Per Macworld:

A "Smart Shuffle" feature has been added that lets users control how likely they are to hear multiple songs from the same artist or the same album using a preference slider. "We've got a lot of people saying our shuffle is not random," mused Jobs.

I've been saying this for a long time. The shuffle mechanism is not random! It tends to bunch songs from one artist. Proving this is not easy, however. It's possible, for instance, for a random program to still make all the songs play in order - just not likely. But where you notice this is that there may be an artist that you just don't have alot of music from, so you notice when they come on - and then you hear another - and two songs later, another - from that same artist.

Dave

It also seemed that shuffle preferred songs more recently listened to. So...

Does this actually actively change the shuffle? I've noticed that iTunes seems to have a "set order" for random upon startup and doesn't change until you restart the app. That is, many times I've stopped listening for a while, gone back and started a song that shuffled to one I heard before, after which the song shuffle was exactly the same as what I was listening to earlier.

So is there no black dock or black lanyard/headphones to match the black nano?

In the Apple store on the website they list the dock and lanyard but there is no color choice...and the photos show white gear.

white headphones = ipod. I can't see them changing that.

AAPL hit a new high (again)

49.09$US as of this writing.

It was a given, of course, since I sold at 47.70$US a few weeks ago.

(bang head on wall for not getting more while it was down at 34$US a few months ago)

Question about headphones

I can't seem to find pictures of the bottom of the unit. Will it takes regular 1/8" headphones?!

Edit: yes it does, just saw the "specs" page.

mixed feelings...

Obviously the nano is gorgeous. However, dropping the very popular mini? I'm gonna miss it... :(

If anything, the nano should have replaced the shuffle, and then they could've bumped the capacity of the mini to 8-10 gigs. That would have seemed more feasible to me. Also the aluminum casing seemed less scratch prone. Having said all that I want one!!!! Unfortunately I already have a shuffle and 60 gig iPod....decisions decisions... :D

The Nano's look great. But I'm very disappointed that they've d/c'ed the Minis. The Minis are awesome with the aluminum and coloring.

Bad. Not that I care, but every girl in my school prefers the color of a mini to the sleekness of a full iPod. I'm not sure it's a good idea to kill the "iconic" mini. Other than that it's awesome, albeit stretched. Hopefully we see this in more colors at some point.

The Nano is hot, but, at 4 gigs, pointless. I'll buy one as soon as they release it in a size larger than my current 4 gig mini. Shouldn't be long.

Nano: An Underwhelming piece of junk

Sure it's small, but 2 Gb for $200 and $250 for 4 gb. That is way too small and way too expensive. Usually it's better for the same money, IMHO, Apple messed up this one.

Yeah, I can't find any good pics of the black nano either, all I got was this one:

Try Apple's PR site (apple.com/pr). They've got links to images for the press that are very high res.

Mac in Black?

I would wager that 2/3 of all ipod nanos sold will be black, and it would appear that they constitute a somewhat new design direction, at least in terms of colour. Would it be presumptuous to assume that future Macs would also come in the same colour scheme (shiny black). This would probably apply to powerbooks and powermacs, specifically, and may be introduced with the x86 architecture. We'd have white with the iConsumer line and black with the powerUser line....?

ur such a big fat liar and u know it. u want one so bad

Nope no desire for it whatsover, I think it's ugly. I really like the way the mini looks, now if they'd put a colour screen in the mini and made that a 6gb flash drive it would be a different matter.

Been away all afternoon, and look what I missed! Beautiful. I'm ordering a black 4GB one now :D

edit: looks like I'm a sucker then. Yes it's a bit expensive, but I want to carry my music and not even know it (weight/size), and this fits the bill to a T.

edit2: I remember me clearly slating the iPod Mini when they launched it, bashing it for being too expensive and so on. Guess what, I own one.

I'd hope that will be the case. the packaging for Pro versus consumer is already black vs white. Black anodized aluminum powerbook please - credit card ready!

Why don't they just rename the company iPod?

If someone has $200 billion in cash laying around, they could buy the iPod line and let Apple get back to making computers.

There Apple goes, sterilizing a fun, colorful design. It seems like Apple doesn't understand that people like color in their lives. They did it with the iMac, then with Aqua, then they came out with the swiss cheese G5, and now they killed the mini for the nano. They seem to want to make everything black, white or brushed metal.

As for the USB 2 thing, that is just Apple kissing up to the PC market. PC Users have USB 2 more often than Firewire and more people own PCs, so I guess even Apple is into Mac marginalization now. Up until a year or two ago most Macs didn't even have a USB 2 port. The USB 2 thing is one of my least favorite aspects of the shuffle since it takes 4 hours to update since I have no USB 2 port on my GRAPE iMac.

Someone on Slashdot said that QT7 now supports VBR AAC... Is that true? (there IS an update to Qt7 in the updates, after all)

Except for those poor sods who bought an eMac last April and don't have USB 2 (like my sister) but have firewire. Looks like it will be an old mini that she gets.
You can buy the dock which has firewire or get the firewaire cable...check the Apple Store for iPod Accessories...
