Yeah but your glass screen will break and you'll have to buy a glossy apple external screen and and adaptor for your macbook pro so you can use it :D
The Peugeot 307/308 SW has a large glass panorama top. It is more sturdy and secure than the standard metal ones.

So glass doesn't have to be bad if it's of good build. One advantage is that you can clean it much more easily and securely without fear to apply too much pressure. Furthermore it's very likely less prone to scratching and other bad things that can happen when running around with an open laptop in nature. ;)

One bad thing I can easily thing of is that you will leave fingerprints on the edges whenever you open or close the thing. I don't like that on any of the glossy mobile phones' glass screens.

No new mbp for me... the cheapest one is 3 grand australian... stupid strong american dollar... but i woulda payed 2.4 maybe... no way in hell 3

Interesting

The humanitarian in me says live long and prosper Steve.

The computer user in me is going to order a Dell Precision 6400. Mobile quad core. 8GB memory. 1GB Quadro 3700. 2 x 320GB raid 0 drives. Blu-ray with a 17" HDMI. eSATA ports. 19x12 matte screen. Maybe I'll be able to do a hackentosh. I wanted to give Apple my money but they didn't want it.

I can't live with windows let us know if you get hackintosh working well, i think a lot of others are thinking the same thing. Maybe just maybe you should hold out for the 17" ?

The weird thing is that in apple promo shots and videos, they actually emphasize the horrific reflections coming off the display.

So does the 1300$ lower model macbook have a backlit keyboard or not. In the keynote he only mentions it as an upgrade to the upper level one. But on apple.com store it shows it on both when you checkout.

Hmm, I do a lot of small presentations using keynote on my old matte MBP. I wonder if the glare will be a problem with the new glossy screen if the client is sitting off angle...

It of course depends on your lighting, but when I had a alu iMac this was a problem all the time.

Yuk!!!

It seems to me that Apple have emphasized more to the point of better graphics capability, and forgotten about everything else in the design/production process.

I won't be buying a Macbook/Pro then. I'll stick with my lovely white iMac ;-)

Michael.

Just went and bought the old 15 inch Macbook Pro from the Apple Store. They are discounting them by $400. I didn't think the upgrades were worth the savings and I really wanted the matte screen.

The guy at the store said that the memory change would probably have the most impact unless you were a heavy graphics user. Having said that he hadn't seen the machine yet.

My guess is that they'll run out of the old models pretty quickly, but $400 less than yesterday is a pretty good deal for the old Pros. Basically got the 15 inch at the same price as the same spec macbook.

You should probably check out MacMall before doing something like that - they have crazy good deals on old models.

Don't Worry Be Happy

Dont Worry, Be Happy
The view from the Ivory Tower

BlueRay - Sony screwed us. And we don't like physical media that competes with iTunes. Be happy you still have a superdrive.

FW 400 - We don't like ports. Period. They drill nasty holes in our pretty Aluminium. Be happy we didn't remove the redundant USB port.

Display Out - Don't worry, be happy. It will work with the new Apple LCD TVs that we will sell you.

Glossy Displays - Samsung/LG screwed us for Matte displays. We wanted them to cut cost.. They played hardball and we dropped them in favor of cheaper, shiny new displays. Be happy, we also know you like to stare at pretty girls sitting behind you, just as we do.

Nvidia - Wait till snowleopard and then you can use the GPU as an accelerator. Your macbook will have a new life, assuming your glass screen hasn't cracked. The rest of you with older macs, be happy we still acknowledge you exist.

Missing Remote - Don't worry, you have an alternative. Get a iPhone and the remote control app.

Don't worry, be happy.

Put that user-removable hard drive and increased graphics **** in the old macbook Pro bodies, and I'd be happy. The rest of these updates can GTFO.

Seriously, do Apple not understand the idea of target audiences and user bases? The Macbooks are now similar in power to MBPs with their discrete graphics processors, and all of them have that shît glossy screen. Would be a good time to buy a 17" MBP I guess.

I forsee this update turning off a lot of pro creative users. Makes me want even more to build a Hackintosh and just rock my current MBP as long as possible.

The MacBooks still have integrated graphics which is supposedly still only 55% as powerful as the discrete graphics in the MBP.

Are their any disadvantages asides portability from using a firewire hub. Did the last range of MB pro's firewire ports run of a single hub anyway so the performance wouldn't suffer?

"...well im sure your all gona call me mad but I am a professional photographer and part time student ^^ and i just bought a new macbook pro....."

Nah...I ain't gonna call you mad, 'cuz despite all my pissin' & moanin', I'm gonna hafta do the same! What choice do I have? I can't switch to PC and I can't stay with the existing laptops I use, so I must move 'forward', even though the piece of equipment I have to do it with leaves me cold!

