Keep the MacBook Pro in Mono Tone, Silver or Black option.
Matt screen option and keep the FW400 port.
What were u thinking? jeez:mad:

later... they're working on it

It seemed to imply that today they are being refreshed...wait, no not implied...go to the Apple store. It actually says NEW beside the 17 inch. (this is the joke)

Peace

I'm confused here. Surely matt screens are matt because the surface is smearing out the light, diffusing it. That means that you're not seeing the pure colour that's underneath, but a colour filtered through the smeared out ambient light ?

'Glossy' screen actually just reflect ambient light straight back the way it came, so you see a purer image underneath. That's the reason most TVs are glossy, and why almost all photographers display their prints under 'normal' 'glossy' glass, not the non-reflective kind.

.... or am I totally mistaken... ?

If so, aren't glossy screens actually going to be BETTER for graphic design ?

IMO the problem with the ones we've had so far has been the poor performance of the panel underneath, which has suffered from a high degree of colour shift. It's nothing to do with the reflectiveness of the surface.....

Thank you! I was so worried back in July when I bought my Macbook Pro that they might be updated and be so full of awesome. (remember all those rumors that the new macbooks would come out in July) I'm glad I made the choice back then to get one and not wait. Besides, I like the old design better.

A good summary. ++ to you sir.

I'm following your lead and logging off, going to go hit a small black ball around.

I've never experienced this level of negativity on MacRumors.com and I am logging-off until at least Thursday. Perhaps, by that time, we will actually have legitimate opinions from those that have seen/used the new notebooks.

*Every port-related complaint can be addressed with the appropriate adapter. Ethernet to Firewire. IEEE1394 800 to 400. DisplayPort to DVI.
*Every glossy complaint can not be rationalized as NO ONE here has sat in front of these notebooks. I bought my MBA anyway and it doesn't bother me one bit. I use my desktop with 24" IPS for 'work.'
*There has ALWAYS been immediate negative feedback on Apple releases. From the small fraction of the general public that HATE the release a large number of them buy anyway.
*Students, you can't afford the new price-point? You mean even suckling off your governments teet for the last five years. Avert your glance from the MB Pro, it is not yours. The MB was designed with you in mind. Get a job on salary and buy yourself the best.
*Speak with your wallet. If after getting hands-on at Apple you aren't in love then don't buy. The (checkbook) pen is mightier than the sword.
*Please leave EPIC FAIL on your W.o.W. forums. We speak as adults here.

Best Regards,

".....However if you are using the machine in a studio would you not have a top level pro display hooked up to your machine anyway?"

With only about 30% of what I do taking place in a studio, a laptop is a necessary evil. Having a monitor that makes everything look 'pretty' does me absolutely no good! I need to know what things REALLY will look like before I get back to the studio and work 'em up on a 'real' computer! If my shoot computer shows me a high-contrast, brighter-than-real image, I am bound to have an underexposed final file waiting for me when I load the files onto my studio computer. (And before any of you smarty-pants chime in that I should check the histogram for exposure...that only works in 'normal' lighting situations...in almost everything I do, the histogram reference is simply an added tool...it is NEVER the final determining factor in me making a certain exposure!)

Look...I personally don't do any critical retouching on a laptop, but why shouldn't I have the option to? Apple is being so amazingly short-sighted by not offering a matte option it isn't even worth defending why they aren't. There isn't a single high-end user who works in graphics that would choose a glossy monitor over a matte version, unless by some miracle, a new, as yet undiscovered technology were invented making the two versions spit out the exact same result.

has anyone plugged a firewire 800 hard drive a firewire 400 HDV camera into one firewire 800 port with splitters and adapters? How does it work?

Do they even work right?

I know doing video editing, computers are very very very picky do you get drop frames?

Mmm... I've been a mac user for pretty much all my computing life, and as sad as it is to say, this really is the nail into the coffin for professionals.

I know a lot of people have been whining on and on about all things wrong with this revision, but really this goes beyond the specs. This is pure neglect of the sector of the market that kept a fledgling company afloat during some very tough times. So what do we get in return?

A computer with a glossy screen that 'consumers will love'...

I remember walking into an apple store about a year or so after the first ipod came out. It was Christmas and the store was going mad; iPod dementia had hit the world. I eventually managed to get the attention of a store employee and all he could say as he rushed past was "the iPod will be the end of apple, trust me". He was right.

The ipod gave apple a taste of mass market success and everything that went with it. Money. Money that fueled R&D into consumer devices like iphones, macbooks and imacs. I have nothing against this, but have always feared that eventually this 'consumerism' will overthrow the pro sector.

