The two low end iMacs:

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory

The price went up and the computer got downgraded. What the **** is this???

Wow good catch. This is some serious bulls--t. Shared memory in the iMac. Come on Apple.

Ugh, and a 9400M. AND it's more expensive.

Read a few things about this on the mac mini, couldn't find a definite answer.

The low end has 128mb shared while the other has 256mb. Does upgrading the RAM on the low end one increase the shared memory on the GPU?

In this thread people seem to see it as a downgrade from the previous model. I just wanted to make sure it would be okay with the larger display. Glad to know I should be fine!

Its a downgrade from a certain card (which apparantly was on the higher up iMac) but it will EASILY meet your needs.

I seriously underestimated the power of the 9400M

Same Poor Design on the iMac

Despite numerous pleadings via Apple Feedback, Apple continued the bad design of combining analog and Toslink audio out. So what if you want both? Do they offer a splitter so we can use headphones, yet also use our Toslink for audio? NO NO NO!!!! Idiot :apple:

Yes, Apple is using the same basic platform for the entry 20/24 iMacs, MacBooks, MBPs, and Minis. The 9400M on all of those use shared memory. The 9400 series does, however, get put on budget discrete cards, so there's a bona fide full-featured GPU in there (much more than the previous offerings from Intel). Stay calm and wait for the real world benchmarks. I'll be just as miffed if these things don't perform.

What the hell? How many people out there do you really think fall into the same situation as you? The iMac is a CONSUMER product, I dont even know what you are talking about, why would joe-needs-a-computer?

Its like some people think restructuring a product line for something 1% of users will care about is GOOD business sense!

He has a valid complaint. Several people in the music industry are using iMacs... I'm guessing because they don't want a big ugly metal box sitting in their office. That, or the $3000 in savings...

Thats a problem.

Anyway, as far as APPLE is concerned (again APPLE, not me) the iMac is the CONSUMER computer, not the professional computer.

Been waiting a while to upgrade to a mid range iMac with a dedicated graphics card and decent screen. But not for £1500. Just not prepared to part with that kind of money in this economic climate. Way overpriced, lousy exchange rate or not, for what is a very modest upgrade. Would have considered a mac mini but once you spec it up I'd be paying £700 pounds for what is a bottom of the range machine and no monitor. Just how dumb do Apple take me for? Quite happy to sit this one out...

Could someone tell me if it's worth upgrading from GeForce GT 130 to the ATI Radeon HD ?? Im planning on using my new iMac for gaming, photo editing, video editing and web designing. Any suggestions?

What the F***!!!! Apple ... are you guys taking the P***!!!

£1899 ($2,734) for a 3GHz dual core machine, or £1,200 for an entry level machine that doesn’t even offer the option of improving the graphics card.

This is surely Apples way of saying goodbye to the desktop market ... I honestly cannot believe the cheek of it! Words fail me ... I've been waiting for an update for nearly a year and this is what you give us?

Before you fanboys start moaning, lets just see what £1,799 buys me from Dell ... ready ...

XPS
Quad Core i7 2.93GHz 8mb Cache 1333MHz FSB
24" Display
8GB RAM
1.5TB Drive
512MB ATI Radeon 4850 (extra £40 option to add to the Apples £1,799!)
Blueray player
... with about £100 change.

Ok ok, we all love OSX ... but Im sorry, I'd rather take a poor handling Ferrari for a drive than a well balanced Hyundai!

Apple ... congratulations for alienating your entire desktop base and for giving your credibility as innovators a firm kick in the teeth!

I’m off to buy the Dell (minus £270 as I already have a 24") and for the massive saving AND substantial increase in spec, I'll live without OSX (until I can Hackintosh that is!)

Can't say I blame you dude. Apple is really getting out of hand here. I mean their prices have always been a little on the "premium" side, but this...I mean it just feels like they're TRYING to push Mac users like ourselves away. This new iMac is a joke. Only hardcore Apple fans would think any hardware shown today was good.

