Nice!! :D

From the specs: "Support for 1024x768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter"

Really? Does it have an "iPad Mode" too, for when it is in this configuration?

Important features I feel the iPhone is still missing:

- Inobtrusive notifications ala Android

I have an Android phone. This device decides to blink the LED on the front when it has a notification (which come in a variety of audio and vibration styles at least, so you can identify the app that did it sometimes). I have to put the phone face down at night.

- Flash support

It has a flash on the back for the camera. However, Adobe Flash is unimportant, I could do without the myriad dozens of flash ads on every website.

- Micro SD support for hot swappable storage

Would be nice to have, but you'd need to find the space for it in the device.

- Removable battery (this would make the battery easier to replace when it begins to age/wear down, and would also allow heavy users to carry a spare)

Have people actually had battery life problems with existing iPhones? I thought Apple used 1000 cycle batteries so that they would last to the end of a typical 2 year contract and longer without a problem.

Features I would like to see:
- Larger screen

I could see a 5" device to compete with the Dell Streak, but I just don't think the argument is that strong overall. Bigger phones just get unwieldy. Far better to have a limited range of options, it makes the decision easier for people - and that's surely one reason that Apple sell a lot.

Lol - its not about space, its about being able to sell you different capacity models

Replaceable battery means you can carry a few and have extended time away from mains...

That'll be the ipad mini next year...

Ok so im a noob... will someone help me?

1. Im using the old iPhone 3G 8GB. If i want to upgrade to the new one, 16GB, how much will it cost and when can I do it? My contract expries this coming Sept.

2. What will the no-contract price be for the new 16GB? Can I do it the day it comes out? Can I buy/do that online?

thanksss
1. You answered your own question: September. Fees include activation and whatever else AT&T likes to throw in.
2. The no contract price still means you're locked to AT&T. It's something like $499/599. Anyway, why not wait until you're eligible for the discounted rate? Check the webpage or call AT&T for eligibility information.

Video calling is overrated. It's been around for 6+ years here in the UK and regardless of network quality, people just don't use it as much as the marketing types thought they would.
Well, the whiners kept crying about it, so we have it now.

LOL you must live in some real rural area, I can't go 5 feet in all of Souther California or NYC without maybe 10 wifi hot spots, lol
I live in Dallas and there's hardly a free wi-fi spot around.

MicroSIM - HUGE LETDOWN, REALLY HUGE
Are you really surprised? After I saw it used in the iPad, I figured they were bringing it to the iPhone too.

Either that, or next year's iPhone will be more of an " S⃣ " type upgrade with 64GB of storage and a few other tweaks but the same casing. Meaning that we only get a truly new version of the iPhone on a bi-yearly basis.
I'd prefer a real upgrade only every two years. This way, I don't have to listen to the whiners. They keep crying about how they're entitled to a brand new iPhone every year.

lol @ ignorance. Musta been one of those unhappy Sprint customers from 5+ years ago, huh? Network AND customer service (that idiots still point to as being a negative) are outstanding! Not to mention saving a butt load of cash on top of that.
Sprint sucks in Dallas right now. My friend switched to Sprint from Verizon, because she hates Verizon's guts. She's been unhappy about missed calls, texts, voicemails that come days later, etc.

Why is it that everyone thinks CDMA is so terrible?
I know that I'll never go CDMA as long as I want to travel overseas. You can't drop a SIM into a CDMA phone--unless it's one where GSM capabilities are added (and that doesn't count).

Am I the only noting that this is still a 3G phone? I thought it was going to be 4G... all the screenshots show either WiFi or 3G symbol. Methinks this is why AT&T is being so "generous" w/ their 6 month early upgrade ability - because they want to lock you into 3G for another 2 years.
 AT&T is a ways away from rolling out 4G service.

Can someone provide me with info on how to purchase the Iphone 4 WITHOUT going on a contract with AT&T?

How do you buy it outright and how much is it?
Just make plans to go on vacation where unlocked iPhones are sold. There's some lovely countries including: Hong Kong, Italy, Australia, etc. Of course, you'll also have to pay full price for the phone. That depends on the currency valuation. I heard the euro isn't doing so well, so you might make like Bernie Madoff. Don't forget to send us postcards from wherever you decide to go. :p

I was really hoping for 64GB. So now I'm going to wait and see if the hackers can unlock it. If they can, I'll get the 32GB in black. And I'm definitely ordering online. It's already hitting 100 in Dallas. I refuse to bake.

No word on UK yet, still don't get how $200 = £450 for the 3GS :/

Lets look at 2 year contracts.

AT&T - 3GS 16gb - "$149.00"

AT&T Wireless Account - 2-year contract required.
Activation Fee $36.00 + 450 minutes$39.99/mo + 2GB$25.00/mo + 200 messages$5.00/mo

Plan Total:$69.99/mo

149 + 36 + (24 x 69.99)

= $1864.76

============================

As a contrast in the uk:

O2: 3GS 16gb “£89.00”

02 – 2 year contract, £35/mo, 600 mins, Unlimited texts, Unlimited web (500mb)

£89 + (24x£35)

= £929

On most phones you can turn this feature off. You can on my Desire at least.

