And people said that for the first iPhone and the 3G. Now this one. I see a pattern here.

I've pre-ordered my 32GB.

Thats a fair point but honestly i cant see what apple have been doing since September... iPhone, Snow Leopard what else...? im sure i haven't missed anything... yeah credit crunch and all that but why are apple going on the go slow... unless we see something huge later this year but honestly i cant see that happening🙂

Indeed.. you'd be stupid to, as you'd be only 6 months into an 18 month contract when the next phone came out and be in exactly the same situation, only worse.

Best thing seems to be to sit this one out and see what apple (or others) come up with next year.

madness...20 million lost sales until June 2010 I'd say...maybe these things are still flying out the shops faster than they can build them - that can be the only reason for this...

Honestly, if your getting it from the website, its probably wrong. The computer cant analyze your plan and tell you that you SHOULD be, just what it can see. It could just be a bug, but if you went to an att store, they will most likely give you the proper pricing.

Why would you assume that it is a bug? It could be, but there's is nothing indicating that it is. There may be (I'm speculating here also) something in various 3G owners' AT&T accounts that provide for varying results even though these owners all bought on first day etc.

What if you have an iphone on your family plan, obviously you can't upgrade, but someone else on the plan can upgrade, can you upgrade THAT phone and use it in place of your 3G without having to buy 2 media plans. That's my fear, i want to upgrade my other phone but in doing so would i have to make it so it has the media plan and my iphone 3g has it as well, or will it just override it because im just using my old phone s an upgrade tool? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Also, is video recording part of OS 3.0 or iPhone 3GS?

Yes, if your on a family plan and one phone can upgrade, but you cant, (if its okay with that family member!!) we can use their upgrade to get you the discounted price!!

Tons of people are going to upgrade anyways. My upgrade date isn't until May 23 2010 and I'm still upgrading. I'll likely do it again next year too. I bought my 3G in December.

Not all Cingular/AT&T customers may qualify for a cell phone upgrade. At this time, AT&T Mobility allows these customers to upgrade with no upgrade fee when they commit to a new 2-year contract:

* AT&T customers who have had 24 months of cell phone service since activation of their cell phone or since their last phone upgrade.

Certain AT&T customers may be eligible for a cell phone upgrade even if they have been in their current plan for less than two years (24 months), if they commit to a new 2-year contract and meet these eligibility requirements:

* Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing at least $68.99 a month but no more than $98.99 a month, and who has been in contract (and not had a phone upgrade) for 21 months or more,
or
* Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing $99 a month or more, and who has been in contract (and not upgraded) in the last 12 months.

A customer with a calling plan and data services of less than $69 who is 21 to 23 months into contract may upgrade for a fee and a commitment of an additional two-year service contract extension. No upgrade fee is assessed for any customers who are on a month-to-month agreement.

Note that AT&T upgrade eligibility may be further limited based on customer’s usage history, payment record, previous phone replacement, etc. Upgrade eligibility is solely determined by AT&T Mobility at its discretion.

Slow? We had MacBook Pro updates today. iPhone update today. Snow Leopard update today. iPhone OS 3.0 update today. Safari update today. And rest assured that a Mac Tablet or Netbook-type is in the works as well. Rarely does Apple update / release this much at any one event. It may not have been what everyone hoped for on the iPhone, but this was almost unusually large for an Apple update day.

Thats true, I cant really guarantee it, but I can tell you that the website will only show you either 2 year pricing (199 or 299) or show you the full retail, it doesnt usually show the 1 year pricing.

However, the websites "inaccuracies" are kind of a running joke in the stores, so please, if you do meet the requirements I mentioned, but are getting different prices, go into a store and find out!

Bs

Complete BS!! i have been a at&t customer for 8 Years + and always had problems with them. I was right about to switch when the 1st gen iphone came out. I tried it, waited in like 1st gen and 2nd gen and know they want us existing at&t IPHONE customers to pay more.. AT&T is out of there mind!! i will be outside with a sign at&t Sucks And Apple Rocks Hoping a news reporter comes up and talks to me!! people worry and are pissed about mms and tethering not available how about ***** customer service DROPED CALLS and complete ass holes that work in there retail stores!! Apple needs to switch to a different carrier!! the iphone is the best phone in my eyes, but has horrible cellphone service the phone is so good it equals out the bs... thats just my opinion!

iPhone Pre-order Crashing

Is anyone else having problems with pre-ordering a 3GS? I keep going through the song and dance, then at the very end it crashes while processing my application and says error try again later. Anyone else? Very annoying.

I would say the MBP updates are much more interesting than iPhone.

Where did you derive that? Where did you see that you have to have 3GS for voice control? I interpreted it as a iPhone OS 3.0 feature (which will work fine on existing phones.)

Another difference in the hardware of the 3GS is that it supports the update headset with volume control. Perhaps this has something to do with it if you do have to have a 3GS.

When you go to the Apple Store to purchase, they show a list of features comparing the 8GB 3G and the 16GB (or 32GB) 3Gs. Voice command is a feature of 3Gs but not 3G. Same is true for compass, nike+, video, etc.

By one-year pricing, do you mean $399/$499? Because that is what I'm offered on Apple's site. It tells me to wait until 7/19 when I "may qualify" for a standard upgrade (I'm assuming that is $199/$299??).

Perhaps, but I believe this is a stop-gap iPhone to help fight the Palm Pre until some additional features can be incorporated. Can I be wrong. Absolutely. Perhaps no new features will be available until WWDC 2010. However, any upgrade is an improvement over the last upgrade if the additional options and features are available for the same price as the previous version (which is the case here). Anyone who was considering an i{hone 3G will be happier with an iPhone 3Gs instead for the same price.

Fully subsidized price. I think AT&T has a very opaque upgrade policy. I have many phones on my family plan (2 iPhones, BB, 2 other cheapies), so could they be giving me a break? (Ha!)

Yeah that seems to be impacting my outcome as well. Maybe one of your lines in your family plan corresponds to the upgrade date or something about having many lines or a certain plan or no discounts or discounts is affecting it...

From what I can tell I can get the full discount after 18 months, which is consistent with what a few people have reported here.

I actually don't feel too bad about $499 for the phone, I was willing to shell out more for the original... what I do feel bad about is accidentally overpaying and the inevitable hell I'll deal with trying to get my money back.

So far though it's looking like I'm good to pay $499 or wait til next year's model.

- well that appears to be me there. I was a new customer when the 3g came out, haven't upgraded, pay my bill on time, and have their unlimited everything plan, which runs me about $200/mo. if the standards mentioned above are accurate on 22jul2009 I will be able to purchase a 3gs 32GB for $299.

Further confirmation of what Mr. Maui replied to me earlier. Nice!
