I'm glad the new iMacs have finally been updated and released! My long wait is finally over. :D I'm dissapointed there is no Quad-core models, but am pleased to see that the model iMac I want is over $100 cheaper. Just need to wait for my tax refund, and that Mac is mine. :D

Yes, Apple is using the same basic platform for the entry 20/24 iMacs, MacBooks, MBPs, and Minis. The 9400M on all of those use shared memory. The 9400 series does, however, get put on budget discrete cards, so there's a bona fide full-featured GPU in there (much more than the previous offerings from Intel). Stay calm and wait for the real world benchmarks. I'll be just as miffed if these things don't perform.

I don't care how awesome they are, they're still sharing memory. How hard is it to dedicate a 512MB chip to a GPU?

To everyone complaining about the new prices, exchange rates, etc.

Apple always "corrects" the price of their computers when they launch new models/upgrades. That's why you are seeing new prices compared to yesterday.

Example for us Canadians: the low-end Mac mini was and is still 599$US AFAIK. However, yesterday it was 649$CAD and today it's 729$CAD. That may be a 80$CAD price increase, but if we had to go with today's exchange rate it would be 775$CAD, not 729$CAD.

Also, I believe prices in some countries are shown with taxes included, while they're not included in other places (such as the U.S.A. and Canada).

On another note: FW800, 9400M, up to 4GB on the new Mac mini. W00t! :D

edit: you can connect FireWire 400 devices into a FireWire 800 port using the right cable. The Mac mini didn't lose FW400 compatibility...

Apple built up a great brand reputation (certainly in my head) for high quality high spec consumer computers. But they're blowing that reputation and it will be hard to get back once it's lost. Last time it needed a healthy Steve Jobs to turn it around

This is what I see - maybe you're right. This is a parallel universe :D

Rubbish.

Macs have been "quality" but never been high spec. People have been complaining about graphics cards used for as long as I can remember. People have been complaining about the lack of Blu-ray, the expensive RAM, if you want to go further back - dropping the floppy disk on the original iMac, crap undeveloped Power PC processors, insufficient memory on the original Macintosh, it has gone on and on and on...it has never changed.

But you know what Stix. That has never mattered. It matters to people on this board because we are the 1% who get fill a forum with swear words if specs don't meet our incredibly high standards. Those specs will never meet our incredibly high standards but they'll do just fine for the other 99% of the market who want a well built, good looking computer with software that works properly they can surf the web with and do cool stuff with to impress their friends. They couldn't give a damn about specs. They don't even understand specs.

These are the people that love Apple and will continue to give them billions. Not the geeks on a forum that go into meltdown over what graphics card Apple has chosen.

To claim that Apple low spec policy will lead them to doom is not only insane, but ignoring what Apple has done for the past quarter of a century anyway.

Whilst I hate the UK price I'm thinking that.....

Superdrive, 40gb more HDD, better Chipset (inc DDR3 memory, faster bus and NVIDIA Graphics), FireWire800 and 5 USB ports.

....is probably worth £100 extra. The top end mini is just stupid tbh I can update the memory to 2gb for £13 (crucial) and the hdd for another £50 so why do Apple charge £150 (or $200) for that?

If any of the new Mini's sell I guess it'll be the cheap one. It certainly offers better value.

I did expect the price to bump in line/parity with the US. Afterall it's the same excuse Canon/Nikon are using at present :(

Will look forward to a price reduction once the pound gets off it's sick bed (yeah right :p)

I ought to thank Apple really because they're probably going to do me a favour. I was thinking of buying a high end iMac prior to the update which I could scarcely afford then so there's no question about whether I can afford the new high end iMac. Probably a good idea to sit this one out considering the current climate.

Of course I'm terribly gutted. After having a history of buying Mac hardware only for it to be upgraded a few weeks after I bought it and getting vastly improved, I thought I was playing this one wisely by putting off buying back in September.

Apple must realise how poor their UK pricing is though. Go to Apple.com and the huge iMac banner proudly proclaims how it starts at $1,499. Go to Apple.com/uk and the same banner strangely lacks any boasts about price. I suppose they're just hoping everyone will forget the old prices.

