cingular is dishonest

Wasn't a hard choice for me (Nano vs Moto). I don't want a MP3 (or Digital audio player) that generates more RF then a standard Walkman. I am afraid to death of Cancer? Possibly, but it is such a small capacity on the phone, and when I am listening to my iPod I don't want to be bothered. I do love my Motorola phones and think they work great for the most part, but this one isn't for me.

AT&T / Cingular messed with my credit report claiming I owed them money for breech of contract. This started when they put a mark on my credit saying I aborted my contract EARLY without paying the early cancelation fee, when in fact my contract was up 2 years PRIOR to my switching to Verizon (Meaning it was WELL after my contract expired).

I had (and do again) good credit up to that point, and I have no love for any company that puts marks on credit reports without even trying to contact their customer to resolve a dispute. I never received a call or letter from AT&T / Cingular in regards to that.

With that, I will never do business with them, no matter how cool their phones are, or how great their coverage is.

i also had trouble with cingular. cancelled early and paid thed $150 cancellation fee. sent check, which they cashed. then they billed my credit card. i disputed. then they sent to collections. kept getting letters. told them to take me to court and they stopped sending them. i would never do business with them again.

sprint sucks, too. i had to keep calling to get them to cancel my service after my contract time was up. now i'm on t-mobile and happy.

Huh, why did they skip he "micro" and go straight from "mini" to "nano"? So what's the next smaller one going to be called, the "pico"?

Not using micro leaves a slot open for the 0.85" or 0.7" disk-based iPod I want (with FireWire).

The white part is where the new nail is grown. So, clearly this thumb is from a person who does not grow, or age.

So, clearly the thumb belongs to an undead. Probably a vampire.

What we're seeing here is confirmation that Apple is in league with the vampires. Notice how the new iPod nano is black? And Steve always wears black? And Steve miraculously recovered from an uncurable cancer by drinking carrot juice?

The association has been there for a long time - just look at the symbolic bite out of the Apple. The old one used to have a red streak across it. Now the new one glows like the moon, the symbol of the night, the time of the vampires.

But now some guy in the marketing department has figured this out and he's being held captive. This is his cry for help. We're meeting just off the Interstate tonight at midnight in Cupertino with pitchforks and torches for a rescue.

It would make more sense to use stakes and holy water and go in during the daylight hours, but that's just not how its' done.

I think I might pick up a nano. My mini recently started to have the static issue. Hopefully Apple addressed this issue in the nano. My only complaint is the prices.

isn't anyone pissed that they took off the remote control port?

I have a 2nd Gen. 4GB silver mini, and I use it to control the music when I ride my motorcycle and have the ipod in my backpack using the griffin airclick mini...

I really want a black one, but then how will I control my tunes?!?!

Are you kidding me? Let me guess, you also pass people in between lanes and on the sholder "because you can fit". How about this: you put the iPod onto shuffle or into a long playlist, put it on hold in your backpack and focus on driving your dang motorcyle?

Perhaps because "mini" doesn't mean anything when it comes to units, so there's no connection?
"milli" -> "micro" -> "nano" -> "pico" not "mini" -> "micro" -> "nano" -> "pico"

don't you just love it when people generalize and think they know what kind of person you are?

no Mr. Green, I don't pass on the left, in between cars or anywhere else that I am not supposed to.

And if you think it's illegal to listen to music while driving a bike, then think again. There are helmet mounted systems available (like the one I have, made by www.autocom.co.uk) that let you do what people in cars have done all along without compromising your ability to drive the "dang motorcycle"

so please refrain on further useless comments and just answer the ipod nao related question...

Sony just released this hours after the nano.

God is it fugly. They still haven't learned.

Ugly, sure enough.

But the sad thing is Sony hasn't figured out that it's all about small now. Research shows people carry about 1,000 songs, that's it.

There is no point in bringing out these monsters that do nothing other than play music. Apple must be very pleased with this announcement since they are attacking yesterday's iPod.

Sorry, is there someone out there still longing for radio/XM/BT on the iPod? Come on guys, radio is so...out.

If you want a monster with everything, go buy an iRiver or Creative...that's why they are not selling well at all...simplicity is the key.

Well, I don't want a tuner (FM or sat) in my iPod - why waster the space, etc? However, I would love to see a deal with XM to get their exlusive content onto iTMS in a mix of free podcasts and paid for subscriptions or cheap indiviual downloads.

For example, I would GLADLY pay say $5-7 per month for a subscription to NHL game broadcasts and also a weekly NHL show. (Sirius brodcasts them all and charges you, what, $12 a month for the whole package... half that is resonable for just the hockey, imo).

I bet there are lots of people who would pay the same for a subscription to Howard Stern.

