Dude... chill... it's just a computer.

For some of us, computers are tools that we rely upon to make a f'n living. For pros that rely upon the OS X platform, Apple's asinine decisions to drop common functionality and features that we rely upon and use daily is a serious kick in the teeth.

STOP TELLING US that the shortcomings of the new machines are not a big deal - they most certainly ARE for those of us that actually use our gear for more than killing 3d trolls in some fake universe somewhere.

I really think that most of you guys talking badly about the new models should first go to an apple store and check them out for yourself. I'm sure they're much better than you think.
Ah, yes, by going to the store a matte option and an extra FW-port will magically appear …

I guess your way of buying computer is by looks alone. How splendid.

I'm thoroughly impressed. I like the new design and I expect it to be of high quality. I will definitely check them out as soon as I can.
LOL, you haven't got a clue as to whether these are "high quality" or not. Going by the dwindling of same quality during these past years, they're not.
But as you more than imply, you buy by looks and looks alone.

I am a pro and I LOVE glossy screens. My current Macbook Pro (the 2.6) is Matte and every time I see someone with a glossy version I'm jealous. I guess if I worked outside I'd think the glare sucked... but I'm a pro, I work in an office, lol....

I agree.

People are making way too much of this glossy/matte issue. Remember people these are one solid piece of glass. No aluminum bezel, all glass.

The glossy displays are more accurate, have higher contrast, and brighter due to the fact that they do not have a smeary matte coating on the glass.

I think people are thinking these will look like the older cheaper MB glossy displays of the past. Thats not correct. These will be like the MBA glossy displays. Higher-res with led backlight.

Yes, there will be more glare outside but there will also be more contrast and more brightness. All iphones have glass glossy displays and no one rants about the poor quality of these displays outside.

Some have said that glossy displays are impossible to calibrate, that just isn't true. It is very easy to calibrate a MBA display and it is glossy.

bikemonkey...they didnt just forget you - take a look at that 17inch and know they forgot all of us. ;)

- Old faulty Nvidia card in it

Well, no fair enough. Heh. But I'd rather have the old 17 for my uses!

Although I am still shocked. Yeh you can get adapters for FW800>400, but surely this will just take away from the quality of the audio signal, nevermind having to buy an adapter. I wouldn't have been so annoyed if they had made a backwards compatible FW800/FW400 connection (like the new revision supposedly, at least for FW800). And finally, I'll take my broken nvidia any day ;). Although it has now been fixed, so fingers crossed.

Apologies if it has been asked, and it's probably a little early anyway, but does anybody know what type of SSD is used ?

Is it SLC or MLC ? Perhaps one of the new Intel drives ?

I ask because I'd like to know what I fork out €500 extra for. If it's for an MLC drive I'd better just go with base config and buy a second SSD at the local PC shop.

I have been a lurker on this site for the past 18 months....and I had to step up and say how disappointed I am by Apple's decision today. I was hoping that the glossy screen rumor was fake, but no, it is true. I waited for two years to buy a MBP and now I am going to go home after work and buy a 15" MATTE MBP refurb online...I am so upset....:(:(:(:(

Have you even used an Aplpe glossy monitor in your workspace? I've never had a problem with my 06 Macbook. I would ask someone to borrow their MB and look at it. The glossy is ALRIGHT!

Geez, and I wonder how you people would have survived on CRT monitors

I am a little disappointed that the specs on the new notebooks aren't as awesome as I hoped and I really wanted to get a performance boost but I don't mind the design changes and really hate all the gaps in my current MBP. I think I'm going to like the new trackpad mainly because it'll probably won't wear out and develope a shiny area after a few months. I'm having a hard time deciding if the 15" screen is worth the $400. I don't do anything that requires a fast of a graphics CPU. I do like having the extra screen real estate but lighter would be nice too. Decisions... decisions...

On a side not I just love all the people picking apart the last image leek last night. I love how everyone was picking apart the obvious Photoshop. Go back and look at all the people crying fake.

