You friggin sheep...I can't believe this. It's just a tiny ipod photo. No big revolution. Bah...

i think you overklook the fact that this is a flash mem product, that's a big deal for many of us. it's a slightly larger shuffle with a color screen, that's a remarkable asset; or it's an iPod in 2/10 the volume with flash memory; those are remarkable assets. No, it won't be the ideal solution for everyone. But i think it's a big advance.

If someone has $200 billion in cash laying around, they could buy the iPod line and let Apple get back to making computers.

Well, let me check... (opens wallet)... nope, sorry.

WOW.

It's as if someone took jessica alba, shrunk her down in plastic and made her sing...

it's sheer sex in white (or black) plastic!

I have a 40gb with a about 12gb of songs, so it's too small for me, but it's infinately more sexy than the bulky 60gb photo!

They should have called it the iPod SD (Super Deformed). The pictures distort the true proportions quite a bit, it's much longer and bigger than you think.

I was fully ready to pay the rumored $300 for an 8G model, especially if it had a lovely aluminum mini-style case. But with only 4G's, no new features, and a ugly case, I think I'll pass.

apple freaks

this will really appeal to the insatiable thirst for all things apple. I'm an apple freak but my newest Mac is a pismo (usb1 and firewire only) so I wish the nano supported firewire. I've never owned an ipod, just waiting to buy one as they get cheaper and cheaper and better and better. Still using a sony walkman (cassette) and mini disc player. Walkmans are great. You can play all the old tapes you bought as a teenager, and you can buy tapes of classic albums in charity (thrift?) shops for 50 pence. MAgiC.

There Apple goes, sterilizing a fun, colorful design. It seems like Apple doesn't understand that people like color in their lives. They did it with the iMac, then with Aqua, then they came out with the swiss cheese G5, and now they killed the mini for the nano. They seem to want to make everything black, white or brushed metal.

As for the USB 2 thing, that is just Apple kissing up to the PC market. PC Users have USB 2 more often than Firewire and more people own PCs, so I guess even Apple is into Mac marginalization now. Up until a year or two ago most Macs didn't even have a USB 2 port. The USB 2 thing is one of my least favorite aspects of the shuffle since it takes 4 hours to update since I have no USB 2 port on my GRAPE iMac.
I have to agree with you on both points. Seems the move to Intel is starting to show. :(

more of a rant before i have to leave to bar:
- look, it has everything on the bottom! headphone socket & usb connector! WTF? that makes practical wearing of nano only possibel with a frigging lanyard!
- okay, that slim click wheel looks really retarded.
- space between display & click wheel is like grand canyon
- it doesn't come in colours
- size is reduced, well so is storage space!

I vote negative!

The screen lock feature prevents unauthorized users from accessing your iPod.

Then why call it a "screen lock", why not just "lock" or "iPod lock" or "system lock" or "controls lock"...?!

In any case, it makes for a 5th game for those not owning the iPod nano. :D

You can buy the dock which has firewire or get the firewaire cable...check the Apple Store for iPod Accessories...

Just read your post, kind of defuncts my last one. Good to know firewire will work. But they should put a cable in the box. With Apple's buying power it wouldn't cost much more.

Good God! I cant belivie they did this!! I vote negative all the way. I think they should dropped the ipod and replace it with the Ipod Nano instead of dropping the mini! And then with the mini they should of made a Ipod photo mini!!! Jesus, I hope they dont do anything stupid like this with the powerbook!!!

Looks weird, but still an iPod

I know a lot of you don't like the look of the iPod nano, and I understand.

However, if you look at it from a "merge iPod shuffle with iPod" angle, it just makes sense.

The only way to keep the small width was to make it taller. The iPod look (shuffle aside) has always been "rectangle, screen at the top, controls in the middle". From the 1st 5GB iPod to the iPod nano, it's a visual constant.

Even people who haven't heard of the nano will say "is that a new iPod?" when they see one.

Tired of the Mork and Mindy references!

I always hated the TV show "Mork and Mindy' For some reason Robin Williams just makes me want to hurl. Now I am going to be reminded of that horrible show everytime I see an ad for the Nano. God what a STUPID name. Who is the one at Apple that thought Nano was a good name? Hello anybody home?? Hello?? Hello?????
I am so tired of people bringing up Mork and Mindy. They are not even pronounced the same. The defination of nano is dwarf or one billionth.Like a nanosecond. Pronounced nano. Mork and Mindy: Nanu-Nanu! Pronounced nanoo. God, am I the only one who knows what nano means?

i personally think they should have dropped anything and just update the mini with bigger drives or something. I mean they could easily put two microdrives in it to make it larger.

Just as something to think about for all the "OMG THE HEADPHONE JACK IS ON THE BOTTOM" people...

Ok, aside from the lanyard aspect, think about actually using and hold an iPod. for me, I put it in my pocket, both when I'm using it and when I'm not. You have to put the headphones facing up to both avoid damaging the connector and so that it 'flows' out of the pocket to the head right.

With the headphones on top, you have to pull out the iPod then turn it around, so the headphone jack is facing away from you, in order to use it. Then you have to flip it over again to put it back.

With the headphone jack on the bottom you can reach into your pocket, pull out the iPod, do whatever you want with it, and then put it back, probably with one hand, and certainly without having to adjust it's position.

I really think it makes more sense this (head phone down) way.

PS Anyone else reminded of Dr. Suess and the Butter Battle Book, where there was a war between two nations because of which side of their toast they buttered?

Yeah, if anything, I was ready for an iPod mini with 8GB and a color screen.

But I guess it's bye-bye to the iPod mini. You'll be missed.
