Now all you have to do is get your kids to ration their use of their new iPhones during the first month to build up your buffer. ;) Good luck, keeping the kids off the new iPhone during the first month. Maybe ATT will let current subscribers keep their current buildup of rollover minutes. That would be awesome!

Actually since they're letting us existing customers keep their voice plans, this will supposedly allow us to keep our rollover minutes!

I wonder how easy it'll be to transfer your number to AT&T and if that is done also through iTunes or you have to do that at AT&T and wait in line.

The plans are reasonable, I just wish the text messages increased with each plan though, even if it was just 50 or 100 more per plan increase.

Hmm i am wondering the same thing...i want to port my number from verizon, wonder how all of this is going to work??

i have a question.

i am on family plan with my parents for verizon. so if i want use the same number for the new iphone, i have to cancel my line with my parents family plan? which that will cost a cancellation fee right?

These plans are revolting! I don't want any data/voicemail AT ALL bollocks to that much money!

I pay $40 for a free k800i with 500sms a month and 100minutes either to landline/mobile.... that deals ****! apple just screwing for more, im really disappointed considering ive used apple since 1995.lame.

I don't think this is the device for you anyway. It's like cutting off a leg to not browse the web or send/receive emails on an iPhone.

Anyway, Apple isn't really screwing you because they aren't forcing you to buy it if you don't want to.

If you are mainly interested in the iPod functions, I'll bet you anything that a large-screen iPod with touch screen, etc. is coming soon--i.e. iPhone - connectivity + larger capacity, no service plans

Much cheaper then I thought. A lot of people (including myself) might actually save money with a iPlan rather than a regular Cingular/ATT Smartphone plan. I for one was worried about the rates, but wow, this is rather a relief.

Is no body noticing my post about the 80GB iPhone, and the fact that the iPod only works with Activation with AT&T?

I thought that would be a big deal.

What did you expect?

Who would buy an iphone and then not activate it for the phone features. Just buy an ipod!

I think from the day it was launched it was pretty much a given that you wouldnt be able to use it without an AT&T contract.

Now its going to be very hard to resist this phone. Unlimited everything except SMS for 20 bucks more a month? And free mobile to mobile? So once everyone gets an iPhone we will all have unlimited minutes!

This is really great news.

I got a SMS message the other day. Didn't even know my phone could receive them. 200 per month will be plenty for me! And most of my family and friends already have ATT, so I'm set for $59.95, I may even have more minutes on my existing plan, I'll have to check.

So, any whiners still out there to complain?

Apple has THE BEST PHONE in the industry, with THE BEST price plans for its device...simply AWESOME. I wasn't expecting those long lines, but now I am sure every iPhone is gonna be sold out in minutes on the first day.

Apple hits another home run, and it's gonna dominate the cellphone industry in no time...now please bring it to Europe...I am gonna subscribe in no time...GO APPLE!

Oh yeah. Have a look at EDGE today...

growing up with a 1200 baud modem was excruciating. i'm happy with 56k speeds, and EDGE is usually at least twice that. i'm not saying it's speedy, but to say that it is unusable or completely overpriced is a bit of a stretch.

Look guys. Don't believe the "EDGE IS SOOOO SLOOOWWWW" ******** folks keep spewing.

Here are this morning's EDGE tests (I do them several times a day...because I must....for reasons i won't get into right now)

New York Last Result:
Download Speed: 194 kbps (24.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 79 kbps (9.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

DC Last Result:
Download Speed: 135 kbps (16.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 70 kbps (8.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Sidebar: This i found interesting this morning...DC is the closest to my location. Its usually faster.

Atlanta Last Result:
Download Speed: 146 kbps (18.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 72 kbps (9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Chicago Last Result:
Download Speed: 202 kbps (25.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 27 kbps (3.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Dallas Last Result:
Download Speed: 191 kbps (23.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 70 kbps (8.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Los Angeles Last Result:

San Francisco Last Result:

Seattle Last Result:

Upload Speed: 72 kbps (9 KB/sec transfer rate)

These are raw uncached xfer numbers; web surfing "feels" more peppy due to the way ATTs servers burst load and cache.

I suspect (I haven't talked to my guy at ATT in engineering since last week) that apple and att have some further stuff going on to boost the experience as well.

All of this is to say...relax people. you won't be dripping along at dialup speed over EDGE on your phone. Anyone that tells you otherwise is full of **** :)

Does that mean that you can't use the iPhone as a stand alone iPod at all?

Doesnt look like it ma

Also the activation eliminates the possibility of me importing this thing to the UK. Im going to have to wait for the official European launch.

take the damn iPhone out of the equation for a minute. You're getting ripped off by AT&T, who cares what phone you have. It's not right, and it's extortion.

Then again, you all are so willing to hand over more money than you should for the service you're getting, maybe it's not extortion, but consumer stupidity

All I can say is my bill will go down when I get mine, versus my TMo Blackberry plan, and I can pitch my pearl (anyone wanna buy an unlocked pearl cheap?). Perhaps I didn't obsessively look around to squeeze every penny out of TMo, but frankly I have better things to do. They had a phone I wanted, and had a plan at a price I was willing to pay. It's that simple...

