As expected. A few goodies to tie us over until Apple Silicon. These Intel-based Macs are still a good buy for those who need something now and the next 6-7 years.

Anyone with any marketing experience could have told you this last Intel iMac wasn't going to get an external redesign.

You simply don't waste a major announcement (a redesign) on an old outgoing product. You save it and unveil it for the Apple Silicon iMac.

Why are people still clinging to this? You need really need to save, what, $50? Buying cheap 3d party RAM for your $3000 iMac? Come on people. Just buy what you need. It's an investment for work (supposedly).

Because it is a $600 difference for a 64GB upgrade vs OWC and nearly $2000 difference for 128GB? Like, I could potentially buy an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro with the money saved by upgrading to 128GB myself vs going to Apple...

Still the same tired old design.
No 802.11ax.
Comet lake which is just rehashed Skylake from 2016.
Fusion drive is still an option for some bizarre reason.

At least they finally did something about the webcam and 10GbE.

Fusion is 21.5-inch only and it wasn't updated today.

This should've been last year's model. It should've been Ryzen 3000 (we could've had 12 cores at 65W). It shouldn't be the last x86 iMac. But it is what it is, and this is it folks.
If you want the fastest/best Intel/x86 Mac ever made that wasn't a (i)Mac Pro (and isn't a hackintosh) this will probably be it.

That said, be aware, that 10 core chip is hot and power hungry. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes the 4790K/295X combo in the OG Retina iMac (that would regularly hit 105C and thermal throttle) look cool by comparison.

A serviceable (if low effort and overpriced upgrade) for the end of an era. :/

I’m really contemplating going for the 10-core model with the 16GB 5700XT (which I believe is custom, as that isn’t a normal AMD SKU). Apple will even offer $1300 for my 2017 iMac 5K, which is less than I could get reselling on my own, but also not terrible.

My '08 maxed out 27" was a wonderful machine but 802.11 AC was such an important upgrade (all home use) that I bought a maxed out late 2013 27" and it has rocked until now. (no Big Sur) It has seemed to me that consumer tech reaches plateaus where further upgrades achieve little. So here we are at the time to buy a really nice 27" but is this just below another plateau? No usb-C. No WiFi 6. Same old set of ports. Or are these little tweaks that will not change the overall user experience for the next 5 years. That is my Quandry.

yes, using a monitor that has slim bezels is nice and makes it more enveloping. you don't need to make excuses for apple. Slim bezels improve user experience in a desktop space greatly. This is more than likely the last refresh before apples own chips and the redesign. Pushing out the last of the inventory.

This is debatable at best. Slim bezels do not improve user experience. Good UI and UX on a monitor is better *with* a bezel. Screens without blend into the environment at the edges and conflate the screen presentation. They also have 'edge noise' when not backed by a solid space (think a desk facing into a room or bright storefront). The imaging is competing with the room and potentially light sources.

From an industrial design vantage, many want little or no bezels for aesthetic/tech-wow-factor in terms of the device being the focus. But in function, they lead to less than ideal use.

Flat TVs usually benefit from being mounted to a flat surface and a matte wall background so they can get by. Computer screens do not always follow the same environmental circumstances.

I remember I bought my first iMac in 2005 right before Apple switched to Intel. It worked fine and served me well, but I wish I had waited. Not gonna make that mistake again. I will wait for the switch to Apple ARM iMacs.

Except who will buy an Apple silicon iMac anytime soon that can’t run any essential software, is locked down, or had little dev support? That’s stupid. Either buy an intel Mac or switch to windows are the only real options now.

If it is like the old 2012 model will you be able to add your own ram(the appropriate one) instead of buying from Apple at $$$$?

Laughable "upgrade". Surely many will bite.
People will complain if Apple does not update its specs to industry standards and people will complain if the update is incremental and not "revolutionary".

This was a very predictable update in light of the ARM announcement, and will be welcome by anyone currently looking to purchase an iMac. They get more for less.

What’s even more nice is staying quiet. If you want something nice just buy a painting with small bezels. I can’t even use Zoom on my 16” MBP when connected to a 4K screen because the fan noise is so damn high.

why are you so offended? its like you designed it yourself or something. People have different priorities. I like things to look nice and fresh and "going with the times". Same reason I have not upgraded my 2012 MacBook Pro yet or why I have not bought an Android, i like how the iPhone looks.

People acting like design does not matter when it comes to Apple. Have you all forgotten those product videos at keynotes that are basically "designer porn" in slow motion? Give me a damn break

Would you buy a brand new gasoline car if you were told that all gas stations would be closed within the next few years?

Wait for the electric version...
