Apple today announced a new 27-inch iMac with faster 10th-generation Intel Core processor options, next-generation AMD graphics, up to 128GB of RAM, a higher-resolution 1080p front-facing FaceTime camera, a new nano-texture glass display with True Tone support, a T2 chip, higher fidelity speakers, studio-quality microphones, and more.

A breakdown of the new 27-inch iMac's features and specs:
  • 10th-generation Intel Core processors, including up to a 10-core option with a 3.6GHz base clock speed and Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz. The previous-generation iMac used 9th-generation Intel processors with up to eight cores.
  • Next-generation AMD Radeon Pro 5000 series graphics options with up to 55 percent faster performance than the previous generation, according to Apple.
  • Up to 128GB of RAM, compared with up to 64GB with the previous generation.
  • True Tone technology that automatically adjusts the white balance of the iMac display to match the color temperature of the light around you. Apple says this provides a more natural viewing experience.
Starting at $1,799, the new 27-inch iMac is available to order today on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app. It will begin arriving to customers and will be in select Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Resellers starting this week.

The new 27-inch iMac features the same design used since the 2012 model, with a redesigned, Apple Silicon-based iMac expected later this year.

Apple today also made a minor update to the iMac Pro, equipping the base configuration with the 10-core 3.0 GHz Xeon W chip that was previously an upgrade option. In addition, the smaller 21.5-inch iMac now comes standard with SSDs across the line for the first time. Customers can also choose to configure their 21.5-inch iMac with a Fusion Drive.

why isnt the camera 4K? that is a missed opportunity. Maybe the T2 can’t handle it with all of its other background duties, or maybe theyre just too cheap to source the part. A quality 4K webcam is not much to ask from a multi-thousand dollar, premium all-in-one

They simply made the 10-core the default instead of the +1 BTO upgrade. The rest of the box is the same. There won’t be any further updates at this point. The iMac can step in for anyone with 8- or 10-Core needs and now the Mac Pro is your 12-Core and up preferred, at least according to Apple.

Ah yeah, you're right. Hopefully this'll mean the space gray will become an option when the A series iMacs come out. I love this colour but it would be insane to get an iMac Pro just for this.

User Upgradable RAM?

Apple’s reply:

If they chose the final iteration of the Intel iMac to remove the memory access door, that would literally be the cat’s ass.

They haven’t put up a tech support note for the 2020 iMac yet, but when they do, that should clarify it for everyone. I’ll also take my lumps if that ends up being the case.

Why are people still clinging to this? You need really need to save, what, $50? Buying cheap 3d party RAM for your $3000 iMac? Come on people. Just buy what you need. It's an investment for work (supposedly).
Depends on the configuration, but you save $2k+ on 128 GB down to $450 for $32GB. It makes the 27" iMac cheaper than the 21.5" if you need more than 16 GB.

Just found it is user upgradable - thank goodness!

I wasn't expecting a new design, but budget graphics, cheapskate memory and bare minimum SSD seems a bit tight.

Obviously Apple didn't want to release a performance machine because their own Apple Silicon wouldn't be able to compete by 2022, so they concentrated on non-performance updates.
It sounds more like an iPhone update, glass, camera, microphone, T2 chip, speakers etc.

Also, while Apple are so quick to increase prices in the UK when Sterling drops, they haven't adjusted back now that Sterling is stronger.
Hence the UK pays an 8% premium.

Good lord. I had no idea people could be so bothered about an AIO featuring an old design. It’s the last Intel refresh, and it’s got some goodies in there (nano-glass texture should be interesting to see).

Well, I mean product design is one of the ethos of Apple. How an Apple product looks and feels often takes precedence over performance, especially during the Jony Ive era. And this is what, a ten year old design? I get why though - so there would be clear differentiation between this and the new ARM iMacs.

So this might be it: the last-ever Intel Mac. Nothing else really has a “newer” Intel chip available (or soon to be available) vs. what is shipping in all of Apple’s current products. Possibly iMac Pro excepted.
