I think the MBP looks OK overall, I'm sure the Graphics will be great and satisfy the gamers, however I'm really not sure about the glossy screens for outside or lights/bulbs reflections inside....
Anyway I've ordered mine earlier as my 1Ghz Powerbook needs replacement.

The design worked okay for the iMac and a little worse for the MBA...

Huh, the MBA obvously has no black bezel or glass screen, how is it like the iMac? If the new MBP screen was just like the MBA's but matte I would have bought this new on in a instant.

Since I have an appointment and the genius bar today and my old Powerbook won't boot, it may be time to upgrade.....

to a Macbook Pro that is now out of date, in stock, and now discounted. :D

I'm curious to know what everyone is using Firewire for?

I have a Canon Digital Camera, an iPod and an I Phone, I've never had a need for Firewire. What are the types of devices that require it for your average computer user?

I used it for video capture back in the days of miniDV. As more and more consumer cams are going file based acquisition, the need for firewire, especially 4/600 is disappearing. That being said, there are still a lot of uses for 800, especially in the pro video world due to its excellent sustained data rates. Copy source media over FW800 onto backup drives in an eSATA raid connected to an esata/ec34 card when dealing with file based cameras.

I was thinking just that.

Then I remembered that my old 19" Lacie CRT monitor came with a massive plastic hood to cut down on reflections and glare:

Maybe Apple could offer this as an optional extra for the pro book users...

I used to own two of those very monitors back when they were $800-a-pop, and used them unhooded - they didn't suffer from glare, because the glass was coated. That was the big selling point of the second-gen laCie blue monitors - the coatings! The current glass iMacs are MUCH MORE REFLECTIVE.

New models look fine to me. Pop in an Expresscard34 Sonnes card and I have four usb ports, a firewire 400, and the fw 800. I l-o-o-v-e glossy.

You should probably check out MacMall before doing something like that - they have crazy good deals on old models.

Actually they are going for about $150 more than the Apple Store is selling them for. I got the 2.4GHz, 200Gb model for $1599, that one looks like it is $1768 on MacMall. Of course they may not have updated it yet.

Good thought though. Last time I did this they only discounted the old models by $200, the $400 discount is pretty good!

I'm glad I got one before this. I HATE glossy with a passion!!! The reflection drives me to the brink of insanity.

I like the way it looks until i'd have to use it. Drives me nuts to see my reflection. I was going to get an iMac but when they only offered glossy, i went for a MBP. Now i'm glad i bought the 17" MBP when i did. (last october). It was a good purchase being not much has changed.

- $1999. 15.4" Glossy Display, 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA 9400M + 9600M, 250GB HD.
- $2499. 15.4" Glossy Display, 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA 9400M + 9600M, 320GB HD.

WTF??
I think it is time to retire Steve before we have another 1984 Macintosh fiasco.

Apple could have ruled the world, but NO! You must be confined to a 9" screen. And you must enjoy NO color. And you must not be able to upgrade. AND you must overpay 3x!
Well, Microsoft was ripe for the railroading of Apple.
It was painful to see how a 7 year lead time of fantastic technology eroded into 3% marketshare.

And here we go again. $2000 to $2499 for a 15" laptop?? WAKE UP APPLE!!!!
You must not get a value 15" laptop for every-day computing (email, surfing, music, word processing) for $800. Like everyone else does.

Once more, you can expect Microsoft to get their act together and let us see Apple be taken apart again because they had to be way too greedy.
Some of you are really delusional, I'm just having a laugh here. :D

I use my FW ports for:

An audio recorder (Sound Devices 722)

HDD as scratch disk

Card reader (Sandisk Extreme)

Audio interface

And, this is actual more often than I'd like: For target mode with another mac, while using another FW hdd.

Have you even used an Aplpe glossy monitor in your workspace? I've never had a problem with my 06 Macbook. I would ask someone to borrow their MB and look at it. The glossy is ALRIGHT!

Geez, and I wonder how you people would have survived on CRT monitors

TBH, I wonder how these people survived mat LCD displays.... When Apple moved over to LCD all these guys cursed Apple because CRT was "the only way"...
Now they are used to mat LCD, and are whining about glossy...
Have you ever tried a decent Apple MacBook Pro glossy? In my experience, when the bright light from behind gets too reflected by the glossy display, it is annoyingly too bright for your mat LCD too.

More focus on the Pro video world - everything there uses Firewire. Transferring data makes far more sense on FW than USB, which is a quarter the sustained speed of FW800. Despite what USB's figures say. ;)

apple is changing..doesnt mean they are loosing it

Hm...

  1. Apple courts the creative users to develop a loyal user base
  2. Apple designs great pro-level products that are overpriced to consumers, but a godsend to Pros
  3. Apple realizes that this quality can be marketed to consumers as well
  4. Apple starts to screw over their pro users through neglect, functional reductions, and reduced choices
  5. Pro Users are now dependant on OS X, and probably have tens of millions of cumulative dollars invested in software licenses for the OS X platform.
  6. What the hell are we supposed to do now that Apple is shafting us?

I have no experience with the glossy screens, still work on the last Powerbook G4, but, I must say: the new MBP looks very nice. I like the option for a 2.8 processor, and the fact that it comes with 4 G standard. Actually, I am already checking for FW800 drives to replace my old 400's.
The new trackpad sounds interesting, I'd have to see it in action.

On the other hand, the latest revs will go fast now. Choices...

As a professional photographer, this was one of the worst announcements from Apple in recent history IMO. I'm so glad that I have the last generation MacBook Pro, because it actually has a trackpad button and a matte screen and doesn't look horrid. When I show my pictures to clients I want the computer to actually look good and show the pictures without glare or reflections, these new MacBook Pros do neither. I have a very hard time fathoming why Apple would do this to their professional customers, it doesn't make sense. I really do hope that Apple sees the error of their ways, although I don't think they will...

glossy isnt as bad as people say...

I don't even care anymore...I don't think I will even follow this site anymore...What was Apple thinking? I've been using a mac since I was 13 years old, a 575 performa...I'm 26 now...13 years later, I have lost hope and respect for Apple. sigh :(

LOL!!!

This was the kind of reaction when Apple went from PPC to Intel.

Sometimes....
LOL

But with a matte display, the background isn't in full focus before your eyes like a mirror. The light is diffused, and while it does create a bright spot, your eyes can still focus on what's on the display and not what's in the room behind you.

People cry that they have to change their eight year old laptop, they change it and they cry some, unfortunately they can't please everybody, they have to do what's good for them and their company.
