Maxing out the 27" iMac (Nano, i9, 128GB, 8TB SSD, 5700XT) lands just south of $9,000.00 USD. This is your one and only warning that the iMac Pro is getting zero updates, buy it at your own risk.

Apple laid the groundwork for this to be either the final Intel iMac or the next to final update as they will be able to simply drop in a Rocket Lake-S CPU using the same 400-Series PCH that is in this model and leave everything else the same. Whether that happens depends on how well uptake of the AplSi goes over the next year. The inclusion of T2 surprises me, but that simply means that those of us without T2 will probably lose macOS updates sooner than those with T2, but I'm rumormongering without solid evidence.

Obviously, by the lack of any meaningful update to the 21.5" 4K iMac, this is the final version of that model. We will be treated to a 23" AplSi iMac in October for the holiday buying season or Apple will hold it until Q1/2021.

Solid upgrade, if uninspired. Anyone thinking Apple would redesign the iMac before the AplSi switch is picking and choosing their delusions.

Never been a fan of integrated machines. Monitors and cpu guts should be separate.

I tend to agree but.... I went that route with a 2018 Mac Mini and had a lot of headaches with it. First Catalina wasn't ready for release (but was released anyway), the HDMI port has never really worked, I can't run my 32" monitor at 4k because text gets too small, the graphics card is almost nonexistent, no streamed 4k movies over 3rd party monitors, etc. etc.

Whereas my old 27" iMac just worked because Apple controlled everything in the manufacturing process. It's a shame I had to get rid of it but the 2011 tech just wasn't cutting it for me anymore.

This refreshed iMac looks to be superior to my decked out Mini in every aspect except the monitor.

Does it really matter if the bezels are 1 inch or 10 inches? It’s a desktop computer, it’s not like you’re gonna bring it with you in a backpack. On the contrary, large bezels in the iMac allows for more airflow. Because of this the iMac is almost always silent, in contrast to the new MBPs which can’t even drive an external screen without the fans going crazy.

Bezels matter when the iMac isn’t the only display you’re using. I have a second display and it’s just a terrible visual user experience having the giant bezel in between the two screens.

What’s even more nice is staying quiet. If you want something nice just buy a painting with small bezels. I can’t even use Zoom on my 16” MBP when connected to a 4K screen because the fan noise is so damn high.

Cooling accommodations can be made that don’t rely an huge bezels. The iMac tapers to an unnecessarily slim profile behind those very bezels—what’s the benefit of thinness on a device that isn’t portable? Make the case thicker behind the display and suck in those bezels—likely a much more efficient use of that space.

Take the Pro Display XDR as an example—stunning front aesthetics. Turn it on its side and that baby’s chunky. Hear anyone complaining about it? Nope.

The upgrade prices remain pretty nasty.

$400 / £400 to go from i7 to i9
$300 / £300 to go from 5500 XT to 5700 XT (or $500 for 5700XT)
$200 / £200 to go from 512GB to 1TB SSD

The CPU one is particularly harsh, given that Intel's price difference between top i7 to top i9 is only about $100.

Because they have done it in the past...
Perhaps they don't anticipate Apple Silicon Macs driving such massive upgrades on their own that they're trying to combine the redesigns with those launches.

Or perhaps, far, far, far, far more likely, Apple Silicon enables entirely new designs, which are the redesigns they're working on.

Awesome. I see road ahead with better, cheaper MACs when Apple Si based MACs are introduced. No doubt, more users are converting from Windows to MACs and at rapid space and now Apple is making it easier.

Why would they change the outward appearance? It's a beautiful design. It does what it's supposed to do. I'd like more ability to upgrade and repair it easily, but I think we all know a new design wouldn't fix that.
The design could use an update but it matters a lot less than the drama queens here pretend.

Plus, I think it is beat-you-over-the-head obvious that the new design is coming with the first Apple Silicon iMac.
