Apple Remote

Guess it is only for iPod Docks and Apple TV's

One of which has to be an expensive new generation Apple Cinema Display for the foreseeable future.

Check monoprice.com .... there are adapters out there and more will be coming in the future now that the miniDisplayPort spec is open.

As I said "no too bad"... considering how overpriced apple ram has been in the past... it's only about 2X over priced now. Thats progress! Seriously, it does save one from having to crack open the little beastie...

Hear hear... when DDR3 first came out Apple's prices were actually cheaper than OWC... but now the gap is beginning to reappear. It might be worth the extra cost not to open up the mini.

Any guess if the mini display port will carry multichannel audio? The display spec shows that it's capable of it however it's not enabled on the macbook and macbook pros.
Just curious if it is on the new imac and mini. I guess we won't know until they start shipping.

So far the miniDisplayPort does not carry audio, though it is technically capable of doing so. In the meantime, just use the optical connection in the headphone port. A miniToslink->Toslink cable costs ~$4 from monoprice or someplace similar.

I love Apple, but again, not that much. Remember, Apple was only a $100 million loan from MS away from being bankrupt.

No they weren't. They had 6 billion dollars in the bank at the time. The $100 million was for Apple to bury it's patent claims against MS.

Edit: But the pricing/config of the new machines still sucks :)

Apple are just so greedy!
atleast the new iMac has a new stand!

Fortuneatly for both of our opinions, we have to wait and see.

As for the underlined, that really depends on who your target customers are.

Certainly.

However, I would argue that while both the target areas of being trendy (i.e. "macs are cool") and being loyal ("buy a Mac no matter what") are two significant contributers to Apple's success, those target areas will decrease in size during the recession, as people are forced, due to monetary reasons, to give up their higher-cost preferences in favor of surviving a recession.

since last april i've been somewhat regretting purchasing the iMac when it came out since i had to return it 3 times because of screen issues (gradient, color inconsistencies, bleed) and though it would have been better to wait for the new iMac because most of those problems would probably be addressed with new LED panels... i had my screen replaced by applecare tech a few months ago, and i can already see the new one starting to deteriorate also (forming strange lines, ghosting, burn in, and the bleed is horrible).

well, i'm very surprised that apple didn't switch to LED panels for this new update, and i assume the new panels are just as prone to the problems that the other aluminum based iMacs have been seeing for years.

i for one would be interested to know if the new panels are still a problem. fingers crossed that they updated the panels so when i have to call applecare again i'll finally receive the panel that i (over)paid for.

The 20" iMac features a downgrade in graphics card power, and increased price. The 24" iMacs are cheaper, sure, but basically no upgrade.

The Mac Mini is a fairly lackluster upgrade that is priced $100-$200 too much, IMO.

There is also no solution for someone like me, who has an excellent 24" external monitor, but can find no Mac desktop with a decent graphics card that has no display. The Mac Mini would be attractive, if it had better graphics , at least as an option. But you can't drive a 24" display at full resolution with integrated graphics, even on a movie, let alone gaming.

And finally, in regard to price. I will probably end up purchasing a Windows 7 performance laptop for $1700 that will easily beat the high-end iMac in value and specs, as well as quality. It'll also be portable. The fact that there is no midrange Apple desktop is pathetic. The laptop I'm looking at is more upgradeable than the iMac (you can replace the processor, HDD, optical drive, etc.). You can also get a new machine and keep the old display.

Apple fails on value, performance, and upgradeability. But it doesn't matter, because it's got an Apple logo on it, right?

i couldn't agree more.

My Macbook that has Intel GMA950 integrated graphics can play 1080p video perfectly fine hooked up to a 24" 1920x1200 LCD.

Got a GMA 950 here. It lags pretty bad on higher-res movies. How many FPS do you get? For example, my Dad notices the lag when watching movies on my screen, more so than my Mom.

Certainly.

I don't think those two ideologies are demographics.....

Then again I don't take marketing and we could just be having a semantic spat here.:)

Apple got greedy

- no firewire in most macbooks
- charging for remotes
- charging extra for a numeric keypad
- cutting down the number of firewire ports
- using last year's mid-range components (graphics cards and processors)
- charging more for RAM
- lengthening product cycles

A deliberate strategy of driving down costs by using inferior components to increase their margin.

