Hopefully this wil be good news for iOS! Maybe iOS can finally start becoming a power OS. Everyday my eyes are wandering left & right to Windows & Android!

And what exactly are the features necessary to qualify it as a "power OS"?

If I were Cook, I'd 'rehire' Forstall to work on projects, just like what he offered to Mansfield. I don't want to see Forstall anywhere around Microsoft, Google or Samsung.

I sincerely doubt those three would take him.

I remember Cook said that Browet was the best candidate by far. And now less than a year he is gone. Strange.

Word has it that Mansfield in particular was not too fond of Forstal. My guess is that he isn't too popular around Apple given that Steve seemed to be the only one to keep him toned down. I think that after Steve's departure and death, he felt that he deserved more than he got given that he was really similar to Steve. After that happened, he just started rubbing people wrong and wasn't pleasant to work with. Given that idea, I think that Forstal would not be wanted back even if it was for special projects. I don't think that Tim likes him all that much either..

So was Papermaster. Not every exec works out the way they intended to.

this might be an indication of apple ACTUALLY starting to go down. I wonder why people in this forum don't consider this a threat? Because of map? Because of less usability of passport?

Which of course could potentially open the door for Mansfield to come back in a more permanent role. Especially if Forstall played some role in him leaving in the first place.

Can we please ban the use of the word: skeuomorphism?

What I would prefer is that people stop automatically thinking its ugly and a thing to be derided as if it is fact. Visual appeal of something is about as subjective as you get.

But that's just an opinion of course...

What APIs did you wish would materialize for you to work around that didn't in iOS 6?

I assume you're not a developer because your statement that nothing new showed up in iOS 6 gives it away.

When I say features I mean things the average consumer can pick up and say "Oh this wasn't here before!" instead of developers and the changes/additions to API's.

I mean passbook could've literally been an app on the App Store (like the Podcast app) and Maps was not anything new but different.

iOS3 the next lowest upgrade IMO brought push notifications, copy-and-paste, search, landscape keyboard; nothing exciting but good new features.

Yes I wondered if Scott was being scolded when he did not appear in the Keynote last week...

And just today I was grimacing at the terrible monkey **** brown lettering of Find My Friends in the preferences...

And how many of us have ever had let alone seen a brown leather calendar?

Or seen a reel to reel tape recorder in the podcast app that functioned miserably when it first appeared?

And check out the number of different colored interfaces for iTunes, App store pod casts. mail etc... its all different!

I like Scotts work when he was under the thumb, but now, his true colors are showing and sadly it is time to go and with Ives there WOW! Its going to be good and unified!

It's really odd that they kill off optical drives, refuse to support blue-ray, and somehow still want to use old traditional skeumorphisms like brown leather desk pad calendars and reel-to-reel tape recorders.

I'm surprised the calculator doesn't simulate paper coming out of a roll on top or the keyboard simulating typewriter strokes and a push bar to continue typing on the next line.

I think that was one of the reasons they got him to come back. They valued his presence more than Scott and they probably were looking for a good time to get rid of him. Again, I just think that without Steve, Scott got way too ambitious and clashed way too much for his own good. I hoped that this wouldn't have been the case given what I had read about him but it appears to have happened.

Good riddance John Browitt. I have not updated to ios6 because of mapsgate and will just wait and see...

Judging by his pic, he looks like a tool. Probably one of the reasons why they ousted him.

Not really odd. Apple considers optical media the next floppy drive. If you need it buy external. As for blu-ray. Not surprised either. Not only does it compete with iTunes, Apple doesn't want to bother with a form a DRM they don't control (DVD being an exception) and that is better suited in the home theatre and not on the computer. Again, the only support is the most basic and if you want a drive, buy external.

Also sad to see Forstall go. Kind of sobering, one screw up and you're out. Doesn't matter how long you've been there, how much good you've done and how ingrained you've been into the culture...After the success of iOS 4 and iOS 5, he probably went on relax mode. Poof.
This is actually a very Jobsian move. Cold and bold. And quick.

John had nothing to do with the iPhone or iOS

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this since I am replying after only reading page 1: but: Steve Jobs was also forced out of Apple before his glorious return.

It has been mentioned. And it should be pointed out that things were very different back then as they were today.
