…My question is how it holds 25,000 photos. I thought that was the capacity of the 60 GB iPod…?

I think the photo capacity is more linked to the limits of iPhoto. The actual photos get resampled for the iPods since most people won't need the full-res version with the always and to take up less space.

cool, but...

This is sweet... so small, thin, cohesive, and yet, uninspired.

I was expecting a whole new form factor and an extension of the iPod line rather than a retooling and thinning of the original white iPods.

I love the original iPod design, but was hoping for something new (like that cylindrical mockup). Innovation is highly important to me re: Apple and its products, and this new model feels "lazy" and modified.

The criticisms of iPod has been the lack of features and the "riding-the-trend-and-giving-customers-an-easy-but-simplistic-approach" rather than the possible catchings-on of more elaborate and feature laden music devices. Hate to admit it, but Sony's new mini-type MP3 player is sexy, exciting and not too difficult to work (although it still does not beat iPod).

Is Apple forsaking the original mini crowd that adores the colors and the metal body?!?! If this is replacing the minis, will it have a backlash? Will the Apple brand be strong enough at this point to win converts and carry-along the devotees?

Incidentally, once storage goes up and prices drop, I will consider getting this bulimic brother. But for now, it's too much like my original iPod color to warrant another purchase.

With these tiny baby steps, the video iPod might be on its way in say... 2010.

i think the new iTunes looks horrible, its too square, i dont like it.

although the nano is absolutely awesome, i still think my iPod, the 30GB iPod Photo is the best iPod theyve ever made. Good size physically, and 30GB is perfect for photos and music. 20GB isnt enough and 60GB version is too thick.

lovin the nano tho. making me laugh these mini owners going 'i prefer my mini'. u wont get a non mini owner going 'yea yeah, mini is much better than the nano'

Student Union Promo?

If your on the Apple store web page and click on the Student Union banner you get an error. If you go to the Apple store education wen page though you get the Student Union promo page with the iPod Mini and everything.

The page is the same as it was before saying 'iPod Mini' and no talk about the Nano, I hope the continue the offer (which is going until September 24th) so I can get a iPod Nano (or at least $179 towards a higher model iPod) :D

You want cylindrical? They don't make curved LCD screens quite yet, and if they did, you want to be twisting the iPod body to read the screen?

/cry

No firewire
Less space
It may be small, but I kinda like the mini better

Hot D*MN, that thing is sexy. oh my lord, frickin' awesome!

After a few minutes:

good lord, what will this do to the flash memory market? (prices through the roof, except for apple which I'm sure pre-negotiated, followed by plunge when supply catches up and they make this stuff like it's paper)

And, oh my god, no mini?

4 GB to 20 GB is quite a jump, particularly given it goes from TINY to pretty hefty. Where's the 8-12 GB, size of mini or maybe a bit bigger? That's a major hole in apple's lineup, I'd say. Of course, they'll sell so many nano's, it's not even funny. And maybe the full size will get a shrink sometime in the future? *dreams*

Damn it, i love it so much yet the max capacity is only 4 GB!!! WTF is that all about. DAAAAAAAMMMMMNNNNN IT...I'M SO MAD RIGHT NOW. - partially because I don't know what to do -

1) sell my 3rd gen ipod for nano 4gb and have to SELECT songs
2) or keep my 3rd gen for another year and wait for nano to be 6 or 8 gb and let it auto sync....

AHHHH~ DECISIONS....grrr...

and I hate the lanyard idea...it's so asian...UGH...and i can say it considering I AM ASIAN...
YUCK - lanyards and ipods

If it's the standard dock connector you can get a firewire cable though. I brought a 30Gb Photo and it was a USB connection but I just brought a Firewire cable and it works fine.

Edit: No you're right it does just say USB doesn't it....hmmm

It's not clear though. They do say it will charge via Firewire:

"Charging via USB or FireWire to computer system or power adapter"

But that doesn't say syncing with firewire

AGAIN...

Ok, I have to write this once more...

