iPhone can perform much better than Android flagships with half the RAM.

Maybe Apple silicon doesn’t need as much RAM as an Intel chip since this is the first Mac with optimised software with dedicated hardware.
You're forgetting that android apps run needlessly in the background, while Apple notifications are centralized via a server and apps go to cache. That doesn't really work on a desktop environment where real multitasking is required.

Am I alone feeling more than disappointed about no body redesign? :(
And, they are comparing performance to Windows laptops, which again brings forth my favorite topic: is some sort of official 'Boot Camp' support for M1 Macs expected? No word on this so far.
They said at WWDC that Bootcamp is dead.
As for the redesign, that was to be expected.
Why do all the good stuff in one step?

I think we have to wait for the first reviews, benchmarks and tests, specially on Rosetta 2 performance.

Besides that, a good 'native' performance, Wi-Fi 6 (non-practical tech at this point), and claims of impressive battery life, I think I had made a good decision buying an 2020 Intel-based MacBook Pro past august.

For those we need max compatibility and reiiability over a yet-to-see impressive battery life, and don't care about iOS apps, the Intel-based Mac is still the best choice for Pros.

I think this M1 AS 13" MBP will be the typical unmature first-gen Apple device for early adopters, and it will be forgotten soon.

Proof of that is that 16-inch MBP, Mac Pro and the iMac are still Intel-based and will be for the next 8 months. I don't see Apple launching more Macs until 2021 WWDC.

Apple today introduced a new 13-inch MacBook Pro, its third announced Mac powered by the company's custom M1 Apple Silicon chip with integrated graphics processor.

The M1 chip boasts an 8-Core CPU and an 8-Core GPU featuring a 16-core Neural Engine, which when paired with the MacBook Pro’s active cooling system, is up to 2.8x faster than the previous generation, according to Apple, making it up to 3x faster than the best-selling Windows laptop in its class.

Machine Learning is up to 11x faster, and for on-device Machine Learning tasks that use the Neural Engine, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro is now the world’s fastest compact pro notebook, says Apple. It also features up to 17 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 20 hours of video playback, which is up to twice the battery life of the previous generation, making it the longest battery life ever on a Mac.

Other new features in the new 13-inch MacBook Pro include studio-quality mics, while Apple’s latest camera ISP in the M1 chip enables sharper images and more detail in shadows and highlights on video calls. The new MacBook Pro also includes Apple's Secure Enclave in the M1 and Touch ID, and features two Thunderbolt ports with USB 4 support.

The laptop weighs 3-pounds and features a Magic Keyboard, Retina display, and is available for the same starting price of $1,299, with an additional $100 discount for education customers. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is available to pre-order now, with shipping scheduled to begin next week.

Might be time to upgrade my MacBook Pro...my 2009 MacBook Pro...

Interesting specs. The battery life is insane.
The maximum RAM memory seems like a backward, but maybe with the new M1 processor, memory management is different than in Intel. I look forward for the first real-world reviews.

Ordered. Don’t think they take the money until it ships or something.

Only 2 ports on the new MBP 13"? The old intel model had 4 ports !!!
The M1 model replaces the lower tier 13” MacBook Pro with 2 Thunderbolt ports and 8th generation Intel processors. Apple is still selling the upper tier 13” Pro with 10th generation Intel chips and four Thunderbolt ports. Presumably that one will be upgraded early next year.

There you have it ... and it was all going so well .... the new chips can only handle 16Gb memory. Terrible shame.
Considering the iPad Pro chomps 4K video without stutter (same can't be said for the old MacBook Pro base model) I don't know that is such a shortcoming. Is this like the days of comparing Power PC to Intel? The Power PC outperformed Intel in its heyday 2-4X with half the specs. Just saying. We see iPads beating the crap out of PC's so I'd imagine.... a new architecture isn't a reason to cry over ram just yet.

But it isn‘t. There‘s a fan in there, suggesting that it’s clocked higher, which means more speed.
No fan but a highly sophisticated thermal transferal system build on the best technology in the wooouurrld as a matter of fact, best in class. Well you might call it just a fan. Amazing. I´m thrilled to be excited

I think the RAM is integrated on the processor, if I am not mistaken. The SSD is exernal - different semiconductor process needed. Putting 16GB RAM on the same chip or coupled to the processor chip in the same package was probably very difficult to do given the size. The close proximatey lowers the capacitive load so you get lower power consumption and lower heat generation. But yes, expansion to 32GB with a M1/PCIe connector would have been nice.

256GB SSD base config and max 16Gb unified RAM , Apple is still Apple . I guess the 256 Gb SSD is what I am most disappointed with. Oh well , back to reality ...

16GB RAM Max on all the new M1 laptops and Mini?
Memory max, yes, but it’s not RAM. It’s unified memory which infers it’s a different technology. Maybe between the massive gains from M1 and the improved unified memory it will more than make up for it?

I'm not at all impressed with the non-upgraded camera and only 2x USB-C ports. I'd figured with all this integration and power efficiency, they had more internal space to slip in a few more ports, not remove existing ones. This design is also looking a little long in the tooth, especially those bezels.

I also hope the M1 chip is clocked differently in the Air, Pro and mini. Else, there's very little difference between them in terms of raw GPU and CPU performance, which is what has historically differentiated these products and their pricing. If baseline CPU and GPU performance is relatively similar across all, Apple could cannibalize sales of the Pro.

Anyone else think it was a weird choice to unveil their chip in the low-end Macs before unveiling it for the MacBook Pro?

Those are the machines that struggle when compared to Windows machines. If you can get a performance-comparable Windows machine for 40% of the price, why would most people buy Apple products?

It doesn’t matter how optimised it is - if you’re working with massive assets then you need memory, and lots of it. 16GB (or even 8) will be fine for most people, but it will be limiting for a lot
And if you are chances of you using a 13” laptop to work with massive assets like that are pretty slim. You need a Mac Pro.

It's interesting to see that Apple does not mention clock speeds on these M1 chips, even in the tech specs portion of the product pages.

Good point. Obviously I would’ve preferred more RAM for a pro machine but something tells me RAM management is going to be incredibly efficient with the Apple Silicon. Let’s see.

Not sure I understand. You have the option to go up to 32GB for the MacBook Pro ($400 extra)

Edit: Nevermind...I was looking at last year’s model underneath.

I was hoping for an updated 16" MBP to replace my mid-2009 MBP. I don't want to drop close to $3k on a computer that's over a year old... but I'm also not really ready to switch to ARM because I have a few Windows-based applications I need for work. I also prefer the larger screen size. I'm desperately in need of a new laptop but not really sure what to do - I'm disappointed in the options here.