I completely buy the 1000 song number as an average, but to me the 6gb mark is really perfect. It gives you that 1000 songs with either some room to spare or some disk storage area. My wife, who is not a gadget person at all, showed me something about people that baffles me...

She has a 10gb scroll wheel iPod. She has about 8gb of music, and at first just copied the whole library over. Them she decided she wanted to clear it off and only have the stuff she actually listens to on there. Now she has about 5-6gb of music on her iPod.

I asked her why she did that, and she said that 1) it amde it easier to find what she wanted, 2) let her shuffle play and not get songs she doesn't like, and 3) liked having the extra space to 'grow into' as she got more music.

Even with the extra space available, she only chose to use about half of it. I think the 4gb nano will do just fine in terms of sales and customer satisfaction.

 I didn't say it was illegal, I did say it was dangerous and potentially irresponsible. Which it is. Anything that disctracts you from driving is dangerous, in a car or on a bike. A bike however is going to give you less margin of error for things like this.

And talking about 'controlling your tunes' on your bike sounds like exactly the kind of thing someone who passes between lanes during a traffic jam or goe 100mph 'because they can' would say.

On a less serious note, it took me a minute to figure out your were in the UK... you said that you didn't pass on the left, and I thought, "OH, that makes me feel better!" until I saw you were in England, where that would be a bad thing. :)

New black ipod nano

As i think people have said before, I had quite the challenge trying to decide wether i wanted the recognizable white or the new sleek black  . I ended up going with the black, simply because it's new and different :). Ordered it last night, should be here soon! I was wondering if somehow someone would create a poll to see who got the white and who got the black and who got none. I think this is going to be the "new ipod" and hopeuflly i'll go over really well adn we will start seeing more accessories for it.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, but doesn't anyone think that maybe the reason the iPod Mini was replaced with a smaller, thinner iPod (rather than just having the Nano as another line of iPods) is because the regular iPod is going to be shrunken down to about the size of the now departed Mini?

This seems like the logical place for Apple to go next. Ever since I saw the Mini and got my Shuffle, the regular iPod has seemed way too large. By shrinking the regular iPod, Apple would then have the hard drive based regular iPod (in a smaller size than currently offered), the smaller and thinner iPod Nano (basically, a flash based mini-iPod), and the even smaller Shuffle (for exercise or those who don't want to spend much money).

Seems perfect to me.

Dude, give those of us over 40 a break! Apple is going to have to bundle a jeweler's loupe with the ipod if it gets any smaller!!!

LOL, kidding. The nano is an elegant, winning design.

i seriously hope they bring the original ipod to anodized aluminum or some other ipod... that's the greatest material on earth, feels awesome and doesn't stain or scratch. i'm thinking of buying a mini just out of fear they'll never bring it back.

"lane-splitting" is legal in California

Can motorcycle riders "split" lanes and ride between other vehicles?

Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner.

So, don't bring your "high horse" to California....

I lasted about 19 hours.

I loved the nano, like everyone else.

But I fly very long distances, so I needed the extra battery life and the two extra gigs of hard disk space.

But I am weak. I bought the 4 gig nano. Logic could only hold me back for 19 hours.

Oh well, no buyers remorse at all.

where are you guys buying them? The freaking flagship store in soho hasn't even got them yet - BASTIDS.

I've got my confirmation of shipping now. 4GB Black Nano. 1 - 2 days apparently, so because of the weekend I'll probably get it on Monday.

Anyway, in comparison to the Creative Zen Nano Plus:

http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=12720&nav=2

iPod Nano:

Volume: 24.8cm^3
Weight: 42g
Battery Life: 14 hours with 128kbps AAC
Song Capacity: 1000+ songs at 128kbps (4GB)
S/N: ?
Display: High Resolution Colour LCD
Styling: General consensus is 'unf' :)
Selling Points: iTMS, World Clock, Calendar, Alarms, Games, Photos
Price: 2GB £139 / 4GB £179

Creative Nano Plus:

Volume: 28.5cm^3
Weight: 22g + AAA battery (how much does an AAA battery weigh?)
Battery Life: 18 hours with 64kbps WMA
Song Capacity: 500+ songs at 64kbps WMA (1GB)
S/N: 90dB
Display: Low resolution monochrome LCD
Styling: Colours are nice. Chunky looking around the LCD though.
Selling Points: FM Radio, Record from Line In
Price: 256MB £50 / 512MB £65 / 1GB £82 (Dabs.com)

The use of 64kbps WMA files is rather disingenous of Creative in my opinion. Most people have 128kbps files, and they probably rip MP3s at even more. Also higher bitrate files tend to use more battery up, so the 18 hour battery life is rather cheeky. I might rip 20 hours of music at 64kbps VBR AAC and see how long my nano lasts, and how many songs I can get on it.