You do know that Firewire 800 is backwards compatible, don't you?

The only problem is being on the go. Say you have an hdv camera, mic, headphones, external hard drive, mini dv cam. If you're in the type of work where you have to get the shot and encode, who wants to sift through the many wires already needed just for an "adapter". imagine needing an adapter for using usb. If it gets misplaced you're out of luck.

But secondly, yes, unfortunately as a professional photographer you are kinda forced into buying the next best thing that Apple puts out simply because every single piece of digital everything is designed first & foremost...FOR A MAC! So if I wanna keep using the newest software and work effectively, I hafta buy a Mac! And let's not forget that all of my clients also work almost exclusively on Mac systems, so being able to have everything Mac-centric helps a lot...
Bless, what a funny little world you must live in.
Do you find reality a bit overwhelming?

I'm also a Pro photographer and find that many clients use PCs as well as Macs and that some digital software is PC only, so certainly not designed for Macs primarily. Besides if Apple weren't so up their own fundaments, you wouldnt have the situation where if you want to run PS CS4 64bit you have to use Windows.

pro?

perhaps it should be called the mac book rep?
we're not interested in impressing the salary man next to us on the plane.
sure the glossy screen looks nice but what a pro wants is colour accuracy a fully calibrated system for their work-flow.
I shoot tethered with a £20000 camera, fire wire 400,112meg files not wireless from my cameraphone.
remember that Macs have been championed by the creative industries for years.
We want Fire wire We want matte screens.
If we cant upgrade our laptops we wont be buying mac pros either.

If you don't care about graphics, why are you buying a pro? Unless you really are after screen size, in which case you're better off buying a little cinema display and a macbook. If you've not upgraded in 4 years then anything you buy from Apple will have better graphics anyway.

Agree on the gestures to be honest. Not much point outside of my iPhone.

Glossy - get over it. Actually I might add that to my sig.

Yeah, you're right, I could take that graphics comment back... I could probably use a better graphics although I'm still quite happy with what I have.

And why Pro? Never liked iBooks or MacBooks, mainly for the plastic housing and the overall look and always needed a bigger screen so that are my main reasons for buying a Pro. And I just needed to be portable, couldn't carry around a display and a Mini...

To give Apple some credit - I really like the look of these laptops when they're closed. It's really sleek and being made from one piece makes them even more beautiful. But when opened I just cannot understand Apple's desire for the laptops to look exactly like iMacs. Don't like the black border and especially the black keyboard. I think this actually kills otherwise beautiful design. It just doesn't look as good as before, instead it looks somewhat cheap to me...

But that's me.

What I wish is that you could update your graphics cards.
Seems like with the apple pismo stuff like that was upgradable.

But then again my ram in the ti-667 is easy to get to under the keyboard and they made it harder in more recent macbooks. (though I guess they took a stab at fixing that.)

Point is, laptop should be upgradable. Not sure what Steves obsession about thin is. Its o.k. to have some meat if you can get it to do what you want it to.
This isnt a fashion show...is it? lol

Peace

The new laptops look nice. Huge styling improvement over the previous MacBook Pros, which were embarrassingly old and lacking in style for Apple. I'd even say the old MacBook Pros were ugly.

But like many others, I feel let down. No new 17" laptops. And the glossy screen is probably a deal killer for me.

No FW 400 port means having to buy yet another adapter.

And still no Blu-Ray. My old PowerBook is wheezing horribly, but the new ones are lacking options that I feel are essential if I'm going to part with that much cash.

On the "gotta have it" meter, the new laptops are resounding "gotta wait."

And you expect to be believed?

Oh, so a person's knowledge of apple is hinged on how long they've been a member on MR for? That makes perfect sense.

Go double click your way to buying one of those AWESOME new 'pro' machines...

Maybe this has been answered, but will current (15" 2.4GHz) Macbook Pros receive a software update to support the new four finger gesture?
