Read the first 6 pages or so.... not really in the market for any of the new products, but I really do have to ask....

What were they thinking when it came to the battery power level on the far left side corner of the Pro's? Wouldn't it have made more sense to put it on top of the keyboard so it can be easily seen? Or just a darn software applet in the dock or something?

I will look forward to seeing the MacPro user tipping their laptops up to see the display.

Its so you can check the battery life without opening or turning the notebook on.

Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology
For Mobile Computing

The best notebooks have Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology insideΔ1

Intel’s NEWEST and BEST performing notebook technology includes:
• Up to 50% faster performance when multitasking‡1
• Up to 2X greater range and up to 5X better wireless performanceΔ2
• Designed for the longest possible battery lifeΔ3
• Up to 90% faster performance on intensive multimedia applications like HD video encoding‡2

does it mean that's a lie???

The bolded parts point out why compared to the Core2Duo it's lacking. They aren't comparing it to a Core2Duo are they? Centrinos are made specifically for laptops - i.e. less powerful/battery hog.

So how are people going to connect their firewire cameras and drives to the new MBs?
Even the MBPros, they have firewire 800. Is there an adapter?

Yes, it is called a FW800->FW400 cable. They can be found pretty easily.

the more i look at the new macbook the more i want to get macbook pro.. but the current design really isn't that great, it really looks like a HP laptop now.. on top of that, i am guessing there will be a price drop/update somewhere before/after the holiday season(maybe snow leopard? or centrino2? or maybe huge price drop? or may even be redesign again!!)

and why are they still using Core 2 Duo?? isn't centrino 2 out??

a little longer wait may result a macbook with snow leopard os to be pre-installed.

should i just wait a little longer?? :( while getting a dell/hp before that? :p

Centrino 2 is a chipset, whereas Core 2 Duo is the processor. Apple is now using NVIDIA chipsets. Core 2 Duo is still the latest processor technology from Intel (that is available).

I suggest that everyone that isn't too pleased about being forced to put up with these kind of reflections

heads over here and at least lets them know about it

Great link, Kungpoo. I think it is important that users voice their opinions, rather than simply complain. I have submitted my own comments, with the understanding that will likely read it and ignore it.

I'm realistic, but I know it doesn't hurt to try.

You can drop it and you're less likely to lose all your porn.

Yeah but your glass screen will break and you'll have to buy a glossy apple external screen and and adaptor for your macbook pro so you can use it :D

Newbie Question

I've been waiting for this day for a long time. I'm a first time Mac buyer, and I am buying a 17" MacBook pro because it has the matte screen option. (It's also a kick-ass system, but the screen is the main selling point). This computer will be used daily by my business.

Is it possible to swap out the HDD in a year for a Solid-state disk???? I want more than 128 GB of storage, so I can't go with this option yet...

Excerpt from a longer post:

The FW400 port on former MBP is nothing more than an FW800->FW400 adapter, there is only one physical FW800 interface in the former MBP that comes with 2 ports. In fact the Agere chipset used in last years MBPs offers even upto 3 ports internally that can be coupled with either a FW800 or FW400 connector.

To clarify that: There were no two independent FW interfaces/busses in the old MBP, but only one!

:apple: is selling their product line at Best Buys and soon Walmart so it should not be a surprise that they are pushing away from the professional users and moving towards a larger customer base.

I have similar complaints as many of us with these revisions. I can't stand my wife's Macbook's glossy screen as it is hard to view from the side. I expect apple will release the MBP with a matte screen in the near future...or else! The death of the firewire port and real DVI port, makes my head shake. These revisions are reminding me of the Macbook Air release and the cynicism I had with the MBA. I still asked myself "Why? What's the point?"

This is terrible...

Steve must have been drunk??
Or...
He wants Apple to die??
Either way I feel sorry for Apple. :(

well back to loving my 3G iPhone
my G4 is saved for another year :)
but seriously being a 3D/Motion Designer, I cant justify the new update.
I need a portable I can lug to sites and clients :p

The reflections aren't that bad considering the 24" iMac I use quite a bit has the same screen. Surprisingly usable.

