I think the 16gb is there in base Air but they’re locking it off with software.

We shall see. I doubt that will be the case for photo/video editing software though.
I can edit 2x 4K streams on a 2018 iPad Pro with only 6gb RAM faster than my 2019 MBP with a quad core i7 and 16gb RAM - all without a fan. Sorry, but I disagree with you...with 16gb, the M1 MBP will be fine.

so questions.

whats the advantage of having a fan in the pro and no fan in the air?

is Touch Bar worth the extra over the air? im still using a 2013 mac that is literally dead

I thought Jobs said, "Apple doesn't ship junk". In 2020, a laptop with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage is considered shipping junk AFAIK. To offer a usable laptop with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage would cost them less than $100 more, but it would cost the consumer $400 more. Enough about the BS about going green, when they know they're deliberately selling laptops which won't be usable in a year.

Just to reiterate it, because some people still haven't seen it: This is a replacement for the base model MBP 13 that had only 2 ports and the slower chips before. The higher-end MBP 13 is still available.

I guess that higher-end MBP 13 (14), the MBP 16 and the iMac will all get an Apple chip with more performance, especially graphics.

Brilliant, so man fantastic features but the main con is x2 Thunderbolt ports as the only IO... that just won't cut it. Even the 11" MBA had x2 USBA and x1 Thunderbolt...

Mini and MBP should have x4 TB ports.

So the 13" Pro is now a slightly thicker MBA with a fan for sustained performance and a touch bar?
It was pretty unavoidable that the Mac product line would be more compressed in terms of CPU diversity. It doesn’t make sense for Apple to have six different mobile processors (Intel-Mac lineup until today, ignoring differently clocked versions) using their own silicon. They’ll probably add a second mobile processor sooner or later, and they might clock things higher on the actively cooled models.

The MBP also should have more ports.

I was hoping for an updated 16" MBP to replace my mid-2009 MBP. I don't want to drop close to $3k on a computer that's over a year old... but I'm also not really ready to switch to ARM because I have a few Windows-based applications I need for work. I also prefer the larger screen size. I'm desperately in need of a new laptop but not really sure what to do - I'm disappointed in the options here.
I'm speculating we'll see a 16" ARM MBP by spring or summer.

Am confused about the difference between the

Apple M1 Chip with 8-Core CPU and 8-Core GPU
512GB Storage

and the

2.0GHz Intel Core i5 Quad-Core Processor with Intel Iris Plus Graphics
512GB Storage

Which one is faster? I have the 2018 model with 4 thunderbolt ports..not sure if I should upgrade now or wait a few months only the 2.0 ghz one comes with 4 thunderbolt ports

The 4 port 13" had a faster intel processor and a 32GB option. You just know in March/April a M1X is coming out for the 13" high end and 16" Macbook Pro's

So, do I understand correctly that you can connect only one external display to MacBook Pro or Air? Not two (maybe 2x 1080p?)

That’s how I see it - next step will be an updated 16” and maybe 4-port 13” machine with more powerful CPU and GPUS.

With only 2 Thunderbolt ports, on one side, will it be able to power 3 monitors?
I have the MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) which has 4 ports. I can power 4 monitors. 2 monitors using a single port on each side.

These are not 4k monitors.

Interesting to hear. For sure we're all interested to see some benchmarks!
