Nah. I would never spend $200 on an iPod. That's why I have a shuffle. I only use it once or twice a week, so I couldn't justify that kind of expense. I imagine there are a lot of people like me.

I am with you man. I bought my 1Gb shuffle about a month ago, and that was after months of inner strife (really?) of whether I should even cave into the whole iPod thing. I finally chose the shuffle because, it was smaller than the iPod mini - or anything that would supersede it - and it had flash memory as opposed to HDD and it was a nice white with no faffy screen to contend with.
But this...niggles at me because Apple are ticking a lot of boxes that people were craving for, but still, I love my shuffle, its great. So I'm happy with my choice...I mean...It's only a piece of consumer electronics...isn't it?!

Not impressed

I still have a 5 year old flash mp3 player that will hold a 1gig smart media card and it only cost $50 5 years ago. This thing costs Apple like a $1 to make. Just another way to make the old men at Apple even richer. Apple is turning into Dell more and more. Nothing new, just selling old technology. Like x86. Too bad the REAL Apple Computer company has died.

Oh please, stop trolling...just read today's MacNN and you will see how much each of the Nanos or Shuffles cost...actually Apple is LOSING its margins, not increasing, due to competition...and don't commit blasphemy...comparing Dell to Apple is like saying that Rolls-Royce is like Yugo...the real Apple is still there, astounding everybody.

Not only that, but it's not even available yet, you can only pre-order at Amazon. Most of the uber-adopters are going to buy from places that have them in stock or ready for delivery.

When they are actually listed as in stock at Amazon, it will fly-

What if someone does not want to wear it as a lanyard? You have to keep it in your pocket upside down.

Ohhh, the agony......

Actually, its better that way anyways. When you pull it out of your pocket and raise it to eye-level, it's suddenly right side up. The same as if it was hanging by the lanyard.

I put my cell phone upside down in my pocket for the same reason.

Yeah I agree with that. I really liked the Mini. I have two 4gb green ones-- one I bought and one as a gift from my job. However, I just bought a black iPod Nano because it's the new hotness.

I love the minis. But I think they were a terrible support problem for Apple. I think they could have allowed for more colors in the Nano.

The way I see it is that you get 6 colors if you buy the tubes for $30 more. Apple realized people usually protect their iPods anyway with 3rd party accesories.
The tubes look pretty neat. Might need to see them in person before buying though. Everything on the Apple website always looks awesome.

Okay, so I bought a 2GB nano this afternoon at the Apple Store Carousel. Didn't mean to, just went to check it out and caved in after holding it in my hand for about 10 seconds. I plugged it into my Powerbook, and it said something about optimizing for Mac OS X. Later I plugged it into an XP machine and it appeared as a flash drive, but said it needed to be reformatted. Anyone know if I can still sync with OS X iTunes if I reformat it in the Windows filing system? Maybe I should just try it out - doesn't take too long to send all the data again.

PS - I don't know if this has been cleared up yet - last time I checked this thread only had like 200 posts, but write speed is very fast for flash. It blows my SanDisk flash drive away anyway.

if its the same as other ipods, which i assume it is, windows formatted ipods can be read by both macs and windows while mac formatted ipods can only be read by macs

Yet another reason not to live in Kali-fore-ne-ah. How is it possible to safely and prudently ride in the space between two vehicles in adjacent lanes?
Or in Asia. They make this look like amatures.

I see the Shuffle having these benefits over the nano:

- Can use as a Flash drive --- no extra cables to carry.

- Sports applications -- easier to hold in your hand while jogging.

- Considerably cheaper -- especially the 512MB model. Which is all you need for exercising.

- Easier to use controls -- can use without looking. Also, easier to hold and use at the same time due to the control positioning.

However, I do realize that the iPod nano will cut into the Shuffle's market somewhat so that is why I expect a discount in the near future.

I am sure Apple will be monitoring the sales figures closely.

ATTENTION

won't transferring music onto the nano be slower cuz it doesn't use firewire???

if so, how much slower??

Why the bashing on the Shuffle and its market?

People here have already said that nano is more expensive than mini and has less storage. How is such product going to cut into the Shuffle's market if the mini was not already doing so?

Two different products, two different markets.

Me thinks that you need to re-read my original post.

Don't take me out of context. I was defending the Shuffle. It is and continues to be a good MP3 player.

Why do people keep saying this? Writing to flash RAM is much much slower than both USB and Firewire speeds so it makes no difference at all what the interface to these things are.

No, I agree, there really is no room for a mini in this, it's just that when compared to the mini, the mini could compare favorably in many people's minds. And, given that the mini has been the player to beat, other companies players look and feel a lot like it-so I'm just saying a good portion of the population might end up buying them. Still, I'm WAY more tempted by the nano than I ever was by the mini, I think it's awesome. I just don't think it's a sure bet, they could lose a good number of customers who planned on a mini, but didn't budget for more or want less capacity.

The thing is that if everyone is trying to beat the mini than someone eventually will. With a product like the ipod its a balance of 50/50 fashion functionality and I see alot of ipod minis when there are to many of the same product people get bored and buy something different but if apple wants to stay on top in the mp3 world they need to constantly inovate so people dont get bored I say helo nano good bye mini and let the comppetition try and keep up. I give 3 months till theres an Nano copy out there.

No offence intended

In fact I was replying to quotes such as:

"However, I do realize that the iPod nano will cut into the Shuffle's market somewhat so that is why I expect a discount in the near future."

That's it.

Nano is awesome... but...

Greetings everyone...

I just picked up my first iPod today from my local Apple Store, the new Nano.
This is what I've been waiting for ever since the iPod hit the shelves 4 years ago. I must say that seeing is believing... you've got to hold one in your hand.

On another note, does anyone know if it is possible to use this as a flash drive? I don't seem to be able to find this functionality anywhere. Is it possible that a firmware update will bring this option to the Nano in near future?

Regards,

Beau

Absolute masterpiece

I can definitely see the Nano in the NY MOMA.

Congratulations, you've done it again!!!!! I'm going to get one and I don't need a personally music player. I just want to sit and look at it.

One of your best designs and one of the best pieces of industrial design that's ever existed. My jaw hit the ground when I saw it.

iPod Nano Commercial

Anyone else see the Nano commercial on ABC during the football game? It was pretty cool commercial.

The Nano's look great. But I'm very disappointed that they've d/c'ed the Minis. The Minis are awesome with the aluminum and coloring.

I'm really bummed the mini's are gone..... They were so awesome .... But I love the nano notheless. I just wish they could have kept the mini or trashed the shuffle instead of cutting the mini. The mini has a look no other iPod has. Gosh, now my old blue color 4GB mini is going to be really obsolete. Might have to go for the white 4GB nano. Gosh, I have a 2 year-old eMac (running on Panther) and an old mini. I feel so in the 1700's.