Today it has.

mmm... OK - so I'll stick with my MBP for now.. One thing I really value is the ability to run an audio interface over FW800 and an external HD over FW400 on my current machine.

It's really interesting watching 'pro's' getting some stick for complaining about the new MBP upgrade. I suppose you could class me as one of those - using a MBP in the field for audio/video/photography work. I'm not bitching about the updates though. It's just the way Apple seem to be going - more consumer based - that's where the $ is I guess.

An to be frank - There's no way I would do any 'critical' colour work on any laptop screen. Can't speak for others though.

I would not be surprised if a ground glass matte screen appears as an option on the MBPs though... and to be honest - I should really be using eSata drives via and express card for my video work on location.

A history lesson well remembered....

<complain>How can I live without a floppy drive!</complain>
<whine>What no internal modem!</whine>

I reality - I don't like the upgrades - so I'll stick where I am for a while - But I think Apple will address the gloss only screen on the MBP -assuming this is technically possible - It can't be that difficult can it?

I may snap up a couple of 23" ACD though whilst they're still around. :)

Everyone;s complaining about no macbook firewire but what the heck...

Macbook PRO has firewire 800, but where's the 400????

HOW THE HECK DO YOU CONNECT A VIDEO CAMERA?

WHy would they put 800? Is there a workaround for this?

Seems like an obvious question that wasnt asked at the session

It's a question that didn't need to be asked. All you need is a cable that is the 800-standard plug on one end, and the 400-standard plug on the other end. It's automatically backwards-compatible, and has been ever since 800 was introduced.

Sounds like a wonderful idea. Let's drum up some venture capital and start a computer company to make pro machines that'll pick up where Apple dropped us off :p Capitalism at work.

I was hoping Apple Toy Company would spin off the neglected "professional" computer business with Woz as the new CEO.

Bluray reason not believable

Now that HD-DVD is dead and Bluray is catching on even on cheap laptops, Apple does not have a valid excuse for not including bluray drives in their computers. While, I would rather watch Bluray movies in my projector from my PS3, there are several people on the go that will want to watch BD movies on their 1920x1080 resolution laptops or connect their laptops to projectors/monitors.

The drives are about $150. So, make it BTO.

MB Backlit Error

Anyone else notice that when you go to buy the 2.0GHz Macbook, it lists it has having a backlit keyboard? In the tech specs it says only the 2.4Ghz model has it.

Why do people that like the glossy screen feel the need to convince the others that it is a good thing ? Are you that Apple fanboys ? I don't like them, they cause me headaches and I've tried them, both the iMac and the old Macbook.

First time buyer

I've been a long time lurker and signed up just now to these forums to comment specifically on the notebook announcement. I was going to take my first dip into the Apple world to buy a MBP. But after seeing the UK price (£1400), I think I'm going to stick to Windows with a Dell or Sony Vaio (luckily I get 30% discounts on Vaios where I work).

Don't these people realise that there is a credit crunch and instead of upping prices they should be dropping them?

Severely disappointed.... :(

Are more expensive models really the way forward at the moment? I mean, don't get me wrong, I like the new look, and the better integrated graphics should be sweet, but Apple really needs a better budget option!

Ssd??

I am about to pull the trigger on a 15" MBP. Definitely going with 2.8 C2D, 4gb ram, but I can't decide to go with the 320 gb 7200 or to shell out $500 for SSD. I'd like to hear some opinions...i can just see SSD prices dropping rapidly soon, but i could live with 128 GB.

i am impressed with the new manufacturing techniques and how much they've streamlined and simplified the design. so, the new notebooks are both structurally rigid and aesthetically sound. but, i can't help but be a little dissapointed, even if it might sound superfluous, in regards to the choice of putting a black border around the screen bezel, ala iMac and to top it off, place a glass over it????? it's certainly keeping with the times and with the viaos of the world, but i can't help but admit that it does make me shake my head a little bit. sure, the black border and glass adds a little style and flair to the overall picture and it makes it look like a viao, but the whole understated appeal of the old notebooks are gone. and by understatement, i mean, industrial-look, whatever that means. i am certainly nitpicking and it is not by anymeans a dealbreaker, for me, but, i just wished they had made the MBP (at least) have an aluminum bezel just like the MBAIR. why??? i don't know. i think aluminum around the screen is better than a black border. that's it.

i am thinking that they will probably changed the color of the bezel in the next update and could be silver, ala, iphone/ipod. just a thought.

as for the scpecs? eh....
