Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but the tech specs page only mentions assisted GPS. Does the iPhone 4 not have a dedicated GPS chip?

Assisted GPS is normal GPS with the cell towers speeding up the lock process. It's better (faster) than standard GPS. It's been like this since the 3g. It's not a bad thing!

With ads taking up a portion of the screen, it's going to make what can be worked with on screen more difficult to use.

i'm not sure everyone understands what iAds are all about. you realize it'll be just like now, right? it's not like the OS is going to have ads on it now.

iAds is just one more way for devs to add apps to their apps, just like they do now. we're not going to see ads on every app. there are already ways to do this, and there are many apps with ads in them. this is not going to change (soon).

Retina Display .... gimme a break... marketing speak.... Xperia X1's WVGA (800 x 480) has a 311 dpi display

right. which is... less.

and since the iphone has, what... 217,600 more pixels... i'd say that's a pretty serious difference. like a REAL serious difference in real estate. like a over-50%-more type difference.

does that sound like a lot to you? or is that marketing?

but hey, that phone also has ... many pixels. a lot even.

Just to confirm if anyone can for me, if you preorder on the 15th the phones will simply by shipped to your door correct? And you'll activate yourself via iTunes olde tyme style?

It's been so long since I did it this way, starting a new 2 year contract shouldn't be a problem either will it? I'll be getting 2, one for me and one for my parent.

Can someone provide me with info on how to purchase the Iphone 4 WITHOUT going on a contract with AT&T?

How do you buy it outright and how much is it?

You can only buy an unlocked iPhone from countries which have laws about providing unlocked versions of phones.

So you need to find an importer with connections or know somebody in New Zealand, Italy etc.

The 32GB 3GS was about $1.3K NZD, if that gives you an estimate.

I wish they forgot this "thinnest smartphone ever" thing and just put a decent battery in that thing.

I agree about the strange obsession with ultimate thinness. I don't want a brick in my pocket, but I wouldn't mind an extra millimeter or two for more battery juice. That said, I bet test results will show the new iPhone to have more "decent battery" than its competition. Particularly the universally-panned battery life of the EVO. Though its owners will tell you all you need to do to get decent battery life from the beast is turn off wifi, Bluetooth, backlighting, background processes, ringer, vibration...

Well, what don't we know? We don't know the processor speed. Did Apple underclock the iPad A4, like they underclocked the processor on the 3GS? We don't know how strong the front facing camera is - .5 or 2 mp? We don't know how much RAM - 256k or 512k? We don't know what kind of flash is included - just basic LED or the Philips Luxeon LED? And, of course, we heard nothing about the propects of MobileMe being available for free in the future. Kind of a typical half information presentation.

Have to agree, even without the Gizmodo-exposé this keynote would have been disappointing.

Yes, the new phone looks great, but half of the 8 key features Steve touted he had already extensively demoed at a keynote only a few months back for iOS 4. And video chat has been around almost a decade now and nobody really uses it in the end, plus this is wifi only..

But yes, the phone is great, but that's literally all we got in a 2 hour keynote despite all the potential in the MobileMe, mac os x and appleTV rumours.

It just seemed to me like a WWDC keynote shouldn't be dedicated entirely to an iPhone revision, especially if you're going to pad it out with a recap of your last keynote. This was Apples chance to do a lot more with it's other products but now they continue to languish.

Yep, once you pre-order, the phone will be shipped to your house. Most likely it will get to your local shipping hub early, but Apple orders a strict hold on deliveries until the release date. Once you open it up, you simply activate the phone over iTunes.

I'm probably going to get yelled at about this, but, I don't really see the point of waiting in line at an Apple store. It is just so you can be one of the first to get your hands on one? I can gladly wait a couple of extra hours for my UPS guy so I don't have to wait out in the cold for 12 hours...

So reserving through AT&T means paying for the phone and picking it up through AT&T and pre-ordering through Apple means doing the same and getting it through an Apple store or having it shipped directly to you?

Has it been confirmed we don't need to buy these things in stores like we had to at first with the 3G?

definitively impressed with this new iphone and i guessed the name right iPhone 4!
Can't wait to pick up this phone, my 3G is starting to look older and older everyday!

Android people why must you feel like you have to troll apple forums about how much better you think android is to iphone? It seems like something 14 year olds do because they some how feel cool about themselves :p just sayin.

Both iPhone and Android have there strengths and weaknesses, remember competition drives innovation!

This is definitely a step in the right direction but it seems like Apple is playing catch up with Android now. The iPhone 4 boasts a similar feature set to the EVO, but HTC will have another three or four phones out by the time Apple releases their next one... plus sense UI takes some beating on the software side of things

One thing I really like about the new iPhone is the way it looks, very sexy :D Other than that.. not overly impressed. A gyroscope seems like a bit of a gimmicky feature to me, turning the phone on that angle is going to be turning the screen away from you, so it's not going to be an incredibly useful feature!

And finally.. I'll believe the "Retina Display" is better than OLED when I see it, but I have my reservations ;)

Amazing update, but that lack of a 64 gig option puts back my dream of ditching my ipod classic to 2013 when they finally release a 256gig. I'd have thought they were rushing to supersede them. Maybe they still sell well. I guess I'll just have to stick with the twin setup for a year longer than i'd hoped, which is annoying cos I want my left pocket back.

So you're "not overly impressed." Cool. I think the phone looks great both in terms of appearance and features. What else do you expect the phone to do? What would make you happy? Maybe if it could fly?

Important features I feel the iPhone is still missing:

- Inobtrusive notifications ala Android
- Flash support
- Micro SD support for hot swappable storage
- Removable battery (this would make the battery easier to replace when it begins to age/wear down, and would also allow heavy users to carry a spare)

Features I would like to see:

- Larger screen

That said, I do still think this is the best update since the iPhone v1. The camera looks impressive but I'll have to wait and see what it's like when the phone is released.

And video calling has been added at long last!! But video calling over 3G has been around since at least 2004 (maybe even earlier), so again... Apple is reselling old features and trying to make them seem innovative.. but I see through the marketing ;)

Big step in the right direction but still behind the times it seems.

Stop making the iPhone shrink--add memory instead, Apple!

1) NAND density has not increased to allow more storage in the same amount of space as is currently used.

2) Name the other smartphones with even half of the iPhone's built in storage in NAND (not SDHC, big difference).

Apparently, you can get a BlackBerry Storm with 128 GB of memory.

I have to say that I'm a little tired of Apple trying to wow me with miniaturization. I'd rather have greater capacity than some micro-gadget to show-up my friends for a month or two--until they get the over-hyped portable device to satisfy their own envy.

Im all for miniaturisation, especially at the current specs.

32GB is a nice soft spot for a lot of people I know.

Do we know the price of the iPhone without contract?

I'm guessing here, but they'll most likely sell it with contract only in US, they are getting roughly USD 200 over the 2-year life of the contract. I do want this phone really badly, but as usual I'm guessing there will be a 30% premium in Europe, which will make it as expensive as a decent laptop. Damn, I live on the wrong continent, apparently.

guys the phone has 256 mb ram based on 2 128mb chips..

It's a PoP processor (a4) and yeah it's all good means its got room to play around with in the future :)

Sell it with contract only in U.S? Apart from the original iPhone all other generations were available with contract at least in my country..
