why not just call the imac a bargin imac instead of a new imac. i was hoping to see actual advancements, not better equipt for the same price

still holding for quad core and blu ray....thanks for the ram and hd though....

At the rate things are going, a high-end PC powered by the Intel Core i7 CPU with 8 GB of RAM, 1 TB Serial ATA-II hard drive, 512 MB nVidia or ATI PCI-E graphics card with DVI-D output, and a nice 24" LG or Samsung 1920x1200 flat panel looks like a bargain in comparison. Given that Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate editions with SP1 is stable and reasonably fast on a Core i7 system, why would you bother with an overpriced iMac?

That's a monopoly for you. If you want something that runs OS X, then it's the only choice you have.

Granted that's so, you'd still think that Apple would try to strike a better balance between profit margins & offering consumers value in today's economic climate. Mac desktop sales have fallen recently & after these price increases I expect them to continue falling.

The most obvious upgrade to Time Capsule would seem to have been a storage capacity bump ... but no. 1TB is an awful lot for some, but not for everyone. Having to stack two of these at $1000 for the extra TB just means I might have to wait a little longer before TC really makes sense for me.

I am VERY disappointed with the mini. It should have a proper 3.5" drive in there, not some tinkertoy for laptops. >.< FAIL APPLE! And more expensive without SATA 3.5" drive!!

Aside from that it is a nice little computer.

The "tinker toy" in my Macbook Pro has been running fine for 3yrs. Not sure what you mean here.

Finally

And about time... Glad I never went out and got the netbooks I had been thinking of... Now just have to decide what to get? Mini or iMac?????

Prices!!

All the prices have gone up!!

There now no cheap imac, or cheap mac mini.

for the same spec 20" imac now is more than the old 20" imac!

for 20", 2.66GHz, 2GB ram, 320gb drive, was £929, now is now £949! Prices should come down for the same spec, not up.
Thats how computer progress...
Going on apples logic, all computers should cost £1million buy now, because thats how much they would have cost 20 years ago for this spec!

(i know they have better graphics and ddr3 new proccesors..etc etc, but thats just part of the evolution of computers!)

Bad Buisness plan apple...!

And this is what you give us after nearly a year of waiting ....

What the F***!!!! Apple ... are you guys taking the P***!!!

£1899 ($2,734) for a 3GHz dual core machine, or £1,200 for an entry level machine that doesn’t even offer the option of improving the graphics card.

This is surely Apples way of saying goodbye to the desktop market ... I honestly cannot believe the cheek of it! Words fail me ... I've been waiting for an update for nearly a year and this is what you give us?

Before you fanboys start moaning, lets just see what £1,799 buys me from Dell ... ready ...

XPS
Quad Core i7 2.93GHz 8mb Cache 1333MHz FSB
24" Display
8GB RAM
1.5TB Drive
512MB ATI Radeon 4850 (extra £40 option to add to the Apples £1,799!)
Blueray player
... with about £100 change.

Ok ok, we all love OSX ... but Im sorry, I'd rather take a poor handling Ferrari for a drive than a well balanced Hyundai!

Apple ... congratulations for alienating your entire desktop base and for giving your credibility as innovators a firm kick in the teeth!

I’m off to buy the Dell (minus £270 as I already have a 24") and for the massive saving AND substantial increase in spec, I'll live without OSX (until I can Hackintosh that is!)

OUCH.

Are these price rises due to to the weak pound?

£200 rise above is board is terrible.

Glad I'm not due a replacement til August 2010

Yea, interesting how the wireless keyboard style has now become the STANDARD WIRED KEYBOARD. So if you go into an Apple Store and want an iMac, you'll get the smaller, crappier keyboard with no number pad and WIRED. Who wants that??

The new mini is everything I had hoped for and more. And dual-monitor extended desktop support. Sweet. It's not the headless desktop I had hoped for, but it will more than do for me, and they'll get my business.

Nice job, Apple. Just wish the HD upgrades were more reasonably priced.

I know the prices are kind of disappointing for Brits in particular, but you really should blame your own ridiculously weak currency. There is nothing Apple can do about it. This trend will continue for a long while, so if you don't like it, you should move out of the UK, really.

Yes, let's leave the UK in protests over apple pricing! :p

Actually, there is something Apple can do about it, drop the price down, lower their profit margins and try to grow their market in the UK. The shock of that sticker price could be major to most consumers here, in the middle of a recession is not when you want to see people putting their prices UP on a luxury good after all.

Not saying that this would be a sensible move for Apple but it's something they COULD do.

Did anyone see the prices on the refurbished old iMacs, they're looking really good right now, $1199 for a refurbished 24" 2.8 C2D same specs as mine, $1399 brand new same model.

THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE GREATEST DAYS EVER.
I am (hopefully) getting a job in the next few months and a Mac mini is going to be the first thing I get!
Although! I went and looked at the new iMac and it's amazing! I can't believe all the 24-inch models have 4GB ram.

I know this is really lame, but I think I'm about to cry!

Lame is an understatement.

recap. Photoshop experts know jack-all about hacked photos.

It wasn't so long ago that it was killing the dollar, but Apple didn't change prices then. Now it's the other way around, they are really P1SSING ME OFF!!

Good point. I was thinking of getting the mini, maybe I'll wait another month. :)

I'm with you guys. Does anybody know how long they usually provide free OS upgrades for? I seem to recall something like that when 10.4/10.5 came out but I would hate to buy the computer now and then have to pay to upgrade. Then again, maybe this is part of Apple's devious scheme. Buy now and then pay extra for the OS upgrade.

As far as pricing goes, if you're going for an iMac you should join NAPP (The National Association of Photoshop Professionals) for $99.00 and save a little over the membership price on the computer. You only save a little bit now but if you ever buy anything else throughout the year from Apple you save a little bit more. The membership will immediately pay for itself. Plus you get all the other deals and perks that come with being a member. I love it!

By the way, this isn't SPAM. I'm actually being serious. www.photoshopuser.com

Wow... I'm glad I waited this time last year for the May '08 iMac update... That one was worth the wait. Sorry to y'all who waited for this update - it seems rather disappointing.

/happy with my now "outdated" iMac

For everyone complaining about the UK prices, one simple answer - the exchange rate. We've got rather used to £1=$2. But now at £1=$1.40, things aren't too great.

At that rate a $599 Mac Mini = £428. Then add 15% VAT, and you get £492... only £7 less than they are selling for.

So, don't blame Apple this time. My own cynical opinion is that the government is letting the £ go artificially low to help exports and discourage imports.

second that. refurb macs are the way to go, even though it is older technology.

I actually think the pricing is generous to the British customers.

It should be even more expensive given how weak the pound is right now. Given how they manufacture the products, Apple shouldn't be making much in the UK sales even at this price point.

Most other PC makers aren't making ANY money in the UK sales right now, in fact, as their "profit" is worth absolutely nothing outside the UK.
