Is firewire technology dead then?

firewire is not dead. but, it IS dead to the new MB.

what's interesting about the presentation is how they talked about the new aluminum fabrication process and neglected to talk about why they chose glass with a black border for the screen contributing to more reflection to what is already a glossy LCD screen behind it and their reasoning behind killing a few ports here and there across the MB and MBP line? especially, FW on the MB????

I'm interested in opinions as to which of the following new models offers the best deal for the price?

New high-end MB
Either of the new MBP's.

Not being a professional user, personally, I'm tempted to say the MacBook.
But with Snow Leopard using GPU's to boost overall performance, is the low-end MBP a more "future-proof" choice for a few hundred more than the high-end MB?

Also, what about the high end MBP double the cache from 3MB to 6MB along with a 2.53 processor and a 512 Dedicated GPU.

I've actually talked myself into the lower end MBP over the upper-end MB. the bump in the MBP of .13 GHz, double cache and double graphics for a non-pro user just don't seem worth the $500 (and the extra 2GB of RAM). For me it's more of a mental thing - dropping over 2k is a mental barrier that I prefer not to cross.

Also, the addition of FW800, 3" of screen real estate and the dedicated GPU makes the jump worth it to me but that's because I'm future proofing by having the FW800 in there.

So how are people going to connect their firewire cameras and drives to the new MBs?
Even the MBPros, they have firewire 800. Is there an adapter?

Why glass?

I dont get it.. Why add a piece of glass on top of a display? Sure, on the iPhone it protects the touchscreen, and on a tablet it would also, but on a laptop? How many people transport their laptops unfolded?

Glass increases the overall weight?
Glass breaks?
Glass is glossy. (I guess thats the reason)

the more i look at the new macbook the more i want to get macbook pro.. but the current design really isn't that great, it really looks like a HP laptop now.. on top of that, i am guessing there will be a price drop/update somewhere before/after the holiday season(maybe snow leopard? or centrino2? or maybe huge price drop? or may even be redesign again!!)

and why are they still using Core 2 Duo?? isn't centrino 2 out??

a little longer wait may result a macbook with snow leopard os to be pre-installed.

should i just wait a little longer?? :( while getting a dell/hp before that? :p

Read the first 6 pages or so.... not really in the market for any of the new products, but I really do have to ask....

What were they thinking when it came to the battery power level on the far left side corner of the Pro's? Wouldn't it have made more sense to put it on top of the keyboard so it can be easily seen? Or just a darn software applet in the dock or something?

I will look forward to seeing the MacPro user tipping their laptops up to see the display.

I've never experienced this level of negativity on MacRumors.com and I am logging-off until at least Thursday. Perhaps, by that time, we will actually have legitimate opinions from those that have seen/used the new notebooks.

*Every port-related complaint can be addressed with the appropriate adapter. Ethernet to Firewire. IEEE1394 800 to 400. DisplayPort to DVI.

Wrong. Stop talking about Ethernet to Firewire adapters. They don't exist, and even if they did, OSX would have to specifically support it (when's the last time you saw an option to import video in FCP from your ethernet port or something).

Just watched the keynote...they made it clear that the macbook is their number 1 selling computer. The movie at the end was about the macbook...

Point is, Apple isnt about the 'pro' market anymore.
Again, the firewire was ripped out of the macbook to get the consumer video hobbyist to upgrade to the pros. - so as I mentioned, pro is now advanced enthusiast. If you want a true pro machine...well, let me know if you find it. ;)

...and no, a "new" 17 inch with the old faulty Nvidia card doesnt count. :)

Peace

dAlen

Where? I need a pro (very powerful) laptop for my studio with FW...NOW. I've waited so long for apple just to f*%k up update after update. I'm currently a PC user but wanted to get my first mac and give logic a go and have a reliable OS.

What would you suggest?

you're right. it's totally for style points. viao-ness points. whatever.

Hmmmm

Well I, like a lot of others are somewhat disappointed with the new offerings. I've a had G4 17" PB since April (ish) 2003 for on-the-go stuff, and was really really looking for the new 17" system. I've just ordered the 15" pretty much out of desperation as I need a replacement now. I suppose the good news will be in a few months time (of course I'll be pissed I didn't wait) they'll release a newly designed 17 MBP with the new quad core processor, with the new giant drives...etc. etc.... and a matt screen option. It will come.... so will Christmas....

Centrinos are less powerful than the Core 2 Duos - much like the Centrinos of old.

Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology
For Mobile Computing

The best notebooks have Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology insideΔ1

Intel’s NEWEST and BEST performing notebook technology includes:
• Up to 50% faster performance when multitasking‡1
• Up to 2X greater range and up to 5X better wireless performanceΔ2
• Designed for the longest possible battery lifeΔ3
• Up to 90% faster performance on intensive multimedia applications like HD video encoding‡2

does it mean that's a lie???

Do you really wanna play that game and compare your life to mine?!!

Yeah...you got me...I live in a MAC ONLY World where every freaking one of my art directors and photo editors is on a Mac and they are usually on those Macs on my shoots, so if I'm NOT on a Mac, I'm at a disadvantage. Are there work-arounds where I could alter my life and become a PC-based doofus, sure...but why do I hafta change my workflow because Apple decides to dump a Firewire port that has become industry standard and only offer a glossy screen option when the only people who like that sorta thing are usually found in their parents basement playing video game tournaments or searching for porn!
Well I have to deal with people who don't have a Mac. Which was the point, there is a non Mac world too. Especially outside the US.
Not sure why you equate glossy screen with porn - is that because it wipes clean better?
Besides if Apple want to screw over their users they can, as there is no competion, if you use their software. And why I would never commit 100% to such a capricious company.

I see you completely ignored the not everything is mac first part of post.

I don't even care anymore...I don't think I will even follow this site anymore...What was Apple thinking? I've been using a mac since I was 13 years old, a 575 performa...I'm 26 now...13 years later, I have lost hope and respect for Apple. sigh :(

Given that you signed up to the site in October 2008, I'm sure you'll be a great loss.

The good news: Steve is still alive, but just barely.

The bad news: Apple, as pros used to know it, is dead.

Time to move on.

:apple:

The humanitarian in me says live long and prosper Steve.

The computer user in me is going to order a Dell Precision 6400. Mobile quad core. 8GB memory. 1GB Quadro 3700. 2 x 320GB raid 0 drives. Blu-ray with a 17" HDMI. eSATA ports. 19x12 matte screen. Maybe I'll be able to do a hackentosh. I wanted to give Apple my money but they didn't want it.

Centrinos are less powerful than the Core 2 Duos - much like the Centrinos of old.

you are wrong, i guess

centrino 2 means = intel CPU + intel Chipset + intel wireless networking

since apple using intel CPU only it is not centrino 2 - but these CPUs are centrino CPUs with 1066Mhz FSB.

Why downgrade the processor? I love my 2.2 Ghz MacBook w/4GB RAM and 250GB HD. I only spent about $1500 on it.

I think the white one is still the best deal. It has firewire and they upgraded it to the superdrive.