In the European socialist paradise, including New "Labour" Britain, the gap between the rich and the poor is wider than ever. If you can't afford these prices, you're not on the side Apple's trying to target. Sorry.

*we* can afford them, we just don't like being nickel and dimed.

I'm satisfied. i was going to buy a 2.4 Ghz 20" imac but now i guess i'm getting 1 more gig ram, better vid card, faster processor, and 70 more HD gigs.

please do not compare the Imac with a Mac Pro :p

I've your in the music industry you want more monitors, more pci-e slots, more, more and more options

the Imac would be in the livingroom

 The price to double your RAM from Apple...$1,000!!! Apple REALLY sucks when it comes to the price of RAM!!! I'll stick to my current 4 GB RAM/1 terabyte HD/24 inch iMac!!

The only iMac change with this upgrade is more RAM by default.

Yeah. The record sales of Macs over the past few quarters are obviously a sign of imminent collapse.

I can see the headlines now.

"Apple files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Dropping of the Firewire 400 port blamed."

Some people seem to operate in some weird parallel universe.

Past sales are no guarantee of future performance.

It's not simply Apple going for a high cost low quality 'design' strategy. It's doing it in the teeth of a Depression. We'll be 3-4 years into that in a couple of years. I think the World will be a different place. A 'design' strategy wont cut it in that world

Apple wont want to go low cost so computers will get neglected as we're seeing now. Apple will still be around (from the iPhone/ iPod/ CE) but the computer stuff gone (or sold off).

The other thing is look at how car sales fell off a cliff. We are about to see a massive wave of credit card defaults. And I'm guessing many people are used to buying their computers on credit. That will become much more difficult. So sales of the higher priced stuff will plunge.

Apple built up a great brand reputation (certainly in my head) for high quality high spec consumer computers. But they're blowing that reputation and it will be hard to get back once it's lost. Last time it needed a healthy Steve Jobs to turn it around

This is what I see - maybe you're right. This is a parallel universe :D

For everyone complaining about the UK prices, one simple answer - the exchange rate. We've got rather used to £1=$2. But now at £1=$1.40, things aren't too great.

At that rate a $599 Mac Mini = £428. Then add 15% VAT, and you get £492... only £7 less than they are selling for.

So, don't blame Apple this time. My own cynical opinion is that the government is letting the £ go artificially low to help exports and discourage imports.

care to explain the prices on the old models seeing as again the same models are available but in the uk the price got bumped 26% and in the US it stayed the same.

did the currency go down 26% overnight or what??

maybe i'm mistaken, but when i got my octo core around a year ago, i swear it cost me £2500 AFTER i upgraded the hard drive and ram (from elsewhere obviously)... now its that much for the base octo model.. something isn't right... and weren't Mac Minis £400?

surely the UK pricing has messed up, this surely can't be right.

Apart from people thinking Macs only open special versions of everything, and won't operate Microsoft Office, the main thing that puts them off is the price.. i can defend a 10-20% price difference, "macs pay for themselves in many other ways" etc.. but i don't know if i could recommend the entry level models, before they were underspecced, now the specs are better (still not mind blowing) and the things cost more?!!!!

i know its been mentioned, but this is surely the wrong time for Apple (at least in the UK) to be charging this much.. they are on the cusp of taking a significant market share of the PC market, surely they don't want to mess that up!!

2009 worldwide forecast...

Computers shipped 260 million.

Apple computers shipped 13 million.

marketshare worldwide.... 5%.

they are on the cusp of nothing. ;)

"MacMini: Welcome to 2004!" -Digg.com from today.

I'm impressed as to how much they updated today. In fact, the TC/AE is impressive: I'm always switching my AEBS back and forth to 5 and 2.4 GHz. I turn it up to 5 when I need to transfer files but then I need to turn it back down otherwise my PC and iPhone won't work. Kinda dumb to go buy a 200$ router because of this problem though...

Also, i don't think the new iMac is enough to make me sell my white 24" iMac which is somehow feeling ancient compared to these new models. The grand-daddy iMac looks great!
