I thought Jobs said, "Apple doesn't ship junk". In 2020, a laptop with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage is considered shipping junk AFAIK. To offer a usable laptop with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage would cost them less than $100 more, but it would cost the consumer $400 more. Enough about the BS about going green, when they know they're deliberately selling laptops which won't be usable in a year.
For the majority of consumers it won’t be junk. Most people don’t have super huge storage needs these days on their local machines when cheap cloud storage exists.

Nice. I’ll be waiting on the next one with a 1080p webcam.
Knowing Apple, 5K will be standard before they ship 1080. WTF is wrong with them? It does suck.
Only 2 ports on the new MBP 13"? The old intel model had 4 ports !!!

I'm guessing when they release the next chip... M2? They'll use that in the top-tier MBP 13" + 4 ports and in the 16" as well.

The base only has 2 ports now. I bet the next releases are a + chip that's faster and that model will get 4 points, because, you know, charging more for ports is Apples DNA.

A base model newest-generation Dell XPS 13” comes with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD (and a pokey i3 CPU) for the same starting price of the Air at $999. Upgrading to 16/512 and an i5 costs $300 Extra vs $400 extra to upgrade the Air.

MacBook Pro. A lot of people rely on the MacBook Pro for things that are both CPU and Memory intensive. Even if Apple Silicon Macs use less memory on average, 16GB almost certainly isn’t enough for most Pros if you want to use your Mac for at least a couple of years.
What percentage of 13” MBP buyers actually ordered the 32 GB version? I’d say 90+% of current sales ship with 16 GB (or less).

Just to reiterate it, because some people still haven't seen it: This is a replacement for the base model MBP 13 that had only 2 ports and the slower chips before. The higher-end MBP 13 is still available.

I guess that higher-end MBP 13 (14), the MBP 16 and the iMac will all get an Apple chip with more performance, especially graphics.
Thanks for clarifying - I'd literally just posted how the MBP having only x2 ports won't cut it. Your post clarified that and it makes sense now!

I notice they're still selling in Intel Mac Mini with x4 TB ports - shame the M1 version only has 2.

well that's not "next week"

"Hey guys, we're switching to our own chips, they're sooo much faster! To prove it, here's some base models with vague benchmarks and no demos."

</rant>
EXACTLY.

It SOUNDS promising but there were no side-by-side demos to compare performance vs Intel machines in the videos. I wonder why?

Also, these don't replace the higher-end MBP Intel options, meaning they most likely aren't as powerful as those still. I think in the future we'll see an M1S or M1X chip or something for these higher-end Macs.

And even the top spec'd model only comes with 2 USB-C ports. That's pretty embarrassing. Since there is room in the chassis for 4, does that imply this new uber ARM chip can't handle the IO requirements of 4 ports at the same time?
Really, really embarrassing, Apple. This would also explain why the new Mini only has 2 USB-C and 2 USB-A when the 2018 model had the same two of the latter but four of the former.

And if you are chances of you using a 13” laptop to work with massive assets like that are pretty slim. You need a Mac Pro.
I know - I’ve got one.

I completely agree that for the vast majority of people, 16GB will be plenty (I went with 16GB on my current MBP because I don’t do anything massively intensive on it and it works fine for what I need), but it’s bound to generate confusion and bad press.

Personally, I think they should have stuck with the MBA and Mini and kept the Pro under wraps until they have a processor that can handle more memory, but what do I know ;)

Huh, they gave a number of examples....Logic Pro supports 3x the number of instruments & plugins for example. That’s a real world improvement over what was previously possible.

This does seem to replace the 2020 8th Gen Intel based 2-port 13" MacBook Pro model, with the higher-end 10th Gen 4-port 13" MacBook Pro still remains (yay!).

What I'm now wondering is what is the reason to go with an Apple Silicon Air over an Apple Silicon 13" Pro. The chip is the same (so long as you spec the Air accordingly), the ports are the same. The only question seems to be whether or not I want a TouchBar and how much faith am I putting in the fact that the lack of a fan in the Air will not suck in the way that the cooling in all 12" MacBooks and all 2018-2020 Intel MacBook Airs has been. Or am I missing something?

Them not updating the 4-port 13" Pro does pave the way for a greater shake-up when next year's 14" + 16" MacBook Pro redesign happens next year...

I am not really sure how excited i can be. Still till this day, several programs still don't run on apple silicon. I have an APPLE DEV KIT and I still can't get 80% of the programs I use to work on it. Chrome doesn't work, only half of Microsoft office programs, many VPNs, adobe creative cloud apps etc. I get yes they will work one day, but for a release next week seems like a tall order. If i ordered it and got it next week I could prob only use apple apps only.

So we have been waiting for one CPU the M1 so they can stick it in 3 last years products! Is that it?

no M1 Pro for the MacBook Pro just lumped in the Mini and Air one in a Pro machine!!!
Should they have put an A14 into the MBA instead? If the new 13” MBP is faster than the last Intel version, should they have dumbed down the performance of the M1 for the MBA, just so MBP buyers can feel better that they got something faster than the Air?

And if these systems had enough RAM to support that many simultaneous samples, that would mean something.

The lack of a fan in the Air just means the M1 is crippled and won't give you the peak performance that the MacBook Pro 13 will give you. It's an artificial crippling. They probably took the fan out of the Air and squeezed in additional battery instead.

Pretty impressive overall for a transition machine. All things considered, I'm still glad I grabbed a 10th Gen Intel to ride out the transition. But already excited for where these should be by the time I'm ready for an upgrade.

I remember when Intel said their graphics were so good you didnt need a dedicated graphics processor. Oh man. That was funny. Good times. Now Apple is telling me the same joke, and its still funny.
13” MBPs have come with integrated grap for a long time.

Yeah... but compared to which model of machine? Logic Pro is 3x faster than which Intel chip model?
