Ok, Design looks cool but guess what?

Australians get screwed by the US again

PLastic Fantastic is 200 more
Other models 400 to 600 more

To mirror what a previous poster said
'is it news to apple that there is a global recession?'

I think we are getting screwed over in pricing the most. I am however with the new updates, would have however been more happy to pay $500 less for it!

Pretty disappointed with the pricing. Good luck with continuing to grow your business in these tough economic times with those prices.

i totally agree. Apple will not sale a lot of those machines. I wanted to buy one but an increased in price of an already over-priced product isn't a good strategy!
I'm so mad cause some of my friends wanted to buy a Macbook for school. But now they sure won't!! We all want the backlit keyboard and it's only available for the 2.4. It's just CRAZY!

Just got off the line in the UK to the apple store.
Prices for Higher Education discount

Macbook pro 2.4Ghz £1399.00 with discount £1189.10. Apple care with discount £58.75
Macbook 2.4Ghz £1149.00 with discount £988.18. Apple care with discount £47.00

Thanks for that! Saves me a phonecall:D

Wow, they look nice and I'm sure they're more durable but what did they expect to happen when they took out the FireWire?

They didn't even attempt to replace it with something better?! They go back in time in terms of technology?

Well, I for one think the new Macbooks look great and the features are reasonable. The only showstopper for me was the non-LED backlight display, and since Apple has included that there seem to be no reason for me not to buy.

I've been using a desktop hackintosh up until now and will probably continue to do so, but it'll be nice to use OS X on the road as well.

The features that are important to me are build quality, durability, display, long battery life, and low weight. I couldn't care less about Firewire.

So I guess Apple gained another notebook customer, and I personally doubt they'll lose too mush business on removing the FW port.

It's actually a 0.4 GHz difference. I'm only getting the higher end because you save 100 rather than 50 on the lower end MB with the ed pricing. Plus, I don't have to upgrade the HDD as 250 is sufficient for me standard rather than 160. The backlight is a nice touch when I will use the thing in bed.

Though this will be my first notebook so I don't know how useful the backlight is.

i really don't understand how apple could not have anticipated the backlash this would receive. it seems so very simple to at least offer it as BTO.

For me personally, the decrease in cpu speed is less important considering i'm looking for gpu usage to be the major factor in future operating systems. also, with this size L2 cache, my usage will be fine with dual core 2.0ghz. unfortunately, the uncertainty of the trackpad and the lack of a backlit display on an already overpriced machine might be a deal-breaker.

A black keyboard/silver body and no Firewire....so the "new" Macbooks are a cross between old Titanium G4 PowerBooks and even older Wallstreet G3 PowerBooks?

Apple...thinking different with a mildly retarded brain.

I agree with the point about removing the FW port. I would say that these notebooks are going to still sell like hotcakes as your "average joe" will not need this port. However, they may lose the professional market that need the matte screen and FW port.

I hope you guys realize that inventing a whole new way to build laptops and milling them out of a solid block of aluminum and glass for the display actually costs money. You are paying extra for the durability and the materials.

Too bad Apple didn't provide something else to go along with the case design: FireWire on the Macbook, or alternatively a 13" Macbook Pro. I don't mind paying a little extra but I do want to get the form factor and features I'm looking for.

Actually, the trend with the new camcorders is that USB can transfer video. Especially with the HDD and AVCHD ones.

Joshua.

EDIT: But you pretty much said that. I agree. Prosumer/Pro cameras = FW.

After speaking to some camcorder makers, I learned that high-definition HDD camcorders utilize a recording format called Advanced Video Codec High Definition ( AVCHD )—which neither Final Cut nor iMovie support.

new macbook migration?(without firewire)

sorry if this is a dumb question but in the past ive always done an initial migration from my old mac to my new mac using firewire. maybe stupidly ive just ordered a new macbook but dont know how im supposed to transfer everything in one go as the new macbook doesnt have firewire. i have my music/photos and files on a usb hard drive but if i want to replicate my current macbook pro to the new macbook how do i do this?

sorry if this isnt relevant in this forum.

Overpriced

Apple needs to wake up and build at least one type of laptop that is comparable to what other manufacturers are selling. I like that they're concerned with quality and design, but even Mercedes has a "C" class (and even an "A" class in some parts of the world).
No firewire makes it useless for video-editing. Glossy screen again -- don't know why this keeps cropping up... everyone I know hates it. Otherwise, not a bad offering. It just needs to be a lot cheaper... make a configuration that can be sold for $799 and it will sell like gangbusters!
Of course do that, and the Mac faithful will complain that their current systems will have been unfairly depreciated ;).

Both new Macbooks come with backlit keyboard standard.

only the 2.4 GHz macbook comes with an illuminated keyboard

i dont really like the new design at all. i think its kind of ugly to be honest. i dont like the black border around the screen. i see what they were trying to do, but just aluminum would have been fine.

Man, I needed to sign up just to say how pissed off I am right now with Apple. I've been planning on getting a new Macbook Pro and figured I'd be better off waiting for the new Macbook Pros to come out. However, as it now turns out Apple just now raised the price of the Macbook Pro by about £200.

And for what!? Is there some massive increase in speed or any such thing. Nope nothing really; just a better graphics card (I assume for the 7 people in the world who play games or use 3D software on a macbook) and another 50gb of harddrive space (which was only £30 before). So I'm now being forced to pay another £200 for essentially what is about the same machine.

My only hope is that if I act fast I can track down a current version Macbook Pro for the cheaper price from somewhere else. Apple well and truly screwed this one up.
