I did a google search and found This. Anyone know if it works as a true firewire replacement?

Read the description. This is for a network cable tester. Even if it were a converter, that would show you the true elegance of Apple hardware.

The UK Apple site AND Apple store both say different. (Screenshots: UK Apple site, UK Apple Store - MacBook 2.0GHz, and UK Apple Store - MacBook 2.4GHz)

Not sure which is the typo. The US store still shows the 2.0 as backlit keyboard.

I keep refreshing the order page and each time it shows this :

Am I insane, or is Apple selling a seven-or-so month old MacBook that is actually faster than a brand new one, for three hundred dollars less?

Hate to break it to Apple, but that is absolutely ridiculous.

Certainly isn't gonna be faster when you factor in the better chipset, faster RAM and 500% better GPU.

For those of you lamenting the loss of FW on the MacBook line, how about an Express card to FW adaptor? Would that work for you?

Some help?

So on the 15" what is the difference in the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB of GDDR3 memory for the earlier 15" and the new standard 15" the integrated NVDIA GeForce 9400M processor?

Would love to hear what folks can distinguish?

(Other than the chart at Apple's website showing 1.5 fast game speed.)

"And the back lit keyboard is part of the 2.0 model."

Regarding the Apple Macbook specs page showing Backlit on 2.0 only:
"Yes it is an error."

That is from the Apple Chat.

"We have reported this issue and the web site will be changed very soon."

My thoughts?

I feel a lot better about buying mine in july esp since the only thing they really added was
1. backlit Which im glad i dont have because i like the normal keyboard.
2. AL-Which I think will be dinged up like crazy.

So I am very happy with my current MB and to those who do not like the new ones go to the clearance dep or buy a referb.

For those of you lamenting the loss of FW on the MacBook line, how about an Express card to FW adaptor? Would that work for you?

And how would that help given the original and continued lameness of the Macbook lacking ExpressCard?

For all of those concerned about the "drop" in processor speed, it's not what you think. They are using DDR3, a faster bus, and more processor cache. In the end, the computer will be faster, more responsive, and more efficient then the current Macbook.

i love how steve didn't even mention the entry level 2.0ghz being slower for more money. he wants people with cursory knowledge of computers to splurge for the extra 0.4ghz. but yeah, ddr3 and the bus should make up the difference. plus snow leopard will be using OpenCL which makes the GPU speed more important (not just graphic usage anymore).

I like the new design, my only minor gripe is that the bezel is a little thick for my taste, but still a sexy machine. I'm trying to figure out which configuration would be best for my needs - the heaviest thing I'm likely to be doing is editing RAW files in Lightroom, and some light Photoshop work. Anyone know if I'd see a noticable difference in this between the 2.4 and 2.0 if all the other specs were identical? And are there any other differences between the two that I'm missing other than the processor speed & backlit keyboard?

I can't really justify $400+ more for what little more the pro offers and I don't really want to buy a previous gen pro because of the whole faulty GPU thing.

Any other recommendations? I'm pretty open minded here.

Echoing untold others here... lack of FireWire is a serious misstep. I have two external drives, a DV bridge, and a camcorder that rely on FireWire exclusively. I guess this means I'll be sticking with my 1st gen Intel iMac a while longer.

Wasn't the IEEE1394 consortium working on a reimplementation of FireWire 800 that would rival eSATA speeds? It's so strange to see Apple abandon one of it's most iconic, and reliable, innovations.

Firewire 3200 is either out confirmed or is close to it. eSATA should be 3Gbps, and FW 3200 would be 3.2Gbps, so a bit faster. I believe FW 3200 would use the same FW 800 style port.

So no comments on whether or not this would work? I'd really like to get a MacBook but FireWire (400 at full speed) is a must. Obviously no-one has used this adaptor with the MacBook, but maybe with another notebook?

No, I don't think so. Read the specs on the manufacturer's page:

http://trendnet.com/products/proddetail.asp?prod=125_TC-NTUF&cat=50

This is a USB-Firewire adapter for their TC-NT2 product. TC-NT2 is a "Network Cable Tester with Tone Generator for UTP, STP, Coaxial, and Modular Cables".

I doubt it would work in the way you're wanting it to work...