As many have already said, if you're gonna go outta your way to label a product 'PRO', then give us something PROFESSIONAL!!! What possible reason could Apple have for dumbing down this model? Not offering a Matte screen option and dumping the Firewire 400 port isn't gonna save money and this isn't some seminal moment in computer design like when the engineers decided, "Who needs SCSI?!! Lose It!!!". Firewire 400 is industry standard and will be for at least the next few minutes, so Apple should have included it. As for the glossy screen, like I said, for critical work, you wanna dump your images onto a desktop unit with a fancy-schmancy-mega-spendy-calibrated monitor, but there are plenty of times when I'm on a plane frantically retouching a job so I can transmit it as soon as I land...on a glossy monitor I will now have to basically guess as to what the final density should be!

I leave you to fight amongst yourselves, 'cuz I've got a gallery opening to go to and plenty of cheap white wine to drink!

I was waiting for this refresh to get a mbp, but I'm not really impressed. Honestly, I just don't like the black trim around the screen...I think it's ugly lol. I hope it looks awesome in person?

the more i look at the new macbook the more i want to get macbook pro.. but the current design really isn't that great, it really looks like a HP laptop now..

+1

The design worked okay for the iMac and a little worse for the MBA... But it sucks BIG time on the MB and especially the MBP. Jesus... What where they thinking when designing this?

And all glossy screens? Seriously. How many movie editors and photographers will now choose not to update/buy a new MBP when they see this?
I guess Apple should have thought about that.... But it doesn't seem like it.

At least they upgraded the display of the 17'' to LED. So I'll either upgrade to that one now or wait till Apple pull themselves together.

WTF were they thinking........

Oh, are you? Looked at your "Pro" site and your "Pro" work there little one. Do you have any idea who Brad Trent is and what sort of pro he is? Pretty evident that you don't. Your clients are consumer/retail types like Sears happy portraits. Of course they use PCs! That digital software for PCs only, well, more schmalz to you. Enjoy playing with your HDR and stand alone consumer plug-ins. And perhaps if you actually knew what you were talking about in regards to 64 bit and why Windows at present then I would comment on that but you're a waste of time. Asshat.
Looks like you are the one talking out of your rear. The PC users I'm thinking of are film producers and graphic designers actually. Macs are not used nearly as much here in UK as in US.
There are no HDR shots on my site, never even tried it in fact and don't even use plugins in PS either come to think of it. And I certainly do not do Sears type happy portraits either. So what site were you looking at exactly?

So what else did you get wrong? Ah yes - as for why Windows is 64 bit and Mac isn't, I'm fully aware of the reasons and have also been using CS4 for some time now thank you. Though not the 64 bit version as I haven't had to time/inclination to install a 64 bit version of Windows on the Mac just yet.

Besides I never commented on Brad trent's photography, just the daft assertion that everything digital was designed for the Mac first.
I just went to check his work out and kept getting page not found for all the galleries, so I'll have to take your word for it how amazing he is. ;-)

Well honestly...

mac was never for pros...pros have big egos and think they deserve something better...like a mac...

mac portable has allways been for the common person the simple, get thought your tasks person...mac held on to life through pros but now they dont need them anymore so they are slowly gonna start discarding support for the hardcore pro and start supporting people only as advanced as the creative suite...stop whining about the glass screens...its the way it is...they arent that bad...working on them forever and i can edit photos and do website mockups just fine you guys just wanna find something to whine about... whining about what it doesnt have doesnt show how much you know about whats out there...these macbooks are impressive and expensive the mac has allways been

I am livid.

Apple did not listen to the crys from iMac users when they removed the matte option, and now Apple will not listen to MacBook Pro users.

Sales of MBP's will continue to rise, and hence there'll be no reason for Apple to listen to cries from MBP users who love the matte screen.

Centrino 2 is a chipset, whereas Core 2 Duo is the processor. Apple is now using NVIDIA chipsets. Core 2 Duo is still the latest processor technology from Intel (that is available).

Don

alright.. i get it now.. :) thanks for that.. but the current design is still a little hold back.. :( maybe i will just wait for the next revision with snow leopard.. just another few months i assume.. :p

I'm curious to know what everyone is using Firewire for?

I have a Canon Digital Camera, an iPod and an I Phone, I've never had a need for Firewire. What are the types of devices that require it for your average computer user?

How, pray tell, can they have a matte screen without putting plastic in the MacBook/MacBookPro line?

I think a few reflections from the glass are worth saving our planet.

Go Apple! Go Green!

It's not the glare, its that you can't calibrate a glossy screen properly. Bad color=useless for photographers and artists.

The MacBooks still have integrated graphics which is supposedly still only 55% as powerful as the discrete graphics in the MBP.

and didn't Steve-o compare it to the MBP card of the last revision? i.e. the 8600 rather than the 9600? I really can't remember but I thought he did...