Plus, I'll have an iPhone. I'm sorry, but you can't separate the two.

I just watched the new Activate your iPhone video and noticed in the section for syncing your data the section shows the same size as a 80 gig iPod...am I wrong or wasn't 8gig the top size for this beauty?

apple announced 8gb.

maybe they lied and will say it's actually 40GB/80GB as a big surprise. boom!

And that is exactly why it is so, to stop the foreign market until they get their own.

The version of iTunes used in the demo was a bit iffy - there was a blue gradient instead of the black one in the sidebar. So something is odd. Perhaps it is an internal build? Or an older internal build for iPhone?

And the 80GB tidbit is interesting, but they were probably using a stand-in iPod or something... maybe...

I pay $50 right now for my T-Mobile 450 min a week, 5 free numbers, Unlimited Data and 500 texts. I also use a K800i I bought unlocked, which doesnt support EDGE so the data is silly. However, having talked to some folks higher up at my provider, and with this push for high speed data (oh thank you iPhone for stirring competition), all of T-Mobile's new towers have UMTS waiting to be turned on. As soon as the FCC gives approval in a month or so, I am going to be very happy with my phone and its wireless modem, no more crappy broadband internet.

And Yes, the 80GB iPod was noticed and will not be talked about.

T-Mobile. 1,500minutes, unlimited data, 400 SMS: $65.00
FWIW, the T-Mobile minute plan you seemed to have quoted ($39.99 for 1500 minutes) includes NO FREE NIGHTS and NO FREE WEEKENDS.

Add $20 for free nights and weekends on that plan, bringing T-Mobiles cost to $85.00/month.

I think from the day it was launched it was pretty much a given that you wouldnt be able to use it without an AT&T contract.

I didn't know what to expect, I didn't speculate, I just waited to see. And I don't think it was a "given," but certainly a viable possibility.

Wow! I'm currently with Cingular/AT&T with a year left on my current contract. I currently pay $69.99 for 2 phones, 700 minutes, no data plan. Considering how much I'll be using the internet on my iPhone I'll go with either the $79.99/900 or the $99.99/1,350 plan - assuming that my wife's Razr will still be an additional $9.99/mo.

By the way, to those complaining about the $499/$599 iPhone price points here's the high end phone prices AT&T is currently selling on their site:

AT&T 8525: $599.99 (499.99 after rebate)
Palm® Treo 750: $549.99 (349.99 after rebate)
BlackBerry® 8800: $499.99 (449.99 after rebate)
Palm® Treo(TM) 650 (Refurb): $399.99
BlackBerry Curve: $399.99 (349.99 after rebate)
BlackBerry Pearl: $399.99 (349.99 after rebate)
Nokia N75: $399.99 (349.99 after rebate)
Motorola KRZR: $399.99 (349.99 after rebate)

yes, but if you don't use your minutes every month, chances are, you've never going to touch your rollover minutes ever. It's a gimmick

Actually, you don't really know too much about what you are talking about.

My wife and I have two mobile phones on a family plan. Each has its own phone number. I use mine for business. The cost of our plan is $70/month (or just $35 per phone) We have 700 rollover minutes, unlimited nights (beginning at 9pm) and weekends. For only $10 more per phone we extended the unlimited nights to begin at 7pm. So, for two mobile accounts, we pay just $45/month/phone for 700 rollover minutes (which continue to rollover for 12 months) We can make unlimited calls beginning at 7pm during the week and at anytime during the weekends. If we aren't using 700 minutes a month we can down grade our plan at any time and save even more money which is something we are considering since, a lot of our communications are done after 7pm.

The point of this:

When comparing costs, what are the actual details of the plan you are comparing? Do you have the flexibility to modify the plan to better suit your needs (AT&T does)? Do you need roll over minutes or not and if so how long do they accrue for? What is the quality of the service and support you are getting? In my case, how easy is it to sync data to my phone? (In the case of the iPhone, extremely easy-in the case of just about every other "free" or "cheap" phone I've had in the past, not so much. Either it wouldn't sync, or it would partially sync, or it required the purchase of additional software to sync) What about add-on products (cases, headsets, etc, etc.)? Store locations?

Maybe, just maybe a Cricket is all you need.

For me, it's the iPhone. http://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

If you've never ported your number from another carrier, it works like this-

During the activation process of your new phone, you need to provide very exact information about your old cellular account. Your full name, address, account number, etc. THIS ALL MUST BE TYPED EXACTLY AS IT IS ON YOUR OLD BILL.

Seriously, the system is completely automated and if you make a typo, leave out a middle initial (or put one in if your old cell bill doesn't list one) it can cause the process to get caught up and you'll have to spend a ton of time dealing with some idiot in a call center to get it straightened out.

If your old cell phone isn't under contract, you enter in your old information, the number port processes, and within a few hours your old number works on your new phone and your old cellular provider cancels your service instantly.
