Anyone else notice that when you go to buy the 2.0GHz Macbook, it lists it has having a backlit keyboard? In the tech specs it says only the 2.4Ghz model has it.

lol, just wanted to post this...i guess it is a mistake looking at the specifications
"An illuminated keyboard, a popular feature of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, now comes standard on the 2.4GHz MacBook model"

Why do people that like the glossy screen feel the need to convince the others that it is a good thing ? Are you that Apple fanboys ? I don't like them, they cause me headaches and I've tried them, both the iMac and the old Macbook.

Its human nature...if it doesnt bother me, its not a problem.
Steve suffers from this I think. ;)

I have had issues with glossy myself...though it is 'pretty' it can be annoying the glare and cause headaches.

Peace

I love my MBP the way it is, I don' think I will be upgrading to the new style.
I do have glossy screen now because I like the way it looks better.
I liked the pro series because they looked awesome in their aluminum cut.
iMac looking screen, black keyboard, aluminum base....
Whatever they are smoking they need to take it back and get their money back :D

If I wanted a ghey bar looking notebook I would had gone with an HP.

Totally agree EggYolk.... Taking one of these glossy screens on set with stage lights allround is going to be such a nuisance.
Another hint that Apple is swinging the balance more from Pro to consumer. That saddens me.
I think it's time to petition or write to Apple directly to voice Pro users concerns about this trend. :(

“Are you going to offer a matte screen?”
-”No. We’ll offset reflection with more brightness - consumers love it.”

OK, so consumers will love their glossy screen on their MacBook. Good for them. But what about the pros who buy the MacBook Pros as answered in the first question? We are not consumers - we are pros! Don’t give pros the things consumers like in your pro products. That’s why you have two product lines in the first place Apple. Terrible.

For me it's the PowerBook without question...

i agree.

i feared that apple would hit a design block. i just didn't know that they would actually focus on this block and even make it into their presentation as "unified" whatever process.

So Terribly Sad

I have been a lurker on this site for the past 18 months....and I had to step up and say how disappointed I am by Apple's decision today. I was hoping that the glossy screen rumor was fake, but no, it is true. I waited for two years to buy a MBP and now I am going to go home after work and buy a 15" MATTE MBP refurb online...I am so upset....:(:(:(:(

Apologies if this has already been posted but I haven't read through all the replies yet :p. Yeh nice looking designs but why no FW400 on the MBP?

What. The. ****!

Did they just forget all the pro audio users out there who use FW400 audio interfaces? Very few use USB for audio devices, at least not with the specs of USB 2.0 (vs. FW400). This is absolutely ridiculous. Not that I am in the market for a new laptop mind, but this will surely affect quite a large portion of users. I like my SR and I am no way upgrading to this revision (until I can afford either Apogee or there is a good selection of affordable FW800 audio devices).

For me it's the PowerBook without question...

photoshopped desktop image of finalcut so you wouldnt see all the distracting glare...it even has its even photoshopped glare. lol

Now the matte screen beside it has a normal light source on the screen it would seem. :)

Thank you! I was so worried back in July when I bought my Macbook Pro that they might be updated and be so full of awesome. (remember all those rumors that the new macbooks would come out in July) I'm glad I made the choice back then to get one and not wait. Besides, I like the old design better.

Yeppers, I bought mine back in March and feel the same way. Its kind of silly to not like the new MBP's based on the way they look. However, when I compared mine with the new ones, I actually felt like I had a cooler car or something lol.

I'm not sure on the keyboard, I tried the Mac Air Keyboards back when I was looking at purchasing a MBP and liked the feel on the old keyboard better. But that personal opinion.

The Glossy screen is not a big deal to me, I like the Glossy better. But I know people who prefer the Matte screen and feel bad since they lose that choice.

So, taking all that away....the main thing here is that there really isnt that huge of an upgrade. I know the graphics were pumped up and larger HD's, but i'm not gaming on my MBP. If u need high graphics performance for work, I guess you have a Mac Pro.

I'd say people who waited for MBP's might be a bit bummed , but the winner here is he Macbook people. Looks like a nice laptop there for the money.

I don't even care anymore

I don't even care anymore...I don't think I will even follow this site anymore...What was Apple thinking? I've been using a mac since I was 13 years old, a 575 performa...I'm 26 now...13 years later, I have lost hope and respect for Apple. sigh :(

Cheaper Ram

Hey Everyone,
Did you notice that Apple ram just got cheaper. 2 gigs used to be 200 bucks, now 2 gigs is 150 bucks. It is still way overpriced, but at least they are trying.

MBP firewire

I have been waiting six months for this update and I am extremely disappointed to find that the new MBP's do not support firewire 400. Is it possible to get an adapter that converts from 400 to 800?

Apple is not going to sell any of these in Korea.

No-one here is going to pay 2 million won for a consumer laptop, especially one that was 25% cheaper at the same US price point in its last iteration (for comparison, the old top of the line MacBook was about a million cheaper than the new one, which is 2.5 mil). I'd expected a price increase due to the strengthening US dollar, but I'd like some of what Apple Korea is smoking.

I'm glad I bought my MacBook at the beginning of the year.

It's completely harebrained, if you ask me. Macs had been selling here quite well in the last year or so.

Other than that, they seem like nice enough upgrades.

Glossy == Fail

Glare causes eye strain. I reserve full judgement on the "glossy" until i see one in person but from a marketing perspective it seems like a bad move. CRT's designers went out of their way to promote flat anti-glare surfaces. Thus the perception for us old timers is that glossy is bad.

Overall this minor refresh is not even to warrant me upgrading my previous gen. model. I was hoping for a quad-core mobile chipset, some ridiculous clock speeds and a $800 13" macbook. Also, I hope laptops surpass the 4gB limit soon. Oh well there's always the next update.

No No No

I am very very disappointed and have to say it:

(a) Glossy screens - I don't want a free mirror with my laptop. Period.

(b) Price - Apple, you should use the vista opportunity to get MACs out to as many people as possible. Make MACs cheaper. $999 is not cheap and is twice the price of a crappy, but cheap PC. Many people vote with their wallet and never try out OS X because its different and expensive.

(c) Manufacturing - Great and wicked cool. But most people don't care about it if it adds cost. Hopefully, you will have figured out that there are cost savings with this path somewhere down the line.

Thank you for the removable battery and disk. High time.

Did they just forget all the pro audio users...

bikemonkey...they didnt just forget you - take a look at that 17inch and know they forgot all of us. ;)

- Old faulty Nvidia card in it
- slower speeds then the 15 inch
- where are the intel quads which are available for laptops? (Apple used to blame IBM for being slow...whats up now? 17 inch has plenty of room.)

oh...
- for those saying the update is coming...its here.
It says NEW by the 17inch. (yeah, kind of a joke, I know...though not to funny.) ;)

So again, they are leaving a bunch of people out in the rain on this.
Consumer end, they are doing a jam up job, and I am sure this is what Steve really always wanted.

Now the question is who will take off where Apple left off in the pro market? ;)

Peace

dAlen

p.s.
This would make a good macrumors article (or article period)
Addressing, not only the glare issue - as its a give or take on who this affects...but add to it the above.
Obviously the pro days are not as shiny as they used to be. (ask your mac pro friends) ;)

You do know that Firewire 800 is backwards compatible, don't you?
