While I am somewhat desperate to replace my 16" MBP (which I despise), this update is 'meh'. I will wait for ARM iMac.

Right. "Laughable".

I just priced a "laughable upgrade" for my 2017 5K iMac. I could get 8 cores (instead of 4), same 32 GB memory, same 1 TB storage, for $1000 less than I spent in 2017.

You really you know you're talking about.

You were too smart with your 2015 machine and now again pricing one. Cheers.

Well, no one can buy Apple Silicon iMac soon...it won't be out until late 2020 or early 2021.

So this Intel Mac is ideal. But I think you'll be surprised to see how many and how popular Apple Silicon iMacs (and other Macs) will be if the speed gains are real. Add a whole new form factor with smaller bezels and it will fly off the shelves.
Yep, the more powerful lineup will be the last to move to :apple: silicon. I bet they start with form factors more similar to iPad; small laptops and mac mini.

People will complain if Apple does not update its specs to industry standards and people will complain if the update is incremental and not "revolutionary".

This was a very predictable update in light of the ARM announcement, and will be welcome by anyone currently looking to purchase an iMac. They get more for less.

Of course, you should buy it.

I would rather be cheap and pay less for the bezel-less and high frame rate displays of today than pay more for what AAPL is offering with this iMac refresh...

Nothing worthy of note to point out here.

Why would Apple redesign an Intel iMac when they‘re moving to their own chips. Seems logical they’d save the redesign/wow factor for new Macs with Apple Silicon.

probably because iMac is not going to be an early adopter in this size?

Same embarrassingly dated design? Jikes, even my Dell desktop at work from 4 years ago has less bezel

Yes cuz I have to look at it all day thinking damn this thing looks like an old tube tv

And Apple has been living with Intel not producing promised chips for years as well, and they are going to be releasing their Arm based computers starting next year. The people who either don’t want an Arm based CPU or literally can’t use one because they can’t dual boot Windows may be interested in this computer, but if you can wait at all and you intend to stay with Apple then you’re not buying this anyway. I do think that a lot of people will jump back to Windows because of the end of Mac X86 compatibility. I don’t need a new computer right now, so I don’t care if the design is 11 years old. I will wait and see what the consequences of an Arm iMac will be and decide my future computer based on what limitations and benefits are actually there.

- Agreed with others, major redesign will be saved for ARM macs.

- I expect those iMacs will take design cues from the newer iPads / 2020 iPhones.

- Those bezels need to be reduced by at least half. If Apple can do it with an iPad and fit everything like cameras, sensors, etc in a bezel of that size, they can with an iMac.

Finally a decent GPU option but not available in the base and mid models. At this point it's better to wait for AMD Big Navi anyway just around the corner.

"Apple(R) today announced a major update to its 27-inch iMac(R). By far the most powerful and capable iMac ever"

Epic troll. With the offered base amount of RAM, it can't even handle Kubernetes alone.

I'm not familiar with this 'Kubernetes', is it for email or for web browsing?

Why are people still clinging to this? You need really need to save, what, $50? Buying cheap 3d party RAM for your $3000 iMac? Come on people. Just buy what you need. It's an investment for work (supposedly).
haha come on buddy. it is not a $50 saving. If you're doing real work and need 128GB of RAM, that would be $2600. The OWC price for 128GB? $599. Apple are charging 4.3x more. And OWC RAM is certified to work on Macs.

I often see $300+ up charges for 16GB if RAM for the Lenovo’s I order for work (obviously I just upgrade them myself). This is a standard practice in the industry.

Still the same tired old design.
...

Everyone in forums like this still banging on about the 'tired' design. With the exception of the bezels (which hopefully will be reduced in the re-design) there's nothing tired about it.

It's a CLASSIC piece of product design that will go down in history as such. Most regular consumers still look at the iMac and think 'That's a gorgeous piece of design'. Very few PC designs even today look as good.
