without video editing and barely gets 3G coverage now, so the higher speed 3G is likely to be a pipe dream only for her area for a while) as do I.

Any hiccups with that plan as far as anyone can see?

Check with AT&T reps. Should work fine.

Owners of the original iPhone are eligible for the reduced pricing. You can start an order on-line at the apple store and it will tell you what your price is. I'm glad I held out and didn't get the first 3G version:apple:.

Someone posted the AT&T upgrade rules (and a link to them). Your monthly price plan, length of time with AT&T, etc. are all factors in their eligibility for upgrade discounts.
 
I think I am going to do one of two things
option 1
get the iphone as a new user since my wife's the primary on our family plan. switch sim cards. Then if I do get the full upgrade price on 7/12/09 return the first 3Gs Which will be a 3 weeks and get a refund and I get the phone on launch

Option 2
add a new line instead of a new account and do the same as in option 1 this way if I dont get the upgrade price then I would just pay the $175 for early termination and save close to $300 the

the only problem I see with it is if you cant switch sims then option 2 is more of a risk since option 1 I can get a refund.

the original iphone was unsubsidized (AT&T gave you nothing to buy the phone) this made the phone more expensive ($600) but the plans were cheaper because AT&T didn't need to recoup any costs.

the iphone 3G was subsidized ($200) which means AT&T pitched in the other $400 for the phone to get more customers. However AT&T needs to recoup that money, so they charge you $20 more per month, which means over the course of 2 years, they recoup their money plus interest ($480... 24months * 20 bucks). This extra 80 bucks over two years is why AT&T allowed people who had the first gen iphone to upgrade for cheap. They now were able to lock you in for 2 years and charge you more per month and get an extra 80 bucks out of you over 2 years.

Now everyone who has an iphone 3G at the most has had the phone 11 months. AT&T has only recouped $220 from you from the $400 they pitched in for you to get the phone. Why would they then pitch in another $400 for you to get the new phone? If you want the new phone, AT&T is saying, okay, but you are bringing your own $400 this time.

that all sounds like a bad joke: did the iphone visually change? no. are there any breathtaking new functions? no. it looks as if apple is selling the same product as a new one. and to be honest: i EXPECT a product to be faster after one year on the market. to simply put an "s" in the brand name and expect that people will be feel the urge to buy it is not enough. bad, bad, bad. or just a bad joke by apple?

Especially since att considers the iphone a computing device not a traditional cell phone. At least thats the excuse they give for not alowing slingplayer to use anything but wi-fi.

We were going to develop a video streaming app but decided it wouldn't meet att guidelines and get restricted to wi-fi, so we backed off of that.

If you add a line to your account, you will get the 199/299 pricing on the phone, and sign a 2year contract. You will have to pay 26$ activation fee (one time fee!!) and 30 for the data each month.
 
By number votes how negative this post is and my general felling I guess iPhone 3Gs is not good upgrade. We will not see queues outside the stores this time. And that will be good estimate of popularity.
As much I love Apple I think they are loosing momentum with iPhone when competitors getting closer month by month. Its seems that iPhone users are ripped off by all carriers in terms of money as much as service (lack of MMS, Slingplayer not over 3G, etc).
Apple need to come up with some killer iPhone in next 12 months or they loose big part of smart phone market soon.

It's because otherwise the market would be flooded with 2nd hand iPhone 3Gs, and ATT would lose those sales. They are betting that people who don't own an iPhone 3G will buy the new model, and that a majority of those who do own the 3G now will upgrade after 12/12/09, AND that the number of people who decide to drop the iPhone in favor of another carrier will be smaller than the number of people who'll pay the $200 upgrade premium. Simple, really.

My reason for wanting a subsidized price is due to iPhone being an exclusive phone for the network and because of Apple and their product updates. Also the media and attention the iPhone gets is unlike any phone on the market. Yes, I did get a subsidized price last year, but only because I did not get one when I purchased my original iPhone. For a phone that will see updates every 11-13 months it absolutely punishes early adopters andcould take thousands or potentially millions of customers from ATT.

Instead of ATT allowing me to sign a new 2 year deal and get the 3GS cheaper my contract will now expire with them in 2010. Same is true for any iPhone 3G buyers that bought the phone when it was first released. If there is no iPhone update by July 2010 or for some reason no update comes next year, I am free to leave without penalty and AT&T loses a customer. If they let me sign I am stuck until 2011 and the chances of an updated iPhone are much higher during that 2 year period.

Bring in the possibility of Apple no longer being exclusive with ATT after 2010 and these millions of 3G owners that couldn't upgrade are free to grab a new carrier with the same phone. Also remember how many of these iPhones have been sold to customers coming from other carriers, they would be free to switch back. Throw in the common ATT complaints and ATT could potentially lose these customers all because the early adopters of the new model phones were not allowed to upgrade at a reasonable price.

Have you tested the new iPhone? Can you say it is not faster? Apple says that things are faster on the new phone with the new software. They did not give internals, so we don't know yet that there is not a processor or RAM upgrade. you shouldn't make comments with nothing to back it up. Most people would have liked to see more in this "upgrade", but for those who were considering an iPhone this is an improvement over the previous version. If you were just looking to upgrade your OLD 3G iPhone after 1 year, this may not be the best upgrade for you for the price.

Come on🙄, its nothing to do with Apple being from US. It is not nationalized company. They don't care where they will start selling their products as long as they receive enough and quick publicity to make money and its happened that US got the best market for this at the moment.

That should be fine. Just make sure you tell your ATT rep thats what you are doing.
 
Here is a question. I want to sell my 3G and buy a 3GS. I would like to sell my 3G NOW BEFORE the market is flooded. Can I take the SIM card out of my 3G and put it in a GO Prepaid Phone for a week until the 3GS is released? That would allow me to sell now, but get a 3GS day one. I just don't want to lose my number, cancel my account and etc etc etc.

Someone mentioned this Go Phone for a broken iPhone, so I want to find out if anyone has this experience???
 
Free upgraded shipping

Just called Apple about being mislead by the delivery date, (June 19 shipping and June 24 delivery) and they upgraded it to next day for free. Customer Service was soooooo helpful.