It has a flash on the back for the camera. However, Adobe Flash is unimportant, I could do without the myriad dozens of flash ads on every website.

I was referring to Adobe Flash. Flash ads are not what I would like Flash for, more for the hundreds of websites that still use Flash to deliver their media content.

For example; Zynga may have bought Farmville to the iPhone, but there's still Cafe World and many other Facebook flash games that are not accessible on the iPhone.

Would be nice to have, but you'd need to find the space for it in the device.

Micro SD cards are smaller than the average adult fingernail and the readers aren't much bigger! It wouldn't require much space.

I believe the lack of Micro SD support is more a marketing tactic so that they can sell different size phones. Why buy a 32GB iPhone for an extra £100 if you can get a 16GB iPhone plus a 32GB Micro SD card for the same price? ;)

Have people actually had battery life problems with existing iPhones? I thought Apple used 1000 cycle batteries so that they would last to the end of a typical 2 year contract and longer without a problem.

Well yeah - some people keep their phones until they stop working. Batteries lose life over time, so eventually the capacity of your battery will not be the same as it was when you bought it. After a 2 year contract it's unlikely the battery will still be running at full capacity.

Many of the few websites that use flash properly are developing apps - its big market with lots of disposable income.

The rest can be done in HTML5 i believe

For example; Zynga may have bought Farmville to the iPhone, but there's still Cafe World and many other Facebook flash games that are not accessible on the iPhone.

Ah facebook - now getting with the programme.
videos now stream in safari (if not on their app)

And Farmville was the No1 example of "things you will miss if you buy an iPhone"

Now there is an app for that - that will raise real money for development of more apps.

Flash seems to be being bypassed in new ways every month.

Seriously, what a bunch of bloody whingers! 'We already knew this… Other phones already have that… I can't live without this, wah, wah, wah.' Get a grip people! You're like a spoiled teenager complaining because the new Porche daddy bought her doesn't have a big enough spoiler.

I love my iPhone 3G, but I don't spend my life sh*tting on Android users for their preferred choice of phone. I'm in awe at what today's smart phones can do — a heck of a lot more than I actually need! We are truly spoiled — even more so with the release of this phone.

Sorry, I'm just lost for words at how emotional some people get over whose gadget is the most fandangled. It's very childish.

Without even seeing the spec for facetime, i can tell you it blows the crap out of the ITU-T specification for H.263, which manages QCIF or CIF over a 3G network. Once they work out a 3G arrangement with the networks whereby they get a bit of cash, you'll see it's use explode.

I agree though it's a pity they still can't support the H.263 standard for use with phones that do not support Facetime yet. Surely they could have done both.

Yep, once you pre-order, the phone will be shipped to your house. Most likely it will get to your local shipping hub early, but Apple orders a strict hold on deliveries until the release date. Once you open it up, you simply activate the phone over iTunes.

I'm probably going to get yelled at about this, but, I don't really see the point of waiting in line at an Apple store. It is just so you can be one of the first to get your hands on one? I can gladly wait a couple of extra hours for my UPS guy so I don't have to wait out in the cold for 12 hours...

So how will they handle the Micro-Sims for people who get it shipped to their door? Are people really going to take scissors to their simcard?

while the iPhone4 has some cool features. I love how apple choose to back away from its promise to follow the standard charging ports on a phone (microUSB)

As for the microSim card things I think they did that to discourage jail breaking as no point to unlock if you can not use it on another network any how. It is not like microSim really offered anything new and useful. Size wise nothing since the internal hardware is still the same and that was what really was limiting things size wise.

No going wiht the MicroUSB can not use the size argument because the 30 pin connector is larger in every way.

Oh and before people go with the adaptor agrument for 30 pin to MicroUSB that a BS argument and against the sprite of the agreement that apple is pretty much violating.

It was designed to reduce electronic waste not increase it. I should be able to buy 1 charger and work with every phone. The charger that comes with the phone should work with any phone.

I think the AT&T "generous offer" is actually more about trying to lock people in before they lose exclusivity. Based on the offer, I'm guessing we'll see non-AT&T iPhones by the end of the year, or for the January announcement.

+1

Cameras..... Well, some of us can't have cameras at work, but they are cool nevertheless. I think that the 5MP with the bigger sensor will be much better than the 8MPs on a few of the Android phones, but I'm waiting on a nice side by side comparison from somebody like dpreviews.com or similar.

Jobs pulled a bit of a fast one there saying it wasn't all about megapixels.

He's right. It's not.

But the pixel size and subsequently the sensor in the new iPhone 4 is still smaller than most other phones that have pretensions of being a decent camera.

I'm sure it's a fine upgrade over the old iPhone but it's not exactly cutting edge, even for phones.

I think the iPhone 4 will perform admirably. The camera performance alone looks like it'll be stunning. With 5 megapixels and IBS CMOS it should perform better than most mobile phones.

Although the WWDC only showed us a lot of what we knew, I still think Apple pushed the boundaries.

I made a little video about it here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mLb2vj_JsU