But they haven't been paying attention to the competition. They really haven't. Forget about the exchange rate. If you go to a PC World, their imacs will now be the worst value for money of any computer there. They'll stand out for it. UK definitely. US I don't know but wouldn't be surprised.

They did this before when Jobs wasn't CEO - completely lost their way
There was a share option scandal at Apple a few years back. I suspect many executives there are just as short-term profit-focussed and greedy as the bankers. Sacrificing customer loyalty for short-term margin is terrible business strategy but it might line the pockets of a few execs quite nicely. I wouldn't be surprised to see sales fall off a cliff and the computer division close down in a couple of years.

Certain machines can play 1080p fine, but at lower bit rates. Higher bit rates the machine may start to stutter (like bit rates approaching Blu-ray format).

Online 1080p downloads have lower bit rates as to make the files smaller for downloading.

Snow knocked out my internet just got back on after two days....

Updates were a nice surprise. I have spent I don't know how long reading all these post about how overpriced Macs are. More so than ever considering the economy.

Well, this is how I feel .... it's there company, they can do what they want. If you don't like how they do it then don't buy their product.

Don't like "life without walls" then crack open a book and create the next big thing in computers then remember not to charge us for it. When you do I'll buy 2.

***Note to apple***
I like your stuff, I buy lots of it. You screwed me on my iPhone it's ok I forgive you. Yet, I still buy your products. 24 iMac, BlackBook, 60 ipod, airport extreme, 2 oh i mean 3 iPhone 3G's.(not a bad profit from a switcher less than 2 yrs ago)

No Blue ray in mini...no deal... I was willing to pay high price for under the tv machine... so when you do that I will buy one.;)

Not a strong way to start off your post, seeing as only one macbook DOESNT have firewire...

Edit: And from Apple's own website Ive seen the numeric keyboard is a FREE option.

Where are you getting your facts?

Well you know me, im a stickler for specifics/correct labelling :p

Performance testing done with 2.26GHz Mac minis

About the Mac mini update (which I like, and am thinking of buying one despite the hefty price tag of 799€ (== 1,003 USD) for the better model)...

Can anyone explain this footnote to the "Up to 5x faster NVIDIA graphics performance" claim in Apple Store?

Testing conducted by Apple in December 2008 using preproduction 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-based Mac mini units with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics; all other systems were production units. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of Mac mini.

Tested with 2.26GHz Mac minis... but the ones being sold are just 2.0GHz? Hmm, did I miss something? Or is this CPU speed difference irrelevant when looking at graphics performance?

Edit: Ah, I didn't notice you can get optionally get a 2.26GHz CPU (if you pay 150€ more)

All I can say is that I'm impressed that the rumours of the Mac Mini were actually true. I will admit that I thought the rumoured Mac Mini was a mockup, but now knowing that it is what it is, I'm looking forward to picking one up in the future.

Still working pretty darn well for them (Apple). Increasing market share and profits/revenue... they must be doing something right.

That said, I wonder for how long. Because there is no 'official' competition, they are able to charge what they like. Although I don't mind paying a premium for their products - the line ups today are kinda OTT.

I would definitely say Apple's current strategy is cost-cutting, while incrementally increasing prices. Call that "greedy" if you like, it's just called making a profit. It's up to consumers to decide to buy Apple. I, for one, am straying away from Apple due to the cost-cutting (and thus lower specs).

Certain machines can play 1080p fine, but at lower bit rates. Higher bit rates the machine may start to stutter (like bit rates approaching Blu-ray format).

Ah, this makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

The numeric keyboard isn't extra.
All companies charge more for RAM
NO other computers have firewire 400.

I love Apple, but again, not that much. Remember, Apple was only a $100 million loan from MS away from being bankrupt. Don't assume it can't happen again if they continue to piss off its loyal customers.

Oh boy here we go again, Microsoft saved Apple blah blah blah. So many years ago. The way I see it Apple has pledged a huge contribution to the computer industry helping PC companies sell more computers with Windows. How so? The iPod and iTunes. The world has bought more computers to keep up with the latest electronics. Had we left the industry to Microsoft we would be still doing boring spreadsheets.
Apple's innovation has caused other companies to step up their game in features and style.

Get over yourself, Apple is too big of a company where they have to be concerned if they lose a few customers.

Could anyone tell me if I purchase the new iMac baseline version of the 24' iMac, would it perfectly run games such as Counter Strike: Source, Diablo III, Starcraft II (When they come out) and other such games?
:D
