Well, Apple have now killed the Mac Mini in New Zealand.

The 320Gb Mac Mini is the exact same price as the white Macbook. While the Macbook only has a 120Gb HDD, all the other specs are the same and I know which one I'd rather spend NZ$1848 on.

Is it the older chipset in the Macbook (it lists DDR2 ram).

In the UK the cheap Macbook is only £70 more expensive than the top Mini.

Cheap Mini looks to be the way forward (especially if 2gb+ gives you more video ram)

Well, my eMac needs to be replaced, and i'm certainly not going to get a new iMac now, so its Mac Mini for me.

One question, is upgrading the CPU to 2.23 worth it? What difference to performance would it make? I'm gonna be using for photoshop, processing Raw files, and the odd game of Call of Duty.

Isn't the mac mini more expensive if you don't already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse? Might as well get the entry level imac, it's the same thing in one package...

Click the images on the bottom for the 24" comparisons

No, you misunderstand. I can see that but the comparison chart only shows the performance of the 24" model with the built in card. It doesn't have anything to say about a 24" with the built in 9400M graphics. Which makes me wonder if the performance is *****, hence why they left it out of the performance chart??

Just purchased older molder 2.5 weeks ago

Ugh!! My parents just purchased the mid-range iMac on Feb 14th and now everything is updated. Almost the exact same specs (except for the nVidia Graphics chip) are now $300.00 cheaper.

Is there any price guarantee or store credit that Apple Store's perform if your purchase was 16-17 days ago?

They will price match but only on the exact same model number, not the price of a new model number. However, the price of the model they purchased may have gone down; check the online clearance shop. If it has, they could probably get a refund.

For returns/exchanges, you must start the process and get an RMA from them within 15 days of receipt of goods. If they opened it, there will be a 10% restocking fee.

I purchased a refurb last week; it was set to arrive yesterday just after the refresh announcements. First thing yesterday morning I found a better model in the refurb store, at a lower price than the one I bought (went from a 20"/2.4 GHz early 2007 to a 20"/2.66GHz early 2008 for $50 less), so Apple issued a RMA and I had a pre-paid shipping label waiting for the FedEx guy when he delivered the unit I was returning. Slapped the label on and it went back, shipping paid for by Apple. It never even came into the house! New one should be here Friday.

If you are within the 15 days, they make it easy. You may be able to negotiate beyond the 15 days, but chances are slim.

Looking at the 24" iMac, your Radeon 2600 cost $1399?

The new one with nVidia 9400M costs $1499?

I can understand why Apple have done this, many manufacturers have increased their prices.

But by choosing to focus so heavily on design you are simply pricing people like me out of the market. I readily admit that an Apple computer is far easier to use than a PC but at twice the price its simply not a cost that I am willing to pay.

Good luck Apple. I will continue to purchase and recommend your iPods and iPhones but you are targetting too much of an elite clientele for me to consider your computers for some time.

I guess it's good for anyone who has an old mini (ppc or solo) and looking for a an upgrade. But for those has has a duo 2 version; I don't see a BIG reason to upgrade (outside the nvidia video upgrade).

In this ecomony, I'm gonna hang on to my current mini and squeeze every life and thread processing outta it. Work mule, work!

If I were to upgrade, I'd like to see a quad core processor, and osx10.6 first.

Because...
Baseline Mac Mini @ $729 CDN
2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
120GB hard drive
8x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
NO KEYBOARD, MONITOR, OR MOUSE

~V.S.~

Inspiron 530s @ $699 CDN
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB memory
640GB hard drive
16x SuperDrive
Intel GMA x3100
19" DELL S1909WX Widescreen Display
Keyboard and Mouse included

The Mac Mini is still both a joke, and a rip off. Sorry Apple but you OS just doesn't make up for your rediculous pricing structure anymore. And in this recession?

You get what you pay for... good luck with that $699 purchase. When you're frustrated with the OS, you'll be wishing you had bought the Apple.

Yes, but its a hack. And a hack of a poor quality machine and parts. good luck.

There seems to be this conception that Apple use superior parts in their machines, but forgive me if I'm being naive, since the intel switch don't Apple now use the exact same parts that any other PC manufacturer uses. Same HDs, same (or worse) GPUs, same CPUs, same RAM, same displays, same chipsets.

They have (shock horror) even been known to use cheaper parts like the agere FW chipset, which has caused problems compared to the slightly more expensive and superior (and larger) TI chipsets.

So I think that saying that a machine has poor parts just because someone else makes it smells of fanboyism, even though I have to admit it does look fugly compared to the mini.

No matter what happens with the mac, as long as the iPhone farts people will be happy :)

After seeing the lackluster MacWorld 09 and then this lackluster iMac update, I think I see what's going on: no new innovative products get announced unless Steve is available to announce it. As long as Steve is sitting at home, we're only going to see evolutionary products rather than revolutionary products. So I expect the "real deal" stuff (incl Snow Leopard) in the second half of this year... <sigh>

Well Snow Leopard is very evolutionary, so I'd fully expect that to appear in the spring.

Things are actually fine as they are - there doesn't need to be anything 'novel' and I don't see what it has to do with Jobs (is the whole company just going to stand still? No).

I wouldn't be surprised to see a slight price drop in time for September's educational spree on a lot of these Macs, especially if sales are lacklustre.

Sneaky Apple. They found a way to make more money and hope the consumer won't notice. Now they are not alone in doing this, many companies do the exact same thing it is just when you pay the price you do for a Mac you should get those little extras.

And with the Mini, the faster CPU is not included in any base model. So far, it looks like if you want the faster CPU, you'll be buying direct from Apple.

No, you are caught up in the same misconception as many people are. Understand this, just because the specs match don't mean that the parts are the same. Example, Dell can charge $600 for a notebook PC with a 2.4Ghz, 320GB HDD, DVD+R, web cam and wireless N.
Apple can charge $1599 for the same thing. Why would anyone get the Apple when Dell can do it all?
This is where many people get confused, you are only comparing the "specs". If that's the case you can do this with just about any car.
It's a very good chance that Dell is using cheap parts in their computer judging from the quality control. Example, you can get cheap ram with the same specs as the higher end ram but it freezes your computer or you can spend more for quality ram that last.
Not one person here has proven that Apple uses the exact same make and model of parts for their Macs as Dell uses for their machines that are half the price. Yes, the processors are Intel but many of the cheaper Dells use the slower system bus and the DDR2 ram. All Apple's machines use DDR3 with 1Ghz bus.

Entertaining post, thanks.
Interesting to see an apologist posting the price of a dell/etc without going out of their way to bump the price up with careful configuration/lack of research.

I think you might be a bit on the "Steve is the end all for CEO's" club. In the last 5 years what has Steve announced that was soooo innovative and revolutionary.

In 5 years there's been 2 products:
iPhone
Macbook Air

Granted they still offer plethora of products better than anyone else but in terms of topping themselves its only 2 products. Steve brings out the fun and flair on stage but ultimately the only people that see the keynotes are geeks and Mac fans which represents a small portion of Apple's customers. Apple will sell a lot of computers without Steve's intervention.

Dude, relax, it was an example and you can cool it with the name calling. My forum name is right next to my avatar, you can address me that way or chill out.

You had me until here.

Dell is buying from the same vendors as Apple but bad components?
