The Memoji engraving is actually not bad - avoids confusion in the family
(Until you hand it over to your kids - then it will increase confusion)

A bit disappointed.

I had lost one of my Airpods Pro. So I was hoping for precision finding on the earbuds on Airpods Pro 2. But it seems that all of the improvements in Find My are on the case but not on the earbuds? That's not at all useful to me then.

I think I'll hold out for a future version that can find the earbuds. Otherwise they're too easy to lose.

Now THESE are an insta buy for me - can't wait for these! The volume controls and adaptive transparancy are super exciting. I also like the lanyard case.

It does say that. But the audio sampling frequency doesn't have anything to do with the codec used to compress it. For instance, opus always output 48khz audio, even when it is a lossy (a very good one, but lossy) codec.

And you can have a PCM encoded file at 12kHz...

On the other hand, I don't really get what's the point in having a lossless codec to use in this kind of earplugs. You want to hear every detail on your music? Then you are probably not going to be walking on a busy street with the ANC enabled (which at the end distorts the audio being played to kill the outside audio), but sitting in your sofa and with some real headphones and as isolated as possible from other noise. I love my AirPods Pro, and will definitely get this 2nd gen, but their objective is not audio purity, it's commodity. And they still sound great. But when I really want to hear as much audio quality I use my Sennheiser headphones, wiht a nice headphone amp, or my Klipsch loudspeakers.

Also: lossless codecs are very power hungry. Have you tried using AirPlay from an iPhone? It eats the battery like crazy. Don't know on the receiving side (some codecs are more complex to encode than decode, or viceversa), but wouldn't bet on it.
I was disappointed that there was no mention of sound quality for a set of earphones. But what you say makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

Totally agree. However it would be great to have one reliable set of headphones that can be useful on the go and on the sofa. :)

The woman presenter was awful. Between the over the top hand gestures and the lack of emotion in her tone I almost couldn't watch the segment. The Pro 2 looks to be a nice upgrade over the previous generation..
Maybe if youre lucky, they will do the same thing with an engineering role.

The entire thing was fake and unwatchable to me

So this is the bit I’m hoping someone will dig into more - just how much this improves sound quality over the first gen

“And Apple also says the AirPods Pro have a new low-distortion audio driver and custom amplifier for “richer bass” and “crystal-clear sound across a wider range of frequencies.””

Would never buy any Apple ear tech and I love Apple. The worst Sennheiser earphones completely obliterated the best Apple has to offer. Anyone who even suggests Sennheiser or Sonly aren’t the best earphone manufacturers I’ll have what you’re smoking

Totally true. What we get with the Apple solutions is the quick-connect convenience, easy device switching, access to features like spatial audio, and a common charging solution with current iPhones. All those are worth something to some people, including myself.

What we absolutely do NOT get is best in class SQ or NR. Not even close.

Even the lowest-end, $99.00 Shure SE215 IEM's blow away anything currently available from Apple for isolation and SQ.

For some situations, like a ZOOM meeting, phone calls while taking walks, or casual podcast listening, I like my APP's for the convenience factor, but when I want to listen to something critically I go to my Shure 848's with AONIC2 modules, or my Sony WF1000XM4 IEM's.

On long flights, I will run the Sony WH1000XM4. NR on the APP's is a joke by comparison.

All I know is, Apple's not getting my money for another pair of these until they replace my defective pair that's about 9 months old and had a battery failure in its charging case!

I took it in to my local Apple store after making a Genius Bar appointment for it, and the lady ran some tests on it. She said, "Oh, it failed the charging test. Definitely defective!" and proceeded to have it sent out to the repair depot for servicing. Depot emailed me to confirm they received them, and the next day? I get email saying they're shipping them back to me with a letter explaining why they didn't repair them.

This is ridiculous! They know they're under warranty. Why didn't the retail store OR the repair depot ship me a replacement pair?!

I thought the same! Her voice seemed unnatural in some way (no intonation, etc.) and at one point I was even wondering if she was some sort of AI/digital creation! (Maybe Apple testing the avatars for their upcoming VR/AR headsets on an unwitting audience??).

Anyhow - I like the look of these, so I'll be ordering on Friday. Shame they didn't have the rumoured health sensors, etc. but hey. I currently use some old Beats X headphones for the gym, so these will be a nice upgrade.

They have it. On the technical specs for the Pro, they say:

Connectivity

  • Bluetooth 5.3 wireless technology
BT 5.3 is on the new Air Pods and the iPhone 14 per the specs in the Apple Store. And weren't LC3 and LE part of the BT 5.2 spec?

This is very interesting. Older iPhones / iPads use BT 5.0 technology. Does that mean one won't be able to enjoy the full benefits of AirPods Pro 2 with these older devices?

I said this in a previous discussion thread but I'll say it here in case anyone else has had the same experience.

I would buy these in a second if Apple said, "They're exactly the same except the grates don't plug up and kill your sound quality so quickly."

I have slightly compromised hearing thanks to a rich life of seeing bands in small clubs. I always thought the 1st gen AirPods Pro had perfectly fine sound quality as new, and I say that as a recovering headphone/iem junkie. I'm always shocked when someone says they sound terrible or at least sub-par.

I figure one of two things. Like many IEMs, sound quality is dependent on a good seal, something I couldn't get out of the stock tips. It took switching to the Comply tips to get the seal I needed. But the big deal is the sound quality noticeably degrades the mesh grill gets dirty. I go from what seems to be to be a rich sound with decent bass to a tinny mess in a week or two at most. At the same time, I notice that I'll fail the fit test no matter how carefully I've inserted them.

I'll then spend a little quality time with a package of BluTak and the difference in sound quality is amazing.

The rest of the announced features are nice, but I'd just like less maintenance. I'll be buying one way or another as my APPs have been in long service now and the battery life is not great any more.

Didn't say lossless audio out loud, so I assume that's a no - which was the only real reason to buy. Guess I'll pass.

Headphone enthusiast here.

I would challenge you to do a blind ABx between lossless and lossy formats using wired gear (since no lossless wireless formats exist thus far).

If you can't consistently tell them apart on wired gear, please stop obsessing about lossless via wireless.

That wasn't my question. I wanted to know if 5.3 is the SAME AS LE or contains LC3 support? I'm specifically wondering about the minimum latency with 5.3 which I literally cant find anywhere.

I came here to know this also. The rumors talked about BT LE, it's not written anywhere. But it seems if it's BT 5.3 then it is included. Waiting to see answers from people who know :D