Still not a fan of glass though

That would be a great idea IF they paid any attention whatsoever, which they don't. INSTANT delete.

Over HERE though, in the court of public opinion, where you have a real chance to influence people? They will never answer (other than a bunch of fake fanboi posts) BUT BELIEVE ME, THEY LISTEN.

:apple:

They answer to consumer demand. If certain people stop buying them, they will change...and they have in the past. Look at all of the things they changed on the iPhone.

Money talks.

The 17" MBP can't have its HDD replaced by the user, without voiding the warranty. Only the "updated" MBP's can have their HDD replaced by the user.

Sure looks like it - just make sure it fits properly. I'm thinking about swapping the current out for a SATA 320GB 7200RPM drive from TigerDirect that's $90...

If you're using the damned computer then you'd know there's a battery indicator in the status icons on the top right - left of the clock. The hardware battery indicator isn't for looking at while you're using the computer, it's for looking at while it's folded up. It's just the same as the current one which is on the underside of the older MacBook Pros.

The humanitarian in me says live long and prosper Steve.

The computer user in me is going to order a Dell Precision 6400. Mobile quad core. 8GB memory. 1GB Quadro 3700. 2 x 320GB raid 0 drives. Blu-ray with a 17" HDMI. eSATA ports. 19x12 matte screen. Maybe I'll be able to do a hackentosh. I wanted to give Apple my money but they didn't want it.

How much would that cost? Like 4000?

He said how do they connect to their new MBs (MacBooks). The MBPs have FireWire 800, but the MBs have no FireWire at all, so that adapter is useless to new MB owners.

I was referring to this part of his post "Even the MBPros, they have firewire 800. Is there an adapter?"

Adpators and more adpators EEEK

Just ordered a new one to replace my dual core MBP, I am not sure if I will like the screen at all, have to wait and give it a try. As for the touchpad that is no big deal, I have used tap to click for ages and pefer it anyway. The only thing that urks me a bit is all the adapters you have to carry, you have to cary one for VGA and one for Digital and you need a 800-400 firewire adapter. I wonder if they plan on a HDMI adapter as many PC laptops are now starting to show up with them.

Good discounts on the old models

Just went and bought the old 15 inch Macbook Pro from the Apple Store. They are discounting them by $400. I didn't think the upgrades were worth the savings and I really wanted the matte screen.

The guy at the store said that the memory change would probably have the most impact unless you were a heavy graphics user. Having said that he hadn't seen the machine yet.

My guess is that they'll run out of the old models pretty quickly, but $400 less than yesterday is a pretty good deal for the old Pros. Basically got the 15 inch at the same price as the same spec macbook.

Hmm, I do a lot of small presentations using keynote on my old matte MBP. I wonder if the glare will be a problem with the new glossy screen if the client is sitting off angle...

I would be interested to see how this thread would look if the notebooks came out as the opposite of what they are today.
Everyone would be whining about no glossy screens, and how glossy is the future, and how much better the colors look....etc.
Do you guys who are so mad think that apple can please everyone?? Do you think that is possible?
The way they are manufacturing the notebooks now, makes it pretty clear that matte would not be an option.
Either way, what's done is done.

I think this is more about personal opinion, it seems like many "pros" are just fine with glossy.

And enough about the recession, I'm guessing this release was planned (along with the prices) before the economy went to crap a few weeks ago.

Adaptors

I was referring to this part of his post "Even the MBPros, they have firewire 800. Is there an adapter?"

Yea you have 2 options a cable that does 800 to 400 or a actual adapter, I chose a adapter that was 14.99 you can find them by doing a quick search for firewire 400 to 800 adapter.

There is hope for excessive whining. Science has found people lack vitamin D. So, get out in the sun, amongst moving and hard-working people who have lives and actual jobs, mortgages and kids. They would kill for a beautiful new aluminum computer.

Of course, they aren't as critical about computers as your are, or about your mother's cooking, or that it takes several mattresses so you can't feel that pesky pea.
