My personal observation:
Innovation at Apple clearly died with Steve Jobs.
Monetization at Apple gradually came with Tim Cook.

Congratulations. Without these ads Apple would obviously be doomed. (Yes, that was sarcasm…)

Since the inception of IAPs I have not purchased a single app/game that has IAPs.

The day the first ad appears on maps, the app will be deleted from my devices.

Absolutely agree 100%. 10-5-11 was the day Apple Lost it’s Soul.
 
Edit: For those disliking this without bothering to comment back, please answer one simple question. If it is not being done for profit reasons, why wouldn't Apple just include a voucher in the box for a free cable/charger if needed?
What's stopping people from simply redeeming the voucher for a free cable or charger regardless of whether they needed one or not, just to leave around or to resell online?

I also don't think that people are not saying that Apple isn't doing this for profit. The point is that just having a profit motive doesn't automatically negate any of the good such moves are poised to make.

It's not an "either or" situation here.

Ads, not including chargers and/or cables with some products. It all adds up to a lot of extra profit overall. They lied and fooled people that it was for the environment with the cables/chargers. I wonder if they can somehow spin this as something admirable and get those same fools to fall for this as well.
I feel that at the end of the day, the two are not mutually exclusive. It can be true that the exclusion of chargers in boxes was done in part to lower the cost of manufacturing a product (which is not a bad thing in itself), and it can also be true that more and more people have enough cables / chargers lying around at home, any extras would simply be sitting around collecting dust (to be summarily disposed later) and excluding them can result in a very significant reduction in the volume of e-waste generated years down the road.

I believe that the exclusion of a charger and EarPods in each iPhone 12 was what allowed Apple to keep selling it at the same price despite what were probably higher costs. I will take that over an accessory I have no use for.

I have also explained in an earlier post why I feel that I am not against the idea of Apple getting into ads, not least because they are in a unique position to "do ads right" in a manner that aids in app discovery while also respecting user privacy in a way that other ad platforms such as Facebook simply have no incentive to do.

In an email to developers this week, Apple announced that app-related ads will begin appearing in the App Store's main Today tab and in a "You Might Also Like" section at the bottom of individual app listings starting Tuesday, October 25, in all countries except China. All ads in the App Store have a blue background and an "Ad" icon.

"With a Today tab ad, your app can appear prominently on the front page of the App Store — making it some of the first content users see when they begin their App Store visit," says a page on Apple's website about App Store ad placements.

This marks the first time that developers will be able to run ads in the Today tab, which until now has only displayed content handpicked from the App Store's editorial staff, without any paid placement. And with the "You Might Also Like" section, developers will now be able to promote their apps on other apps' pages.

In a tweet, legal expert Florian Mueller argued the "You Might Also Like" ads are "another means of increasing the effective app tax rate, forcing developers to buy ads on their own app pages in order to avoid that others steer customers away from there."

App Store ads were previously limited to search results based on keywords and the "Suggested" section of the Search tab. With ads in the Today tab and the "You Might Also Like" section, the App Store will now offer four advertising options in total. Apple first announced plans to expand its App Store ad placement offerings in July.

In August, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple wanted to nearly triple its current advertising revenue to at least $10 billion per year in the future. In addition to the App Store, Gurman said Apple plans to launch search result ads in Apple Maps next year, while traditional banner ads are already displayed in Apple's News and Stocks apps.

I would find this extremely annoying, if not for the fact that I haven’t stepped foot inside Apple‘s App Store for quite some time. These days, I learn about new and useful apps through word of mouth and trusted sources, and I don’t consider Apple‘s App Store a trusted source.

More ads in Apple‘s App Store just means I’m going to avoid going anywhere near it harder than ever.

Good thing the search feature is easily accessed, I barely notice the ads. It'd be nice if someone made an app that could block ad content across the device!
The App Store’s search feature is all but useless. You can enter the name of the specific app you’re searching for, and quite often you will go through pages of search results including tons of scam apps before you finally give up and search for the app elsewhere.
 
and this is why apple made SUCH a fuss over 3rd party advertising, it had NOTHING to do with privacy concerns, it was merely so apple could implement their own ads services on its customers, quite frankly that is anti competitive and so they should be sued to high heaven

It’s like going into Bestbuy and seeing a big sign for Sony. As opposed to someone going through my mail to sell me a product. Big difference.
 
Not a good thing for all Apple users if this sets a new trend. Personally, I have a very minimalistic approach to what I need on my phone, so my app list is small, currently 20, and could be as low as 10 if I wanted. With that said, I visit AppStore perhaps 2-3 times a year if that, as I do not need to download anything new and all the current apps are set to auto update.

100%. I could give a hoot about ads in a app store. They are not blocking me from doing anything. Unlike the purported ads in Apple Maps, which could be a potential distraction as one is driving. I have to laugh when posters say they are going to the app store less. Okay go less, don't go at all. Nobody is going to care.
 
On the surface: yes, nobody likes to see more ads. But fundamentally they will shoot themselves in the foot by undermining the editorial content. Until now, Today was the best of the App Store that Apple would pick for you every single day. Developers were honored to appear there and it had a big impact.

I feel like this move is undermining the trust in this special Today tab placement. Now you can just buy your way up with your shi**y crypto or clash of clans clone app.
The special place every Apple product used to hold in people, which Steve jobs created, looks like is going away.
Seems like Tim Cook is just another common ceo, building on Apple quality of hardware and software, which are the only things remaining.
I wonder, how many years more will iPhone inspire me to be a better version of myself??

I don't see the downside in that. What's stopping people from doing that with a charger/cable that comes with the phone?

I also think, the current state is probably because of both, more profits and less e-waste.

As for ads: In my case it would erode trust in the app store and in apple in general even further. They always sucked at selling ads and most people were probably happy that this worked nearly as "well" as their forays into social networking. I really hate those sponsored search results in the app store that take up half the screen - it's just an annoyig waste of time and screen estate for people who realize that these are ads, it cheapens the experience and feels like a sleazy scam aimed at that quite large group of people who don't read anything on a computer before clicking on it.
 
You do not seem to be following what apple has done in 11 years. But to each their own, I suppose. It what has this have to do with ads in the App Store? Nothing. Just some blind criticism.

yes folks. This is to increase profit margins. Because Apple is a for-profit company. For-profit companies want to make more profit, and this goes toward that goal.

I gets ads on my $2000+ computer. They are online but they are still there even with robust router and browser level blocking.

If I spent $10,000 or $100 on a computer they’d be there too.
Not with a decent ad blocker. And even if there were, that would be no excuse to infest another area of my life with ads.

iAd helped smaller developers by allowing them to still monetize their apps while offering the apps for free to attract more users. App Store ads hurt smaller developers by allowing large corporate entities with an advertising budget to always be pushed to the top. They are completely different services with completely different consequences for the App Store ecosystem and developers.

Oh, but we're making fun of the "Steve Jobs would never" people so sharing an image like this without context is fine ;)

I am pretty sure 99.9% of the people replying here know this, but maybe someone needs to draw that out for you since you don't seem to realize it.
