Being Flash based though is there an issue with Firewire? The tech specs say "Stores data via USB flash drive" But I guess the dock connector adapter will fit on a firewire powered dock, so in theory it should work!

Nope. From this article

According to an Apple representative we spoke with, the new iPod nano can be charged over either a USB 2.0 or FireWire connection, but the nano will sync only over USB 2.0.

To everyone that is complaining that USB is slower then Firewire.

it depends. USB2 is 480 mbit/sec. Firewire400 is slower (400mb/sec)

Only Firewire800 is faster. So you should not complain because you will not notice any difference when transferring small files like mp3's. Because the reason that the transfer seems to be slow is because there are a lot of small files. If you would have one big file, of 2GB, you would notice the difference.
But i am really sure that firewire800 doesnt help you getting your small mp3 files to your ipod any faster, so please stop complaining.

i think it is a pitty that the mini is no more and there are not many color options.

But the iPod nano is a very sleek, beautifull piece of equipment :D

I'm not worried about the speed, just bummed I don't have USB 2 and there is no firewire on the nano

Why is everybody crying about the lack of firewire? Don't you realize that for the vast majority of flash memory it's write speeds barely exceed usb 1 speeds. Firewire serves no benefit here. Be prepared to wait around if you wanna fill the Nano up in one sitting..

theifs?

Are we not forgetting the screen lock?
well..
okay.

But it's one step closer to being burgle proof, and you can't wave a finger at that.

At least charging will work via Firewire, so it will charge from a sleeping connected Powerbook, hopefully. I'm keen to hear reports of the sound quality. Is it like the Shuffle in that respect, with its superior bass response or not? If it is, then I'm in, otherwise I prefer the 6GB mini.

Although I'm on my own...

I still think Firewire may work for syncing. Apple state you can charge over Firewire so I see no reason it won't sync either. Apple state USB2 because they only ship with a USB cable and it is clear they are wanting to move away from FW but the connector is the same and the technology is not vaslty different, if at all, from the Shuffle and Mini before. When somebody gets one give it a go, I don't mind being proved wrong but there is no good reason not to include FW support. It isn't exactly a great deal of effort for Apple :(

And I am aware Apple state on the site that USB is required but still I hold out some hope that some ingenious person will try it and get it to work.

If only.

Firewire can achieve over 90% of its theoretical bandwidth. You are lucky if USB2 achieves 50%.

However for me the issue isn't speed. It is ports. My iBook may only have 1 Firewire port, but my Firewire drive has a pass-thru port, into which I could plug the next Firewire device. However my iBook only has 2 USB ports. At home I have a USB mouse, USB printer, USB graphics tablet, USB scanner, USB webcam, USB digital camera, and now USB iPod nano. Even with the scanner, printer, webcam and tablet plugged into a USB hub, I'd need 4 ports for mouse, hub, camera and iPod. I could elect to go mouseless when I need to sync the camera or the iPod (no great issue), but ugh, USB. At least both protocols are more than fast enough for flash memory drives.

And yes, when I have the money I'll get a Bluetooth mouse to remove one of the port contention areas. My phone has Bluetooth already, fortunately!

I'm hoping that Apple wakes up and puts 4 USB2 ports on their next generation of laptops. That, or a nano-port, where you simply slot the nano into the side of your laptop!

There Apple goes, sterilizing a fun, colorful design. It seems like Apple doesn't understand that people like color in their lives.

Wasn't the silver model the most popular though? I know a few girls that love the pink one so that may be a bit of a loss for Apple though.

Nope. As I mentioned earlier, I feel it's a step back design-wise (though the new features and color screen would have been sweet on a Mini). And the USB thing is just rediculous. Firewire is so much better and has been on every Mac since the 2nd rev of iMac.

Please, stop bitching...and yes, there is just a handful of Nano haters around here...the thing is truly revolutionary and yet another design marvel by Apple...they were able to, once more, reinvent the wheel.

Design/form factor: AWESOME
Weight/size: AWESOME.
Color screen: AWESOME.
Price: PRETTY OK.
USB 2.0: Almost as fast as a FW...what the hell are ya complaining about?
Storage: 2Gb and 4Gb, more than enough for most...if you want more, spend a few more dollars and get a 20Gb one. There is NO space for Minis anymore, any manager or stockholder would tell ya that...and aluminium/pink colors CANNOT be excuses to keep it...get real.

Oh yeah, you wanna give one of these in pink color to Elton John? Buy the Tubes and relax...but please, stop complaining, this thing is virtually unanimous.

FLAWLESS is the word.

He basically described all what I wanted to say. The nano's are SAWEEEET!

Ah I see, well I'm used to a shuffle so no probs there then!

first off usb 2.0 isn't any faster than firewire. it has a higher top speed but it rarely reaches it, usually hovers around 200 mbp/s. firewire has a consistent speed of 400mbp/s, thus being faster. but i think flash drive speeds are limited anyways. i personally love this thing, the old mini colours were all washed out and plain. nothing to match my ibook and imac. and 2 gigs is perfect for me, because i have maybe 400 songs that i love, so it works out.

It's not the speed that people are necessarily complaining about; it's that they don't have USB 2 ports! There are Macs out there which aren't 18 months old which can't use a nano easily since Apple were selling Macs without USB2 but with FW until April 2004. When the iPods were updated to USB cable only, it upset people but at least there was the option of buying a FW cable. Now it appears that it's gone too. I guess it might depend on how often you update your iPod but that initial load over USB 1.1 is going to be a killer...

"iPod nano Lanyard Headphones
Ready to ship: 4-5 Weeks £25.00"

Great. Really. I guess I'll try and find £27 of something different (that I want) to get my £18 off. If the dock was black, then I'd get it, but I don't think that can be guaranteed, and the device doesn't have a Firewire chip to perform syncs over and can only use it for power.

I'd get the 20GB iPod because it isn't that much more expensive (£30), but it is nearly 4 times the volume. However you do get a few more features thrown in. My music collection is liable to exceed 20GB when I rip it though, so I think I'd rather just have my favourites on a 4GB small device than them all on a large device.

The nano is like getting a 4GB flash drive that looks good, with a built-in iPod and content visualiser for free. You can't complain really!

Firewire and USB are totally different protocols and require totally different electronics. If there's no firewire electronics (just enough to extract power from the bus, but no real "intelligence"), it won't sync, period.