It's not a reimplementation. FW800 was designed from the get-go to for an upgrade to 3200 speed. Products should be coming out anytime now, about a year before USB 3.0 is finished.

Gotcha. Yeah, I would seriously consider putting the iMac on the auction block were it not for the lack of FireWire. Here's hoping the 3200 spec gets some products soon so Apple can realize the error of its ways. The FW800 port (which will be the same for 3200) needs to be the new lingua franca port on all Macs, just like FW400 used to be.

New Macbooks

The Good
~Beautiful Casing
~Powerful GPU's
~2GB standard RAM

The Bad
~ NO FIREWIRE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
~ Glossy Screen
~ Insane pricing. ($1,300.00?!?)

The Verdict

No Deal. Going to wait for Snow Leopard.

And Apple will sell loads of these...

So what were the advantages of the MacBook Pro? Faster graphics, metal instead of plastic case, backlit keyboard. And what does the new MacBook have? Faster graphics, metal instead of plastic case, backlit keyboard.

Apple has been very cleverly creating an upgrade path. Starting with the white MacBook (which is now under $1000, and the dreaded Combo drive is gone), there is an upgrade path where for just $300 more you get an all metal case, a fast graphics card, multi-touch keypad, and then for just $300 more you get a faster CPU, bigger hard drive, backlit keyboard, and then for another $500 you get a MacBook Pro. That is how you sell computers: Get them in the shop, show them the cheapest model, then show them how they get a lot better for only a little more.

Just noticed: The new MacBooks support 2560 x 1600 pixel monitors (30 inch monitors).

2.0 vs 2.4 GHz AND no firewire?!?!
Looool I'm buying a dell!
Is your new Dell going to have FireWire then? Which graphics comes with that new Dell you're going to buy? Which operating system as well by the way? I look forward to reading the answers of these questions.
The 2 tone doesn't work for me-I'll stick with the all black case any day. The black bezel (and keyboard) look completely forced and out of place. I liked the idea of the aluminum wrist-rest with a black lid. Also, at least my black MacBook has firewire!
It sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that the old black MacBook looks better. It's not working with me though. The new aluminium and black is much, much, much better looking.
In my opinion we are getting way screwed... Seriously what the hell? I'm thinking that this first batch of macbooks are basically like those who first bought the iPhone, and a few months after, massive rebate (or was that the touch? anyways).
But you listed more positives than negatives though, so how can you say that we're getting screwed? That doesn't make any sense. Now if you listed more negatives than positives, then that would make sense, but you didn't. You also didn't mention the backlit display and keyboard as a positive for the new MacBook. These new MacBooks are not perfect for two reasons that people have mentioned such as the lack of FireWire and the 2.0 GHz processor at the low end, but they still appear to be the best portable that Apple has ever produced. I'm sure that the front side bus, and the graphics improvement would make the new 2.0 GHz overall faster than the older 2.4 GHz.

Read the description. This is for a network cable tester. Even if it were a converter, that would show you the true elegance of Apple hardware.

Damn. Wasn't very clear as I didn't know that TC-NT2 was a model of cable tester. *Sigh* looks like MacBook Pro it is. :(

A perfect update for what I wanted

Already ordered the 1599 model.

Back-lit keyboard, LED screen, 2.4 ghz, 250gb HD, Superdrive.

Perfect machine for me. Could have done with it being a little cheaper but I can live with it.

My thoughts:

- I like the looks, I don't mind the two tone at all
- I have a problem with the fact that MB and MBP look virtually identical
- No Firewire no big deal to me but I can see why people are very upset
- I HATE the CAPS LOCK delay that's now standard on all mac laptops
- I thought previous Build Quality on plastic Macbooks was poor so hopefully these new ones are better
- The specs seem barely changed over a long period of time. I bought a 2ghz Macbook over 2 years ago. Would a 2ghz C2D by that much of an improvement??
- Jury is out on the trackpad until I use it but Apple have the 'less is more' obsession and that never worked with their mice so don't see why it should with the trackpad.
- Moving to display port is great but doesn't seem to Apple are doing it gradually. It's like BOOM, display port, what's DVI?
- The specs of the most expensive macbook and cheapest macbook pro are virtually identical. The decision of which to buy seem to boil down to screen size.

Just got off the line in the UK to the apple store.
