Apple announces iPod nano

I think they should dropped the ipod and replace it with the Ipod Nano instead of dropping the mini!

That would be a bad idea. For one thing the iPod's come with 20GB and 60GB of storage. The iPod Nano come with 2GB and 4GB of storage. You can't replace a high-end 60GB model with a 4GB model.

And then with the mini they should of made a Ipod photo mini!!!

But the iPod mini only went up to 6GB. No where near the iPod's storage.

No, only the real iPod is a collector's item and it's 5GB.

the ipod minis were 18hrs

The obviously had to lose battery volume for this new size. Trade-off for sure. I only need a 6 hour battery for mine, so its' a no-brainer.

at first it looks stunning, but the more i look at the nano, the less i like it. Sure it's awesome to be that thin but it's too enlongated for my taste. The screen could be a little lower, and that nubby thing below the wheel looks silly. It reminds me of an airhead taffy thing with a screen...

The proper ratio for the black model would have been 1:4:9. Any black monolith should be those proportions.

Of course then it would have been too thick to slide into the new in-dash receivers that are coming out that take an iPod Nano like an old cassette tape.

Edit: This used to read 1:3:9. Don't Panic pointed out my brainfart and inability to engage in simple mathematics.

It's not clear though. They do say it will charge via Firewire:

"Charging via USB or FireWire to computer system or power adapter"

But that doesn't say syncing with firewire

You could pull DC off of the firewire pins and still not build in a Firewire PHY. You'd think Apple could afford to sell them to themselves, though.

find this kind of strange too. yes the nano is really nice - but the mini is also very nice. i would have liked:

1. ipod photo/video 40 & 60 GB
2. ipod mini photo 6 & 8 GB
3. ipod nano 4 GB
4. ipod shuffle 1 & 2 GB

the phone is a dissapointment indeed. k750 and w800 kicks its ass!

They've already said the connector is compatible with the standard dock connector, so my guess is that it's a mechanical device (sleeve?) to make the nano fit in either the mini's dock or full size dock (or both somehow).

My 1G iPod's battery was working great, then the HD crashed and I sent it in for repair. When I got it back (got a different one back actually), the battery life was crap. During the course of sending it out and waiting for it to return, the warranty had ended so I was screwed. Did I vandalize Apple's advertisements? No. I bought an aftermarket replacement battery for $25 and got on with my life. Sheesh!

- look, it has everything on the bottom! headphone socket & usb connector! WTF? that makes practical wearing of nano only possibel with a frigging lanyard!

Or in your pocket. Your pocket is below your head (except for a few people who post here) so you want to put it in your pocket upside down so when you pull it out it's in your hand in the correct position to manipulate the controls.

That's what I meant. A little sleeve that sits in a standard iPod dock so that the nano will fit and line up properly in it.

I've been saying this for a long time. The shuffle mechanism is not random! It tends to bunch songs from one artist. Proving this is not easy, however.

what are the screen size and resolution comparisons between the nano and the iPod Photo, which i already have? the color screen on the nano begs the question...

iPod: 220 x 176 pixel resolution, 0.18-mm dot pitch, 2" screen
iPod nano: 176 x 132 pixel resolution, .168-mm dot pitch, 1.5" screen

I know a lot of you don't like the look of the iPod nano, and I understand.

However, if you look at it from a "merge iPod shuffle with iPod" angle, it just makes sense.

The only way to keep the small width was to make it taller. The iPod look (shuffle aside) has always been "rectangle, screen at the top, controls in the middle". From the 1st 5GB iPod to the iPod nano, it's a visual constant.

Even people who haven't heard of the nano will say "is that a new iPod?" when they see one.

What are you people talking about. The iPod nano is SHORTER than the iPod mini. The iPod nano is 3.5", and the iPod mini is 3.6". geeez.

Sure it's small, but 2 Gb for $200 and $250 for 4 gb. That is way too small and way too expensive. Usually it's better for the same money, IMHO, Apple messed up this one.

A 2GIG mem stick is like $300...and your get an ipod attached to this one...