What the hell? How many people out there do you really think fall into the same situation as you?

OK, so what are you saying? I should buy a Mac Pro just so I don't have to plug and unplug my headphone jack? If I represent only 1%, then why do they even put a Toslink at all? And now really, NT, how much trouble would it be to create a splitter that both I and that measly 1% could buy for $30 that would split the optical from the analog?

I am not a professional. I use my iMac to watch movies in my home theater. But when I need to work on my video editing, I have to unplug the Toslink, and plug in headphones.

Now admit it. That 1% figure is right off the top of your head isn't it?

You know whats hilarious? That the 24' imac has the exact same video card as that in the cheapest, entry-level plastic macbook.

Go Apple.

please do not compare the Imac with a Mac Pro :p
I've your in the music industry you want more monitors, more pci-e slots, more, more and more options

What options would those be? Most don't need PCI slots. MIDI interfaces are USB. Audio interfaces use FIREWIRE, yet another reason the lack of firewire 400 is so disturbing.

Not saying the Mac Pro isn't a better machine, but it can be overkill for a small studio.

Honestly, I've always thought it was quite stupid the way Apple sees fit to arbitrarily divide their machines into pro/consumer categories. They should release a wide range of machines at different price points, and let the customers choose which features they want... no need to intentionally cripple the "consumer" models.

Is the new low-end iMac really the same price as the old low-end one in the US? Because I just checked the Australian store, and we're expected to pay $2000 for it, when the old one was only $1600.

Isn't Dell getting sued for false advertising?

If it were easy to hackintosh I might just be all over it.

At least Dell support comes to your house.

I read somewhere that Dell was telling customers they'd come to your house, and never did, all the assistance was by phone. I just gave up my Dell pc for a 20" iMac, and I couldn't be happier. I'm going to take that old Dell and blow it up out back! lol...

Again, that would mean that every refresh whould be more expensive than last, ad infinitum.

You're comparing 2007 specs with 2009 ones.

Yah, it's the same price...

That's why I'm bummed, cuz I just paid $1,200.00 for the same thing only the new one is upgraded! :(

Where did I say you should buy a Mac Pro? Yes the 1% is an off the cuff guess, but my reasoning behind my statement still stands. Why would apple put money into something that the vast majority of users won't use or care about? This is talking from a business perspective, not my own.

Also, you know apple hates having to pay for licenses when they dont have to.

You sorta make a point but on the other hand your sorta don't.
Yes, it would be great for Apple to make more models for choice however companies end up with tons of backup inventory on stuff that wasn't bought. Honestly I think Apple does it the right way in order to stay in business.
It's like going to a smorgasbord with 50 varieties and most people choose only 5, everything else ends up in the surplus can.
It's not good business to cater to every customer's wants.

No, you got pawned by marketing. Find those benchmarks at the iMac 24" native resolution of 1920x1200.

Normally stick up for Apple's prices in the face of the whiners but a 25% increase on the base Mini and a £200 increase on the base iMac - despite going backwards with integrated graphics - is obscene.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say they are mocking us.

Usa

The reason we don't is because of people with your attitude that somehow think your country is better than everyone else's.

Yes, we sure do.

Though, I am a bit disappointed by this update. I was expecting either a little more power or a little price drop. Eh. I dunno. No LED backlight? Might just have to go refurb. I mean, how on earth can I recommend the Mini to my Mom? She says she doesn't want to "learn" OSX and this burp of an update won't help.

But you know, in an economy like this refurb won't kill anyone, all my macs so far have been used, at least this new one will be somewhat new (if I decide on refurb/ebay)- not like the 3 to 5 year stuff I'm used to. Bottom line though is I don't see how anyone can go back to PC. Every time I talk to my PC friends they are having "issues" with their systems. I don't give a rat's ass how great 7 is, in a decade of Mac use I've had Zero problems. That does something for me. Something I am willing to pay a little extra for.
