The new iMac now has a tapered foot like the 24" ACD.

One of these ordered...

iMac 24" Mid-range model
APPLE WIRELESS MIGHTY MOUSE-Z
KYBD (NUM) & USER'S GUIDE-K

1719€!!!

I am so sad I didn't just pick up the previous revision... Apple must have misunderstood how it works, normally computers get cheaper with time, not more expensive. If they get more expensive there usually is something that substantiates it like a larger screen (and no, a bit more memory doesn't cut it).

Also, I am paying purely for design and space considerations. I will run Windows on it because I must run Visual Studio (ok ok, I'll leave OSX in just in case), and to be honest, I don't care about the OS. When I surf the web it really does not matter how the buttons look like, and paying several several hundred euros premium for a more colourful backdrop just doesn't cut it. I have never understood why people care about the OS as it's the apps which matter and frankly, most people probably use their computer mostly for surfing nowadays so the underlaying OS really does not matter at all. Fortunately I can afford this **** but I am a stupid mindless being.

What the he.. , this is the way Apple, imac top line rise the price in economic crisis, you are crazy or what? I was waiting for the update to buy the 3.06 ghz imac, but now is 250€ more here in Spain, 2049€ vs 1799, the apple remote sold apart (can we call Apple thieves?) and the top graphics card 180€ optional. At the end I'm not gonna buy anything from Apple, come on guys, do the same to get Apple back to reality.

No new cpu's, and the graphics renamed 9xxx series from Nvidia that are a piece of junk for high prices.

Talking about Mac Pro, what liars Apple are, the cheaper model offers 4 core, not 8 core, before the entry model was 8 cores, down the price? more and more lies from Apple. Offer less for more cash, yeah!

And the worst is not yet to come. Probably for summer the imac line will be updated again with the real update and you waste your money for nothing....

I hate to tell you this but your post is quite contradicting. You say you don't care about the OS but you don't care to use OS X which is the preinstalled default. You're gonna run Windows as the main OS because only because of Visual Studio? Hmm, okay.
You mentioned about paying a premium? Well you are plus you are going to pay for a Windows license. I think you are burning yourself when you can get the Dell studio that will do the same thing for a less with Windows already pre-installed.
If you're just in the mood to throw away good money when there are better options for what you need to use it for then yes, maybe you're right about your last line. ;)

The integrated graphics on the first 24" really has me bothered. That would be the one I'd plump for but have you noticed that the display comparison chart here: http://www.apple.com/uk/imac/features.html#performance

Gives no comparison of the 9400M on a 24", only on the 20". This leads me to worry that the graphics performance is actually worse than the standalone 256MB card on the old 2.8 model it has replaced.

You are totally right about me contradicting myself and about throwing away the money... it's just that I find the screen so good in the iMac and that the computer is beautiful :D

I will occasionally run OSX (probably most of the time), but I am not paying the money for the OS. Therefore I was a bit disappointed (like all of you) about the price increase and very minor speed bump.

Seriously, it's only 100-200 more than a previous generation iMac with these specs, and you get DDR3 ram! And who cares if the tech is old, it can still play Crysis on high (I think), so it's still a very good computer.

bad mushrooms

Anyone noticed the pricing disparity on Apple BTO upgrades on the Minis?

In the UK Apple Store:
low-end mini + 2.26GHz CPU + 4GB RAM + 320GB HDD = £879.00
high-end mini + 2.26GHz CPU + 4GB RAM (320GB HDD included) = £849.01

Way to go, Apple!

High end gets the 256Graphics unlike the low which is 128 :(

Again, another person expecting a price rise with every update. Of course its got DDRIII RAM. It's 2009.

Nobody's saying it's not a very good computer. Everybody's saying it's just as good as any refresh in the last 5 years, but it costs 30% more this time.

Not quite, the amount of graphics RAM that is shared is dependant on how much system RAM installed. Minis with 1GB can only share 128MB, while 2GB (and above, I presume) share 256MB for the graphics.

Could anyone tell me which system would be the better buy;

Either the previous 24" 2.8GHz, 320HDD, 2MB, 256 ATI 2600 at £1,120 or the new 2.66Ghz 24" model?

Wuld the new memory and graphics card make up for the slower porcessor?

Please help!!!!

Definitely, a couple hundred mhz CPU side does not affect performance at all except in benchmarks, if even that.

Well, my eMac needs to be replaced, and i'm certainly not going to get a new iMac now, so its Mac Mini for me.

One question, is upgrading the CPU to 2.23 worth it? What difference to performance would it make? I'm gonna be using for photoshop, processing Raw files, and the odd game of Call of Duty.

This is a truly shocking 'update'...how can Apple justify the pathetic specs against the ludicrous prices when Dell are selling the quad core XPS430 inc 20'' monitor for £629?? And you can add a blu-ray drive if you want.

All because it runs OSX? That really isn't enough I'm afraid.

I'm English!

And you freely admit that? I try to keep it secret! ;)

Got all my finances in order, heading down to the Exeter Apple store today to pull the trigger and buy myself the top-end iMac if they have any in stock. I was tempted by the ATi graphics upgrade, but the online store is citing 6-8 week waiting time, which is lunacy.

I doubt they'll have any ATi models in store anyway, seeing as it's a CTO option... Either way, the GT130 seems to be more than capable of running the games I play at the moment, I'd just have liked the 4850 for future-proofing...

I'm defo buying the new one. This is the best buy of all the updates. £75 more I know but you get double the memory and double the hard drive.

I paid £1249 3 years ago for the first intel 20" with 250g and 1g of RAM.

So I'll happily pay £1199 for this!!

I think 2.23GHz CPU worth it only if you deal with video processing, like video rendering, converting video files from one format to the other etc, but still the difference will be small. For normal Photoshop use and image processing, RAM is more important than processor clock speed. For gaming only the graphic card makes difference.

Here is an alternative I'm looking at now (I'm based in UK) from PearC (who are based in Germany):

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 / 3.0 GHz
Hard disk: 1000 GB, 7200rpm, S-ATA
Memory: 8 GB DDR2 [4x2], 1066 MHz
Graphics card: GeForce 9800GTX Plus, 1024MB
2nd Hard disk: 1000 GB, 7200rpm, S-ATA
Optical drive: BluRay Writer 6x
2nd Optical drive: No choice
Firewire: Firewire 800, 3-Port
Wi-Fi: PCI Card 802.11b/g/n, Up to 300MBit/s
Bluetooth: USB Bluetooth Stick
Operating system: Mac OS X Leopard

Coupled with a dell 24' screen the total cost comes to around 2k. I suspect more companies will spring up selling PC systems to European macheads unhappy with Apple's hardware offerings. Hopefully that will drive prices down.

I may wait for snow leopard to come out and see how the hacking community get to work on making that pc-compatible (to take advantage of openCL etc).

I don't think these iMacs are good enough for consumer-HD editing (long render times)

In the European socialist paradise, including New "Labour" Britain, the gap between the rich and the poor is wider than ever. If you can't afford these prices, you're not on the side Apple's trying to target. Sorry.

Well that rules out about 98% of the population... Sounds like a great business plan.

Well, Apple have now killed the Mac Mini in New Zealand.

The 320Gb Mac Mini is the exact same price as the white Macbook. While the Macbook only has a 120Gb HDD, all the other specs are the same and I know which one I'd rather spend NZ$1848 on.
