How? Its how many many many businesses do, well, business. There is ALWAYS going to be different tiers with different price ranges. The label is just that , a label.

Different tiers is fine.

But Apple has, for some time now, felt the need to intentionally cripple their "consumer" machines so they don't compete with the pro ones.

IMO, every machine in Apple's line should have user serviceable RAM, hard drive, and Video Card.

And it is absolutely ridiculous that you can't spend a little more and order a macbook with a real graphics card, or order a reasonably priced "Pro" tower with a "consumer" processor.

Apple may not be able to please everyone, but with a little more flexibility in their line, they could please a whole heck of a lot more people than they are pleasing now.

Just a question, that new MacMini video card. Would it run Halflife 2 in boot camp? (I don't really care much about PC gaming, just HL2 is the only thing I miss from my PC days - and I don't want to buy an Xbox360 to run it)

"there is proof..."

My bad..thanks for the info

Keep in mind that this dimension was a super high end consumer machine at the time and most people wouldn't opt for 1 GB ram...but still...Apple should be doing better than this. 2 GB on the mini should be standard, like it is on every PC at best buy. For the iMacs, I think 2 GB is fine, too, except for the high end 24" should have 4 GB. The Mac Pro should come with 4 GB standard, at that price.

Now, the new mac pro...can it run Crysis is what I want to know :p

I agree....

Before anyone jumps off a bridge...

... here is a quick and dirty comparison of the old and new graphic cards in the iMacs. Disclaimer: the closest I could find to the GeForce GT120 was its predecessor, the 9500GT, which was apparently recently rebranded as the GT120.

Old GPU:3DMark,New GPU:3DMark,% Increase

Radeon 240: 144, GeForce 9400M: 439, 204.86%
Radeon 2600Pro: 630, GeForce GT120: 1222, 93.97%
GeForce 8800GS: 3614, Radeon 4850: 6830, 88.99%

These are independent scores from futuremark.com.

Keep in mind that in OS X 10.6, Apple will be offloading many tasks onto the graphics processor. As a result, the main focus for the new iMacs has been on upgrading their previously pathetic grahics processors to ones that could be considered more mainstream. So, my initial disappointment has turned to interest in the second from top model, with the graphics upgraded to the 4850, which would yield about a 600% increase from the graphics performance of my current machine. Also, base RAM, maximum RAM and HD size have all doubled.

So, yes, the new iMacs are hardly revolutionary, but they have some significant improvements from the previous batch, and they are likely created with OS X 10.6 in mind.

Edit: sorry for the terrible formatting, but I can't seem to get the columns right.

Despite not believing the rumors about the Mini (still say Apple not redesigning the case to match the rest of the consumer machines is lame) I have to say I'm fairly impressed with it. Apple has addressed the graphics complaint by losing the integrated graphics crap as well as having bumped the specs to a reasonable level. And best of all, they finally banished the Combo drive to the tech oblivion it has long deserved. The only thing I can't figure out is whether or not the second RAM slot is user-accessible (the tech specs page doesn't say.) Assuming, the end-user can upgrade the RAM at a later date, it's a reasonable machine.

I do think the $599 price tag might be overshooting a bit but not so much that I wouldn't consider buying one.

What if I wanted a 20" iMac with the better graphics card? Not everybody has the room for a 24" monster on their desk. I feel like Apple just gave up on the consumer desktop market.... it's a shame because I've been an apple user since 1983... I want to buy a 20", but I feel like the older model was better. Any benchmarks anywhere?

Which card did the older 20" use?

excuse me for my ignorance, but for me the price for the mac mini stayed the same but doubled the ram and the HD. so whats the issue? Is it mostly over-seas buyeres?

My basic 20" has an Ati Radeon 2400 HD.

Anyway, I still want one of these. But it would take me a while to save up, probably 30-40 weeks. Do you guys think new iMacs will come out around the same time next year? Or maybe even late this year. It's probably too early to think about that though.

I put in my order this morning for the new imac within the first hour of going online. It said it ships within 24 hours. When I added the wireless mighty mouse it then said 2-4 business days. That was really frustrating because it's just a mouse, but I just rolled my eyes and ordered anyways (I have been waiting about 2 months what is 2-4 days more). I just checked my order status and it now says 8 business days to ship! So now, it is expected to be delivered during spring break, and that is what I was trying to avoid.

Does anyone think that I will get it sooner? I'm thinking that it is just them saying longer because of the expected high volume of sales.

In the UK the base model went up by £100 and the next model by a further £150, so you can see why we hate the price.

Such questions are generally answered more easily when you state exactly what doesn't count as "overseas" to you.

Basically, the issue is that since it's been so long since the Mini got an upgrade, the minor increase in specs and no price drop is essentially a price increase, relative to the rest of the industry during that time, and due to the economy.

Old GPU:3DMark,New GPU:3DMark,% Increase
GeForce 9400M: 439
Radeon 2600Pro: 630

, GeForce GT120: 1222
GeForce 8800GS: 3614,

so, I take it the older cards are better than the new ones? aside from the GT130 / Radeon 4850