THE IPOD NANO IS GORGEOUS, and already one of the BIGGEST feats in industrial design by Apple...simply amazing AND ALREADY worthy of unanimous praise...this is gonna sell like hot coffee!

I just don't know what to do with my Silver Mini...oh yeah, I am gonna keep it too!!!

GO GO GO APPLE! SHOW THEM THE NAILS!!

CREATIVE - DEAD
DELL - DEAD
SONY - DEAD

bah

its cool.... im tempted to buy one... but will hold off... i dont need it...

the phone is garbage. I have 250 songs on my treo... and it does a lot more than that POS

WOW! They dropped the storage and upped the price! Where do I sign!

Somewhere there's a graveyard full of 6 GB minis and 30 GB and 40 GB iPods.

I wonder if Apple fires their designers who invent products with too good of value.

This is absolutely gorgeous design. And the price is incredible, considering the cheapest 4GB compact flash you can get right now is $215. The only truly puzzling aspect is the battery life. It must be the color screen that is just killing it - either that or they went for a tiny battery at the expense of capacity.

The elimination of the iPod Mini is just strange. Although it would confuse the pricing structure somewhat to keep the Mini's - a 6gb mini priced somewhere in between $249 and $299 would seem to be cannibalized by both the nano and the regular iPod, for instance - it's clearly a different machine. The colors alone are enough to maintain a niche market at least - although I suppose that's what they're going for with the "nano tubes".

The size of this thing is amazing, however. It's about the same length, twice the width, and actually THINNER than the shuffle.

Now all us ipod photo/colour owners need is updated FIRMWARE to include those neat features that the nano now sports, like the lock and the clock.

The lock is a neat idea, when i saw the movie of the lock in action, I just said, that rocks...

SO COME ON APPLE... give us ipod photo / colour owners the updated firmware !!!

All Ive been able to think about today is how I can make a quick $250. I already have a mini and a shuffle, but holy flying crap. I want one BAD.

Black is beautiful

I'm glad they went black too. I was wishing for a black ipod for a long time (the U2 with the red wheel doesn't do it for me).

I think this should be the new future look for Apple for pro products. I'd love the next generation mactel powerbook model to be black anodized alumnium (that would be HOT!)

oh, man, this is so way the hell better than that cylindrical mockup. Looks better, more screen space, way better. Sure, it isn't that new, but then... this is by far the sexiest out there yet, no question. And, it's way, way easier to use than if they went with some other form factor.

I agree, though, that lack of colors could hurt sales, though they do have those multi-colored cases. And, black and white are great.

This should sell rediculously fast, though. I'm excited.

Until you forget the 4-digit code.

Perhaps not better, but at least something different. Really, the iPod/nano scheme is not much different than the original iPod's looks. Now, I know that they'd want to keep a popular facade from changing, but they managed to modify it somewhat with the mini and still make it highly popular. The shuffle...well, the shuffle is just kind of a shiny USB drive. Not that I'm knocking the nano (still looks like an awesome piece of hardware at a killer price for the features), or the shuffle (I love mine), but the mini seems like the biggest deviation from the original iPod concept (beyond perhaps the 3G iPod).

Having argued with myself for the past hour, I've decided not to buy a Nano. Why?

I have a 6GB Mini. That serves its purpose excellently - I don't want a reduction in battery life or capacity, while a colour screen isn't very useful to me. The only advantage of the Nano is its thickness (I'm a huge fan of thin gadgets) but it's not really worth the hassle of selling my Mini. I guess I'm going to wait until the 5th-generation iPods arrive. Then I'll be excited :D

iTunes

Per Macworld:

A "Smart Shuffle" feature has been added that lets users control how likely they are to hear multiple songs from the same artist or the same album using a preference slider. "We've got a lot of people saying our shuffle is not random," mused Jobs.

I've been saying this for a long time. The shuffle mechanism is not random! It tends to bunch songs from one artist. Proving this is not easy, however. It's possible, for instance, for a random program to still make all the songs play in order - just not likely. But where you notice this is that there may be an artist that you just don't have alot of music from, so you notice when they come on - and then you hear another - and two songs later, another - from that same artist.
