Also important to note.. If you need to drive a 30" screen (as I do at school) you need to buy a Mini display Port to Dual Link DVI adapter.. for $99. Oh, and the single link is a $30 adapter... Good thing I can stick with my SR MBP for a while longer. And don't get me started on the glossy screens...

Gotta say, this is a step back in many ways for the MacBook Pro. Though, these features in the MacBooks are pretty impressive, but that is not my market segment :D

I think Apple are giving up on Firewire. Someday, it will be removed from the MacBook Pro as well.
Just take a look at the back of the new Cinema Display... 3 x USB only.

I'm in luck since my external harddrives support both USB and Firewire.

are there any backlit keyboards anymore? Cant find it in the documentation.

That's the only thing that would make me invest into a (used, mind you) Macbook Pro - otherwise it's a hugely overpriced and heavy laptop.
Air is a complete garbage offer, can't imagine anyone sane buying into such an oversized yet dog-slow laptop at such a sky-high price.

I can't believe this. I think Jony just had his first strike at Apple.

Pros do not want glossy screens.

I think the new styling works on the Macbook, because it looks like a mini iMac. That's fine.

It absolutely does not work on the Pro machine. Terrible move in my opinion. I'm so happy I bought a MBP a few weeks ago!

Pro's also do not like TN panels because of the fact they do not natively display all colors.

You're not making any sense, this is garbage. These are Macbook Pros, not new Macbooks - which, by the way, for some reason you've completely forgot to mention:
Glossy/LED/NV9400M/2GB/2.0GHz $1,299
Glossy/LED/NV9400M/2GB/2.4GHz $1,599
For entry there's the untouched White plastic/TFT/iX1300/1GB/2.1GHz for $999

I still haven't figured out the worst part of all the announcements, but this announcement

999 bucks for nearly 1 year old tech

I think this is the biggest POS Apple has done recently.

But hail to the new PB 12" successor, if it only had FW.

Heh glossy all round including the new ACD. Along with the Photoshop 64-bit thing I guess that's the end of Apple's reputation as the computer to use for professional graphics!

Ah well, I don't care. I'm not a professional graphics artist. Apple took a big risk in pulling out of the pro market, let's just see how it goes.

From a personal POV:
- Glossy screen, I'm not too stoked about that but I'll live with it like with the iMac due to the other positives (including those of the glossy screen, I guess).
- Dual graphics chip thing, MAJOR plus, very impressed by that idea.
- Physical construction excellent (will see how it looks in person)
- Trackpad will be interesting to try. Jury is out. I'm sure it'll be ok.
- FW800. Cool.
- Good all-round spec
- Bit pricey, at £100 more than the previous model. That has upset the system a bit. Will manage, just hope the cases don't cost too much!

Looks like the rumours were spot-on.

Wicked expensive... Was hoping they'd get on the "EEE PC" bandwagon and have a small very inexpensive laptop... guess not.

The fact that they even took the time to come up with this new process for creating notebook enclosures makes me think that might be coming up next. Apple does like to do things right so maybe they're working on getting all of the pieces in place before they release one. The new case manufacturing process might have been finished first, and rather than sit on it until the other parts were ready, they used it to make the Air and now the new Pro enclosures.

I've been eying an MSI Wind to replace my EeePC, but now I think I'll wait until January.

What can I say. I'm impressed. But I will check it out at my local apple store before buying it. :) Good job apple.

1300 dollars for 2.0ghz ? Anyone who buys that is out of their mind bonkers with reality distortion fields. I love Apple but this update seems weird.. the 17" was completely neglected. I wish Apple would stick to doing updates when updates are needed rather than this every few months, huge media event, then lukewarm products come rolling out.

On the contrary that's far the best offer out of all newly introduced products: you get a LOT BETTER graphics, a LOT BETTER screen - man, current MB screen is HORRIBLE, SUCKS BIG TIME! - and you only lose some 200MHz clock compared to their price-matched predecessor model.

Well, i for one am happy with the new designs and specifications of the macbook pro :) cant wait to get mine from the apple store tomorrow :D

Pro's buy the 17inch

Well there you go, if you're a "Pro" buy the 17inch MBP, the 13 and 15 are becoming the "consumer" grade machines while the 17inch are for the higher end photo and video guys.

I buy that, it makes sense. And hey, if anyone wants my 2.4 Santa Rose 15inch MBP (with Matte Screen) it's on sale for 2499.00. I'll even leave the 320gb 7200RPM Seagate drive I just installed. ;-)

Ive been waiting for the 17".
Where is the update.

Key point: Using the SAME NVIDIA card of the old model is NOT an update.
Infact...it is the card that is in 'recall'...well, lets say its the card Apple just admitted had issues. (It was both the 8400 and 8600)

Why slower and older graphics cards?
Why not blu ray? Steve said the markets not ready...but stevo, the pros make the market...this isnt macbook - its the macbook(pro).

But hey, its the same company who bought shake and killed it off and hasnt updated their pro suits in who knows how long. Way to go steve...

Peace

So new macbook pro's, which aren't really that amazing in my opinion are now more expensive over-all and a lot more expensive for students (atleast in Canada).

The Macbook Pro's are now 2150 from 2100 in Canada, and the Student discount goes from 200 dollars off to 100 dollars off!! Which means Yesterday a MATTE macbook pro would cost me 1900+tax, now it costs me 2050+tax and I have to deal with a bloody glossy screen. 150 dollar price increase! and no matte option, which for me and a lot of people is a big deal.

In otherwords, these shinanigans cost Steve one sale.

I agree that making glossy screens compulsory is a big mistake: the sooner that less than practical fad dies out the better.

Another mistake they've made is ditching the Firewire 400 port in my view: a fairly common role for an MBP is for video editing (what I do in fact) so having to daisy chain an external scratch disk and a video camera on one port strikes me as a backwards step when I can currently plug a fast external drive into the FW800 and put the video camera in the FW400.

Looks quite pretty though. Sort out the ports and the screen and you've got yourself another winner.

Looks like the 17" is the only option left for Pros who work with color (??)... Glossy really is our worse enemy (artists, photographers, graphic designers, etc...). Too bad, but I don't think a matt display would work with the overall design of the new models from a purely esthetic standpoint.

That said, the new models are impressive IMO; the solid design and glass are indeed sleek. The black keyboard finally brings continunity to the notebook line. I suppose I will upgrade in a few years, and just get myself a good non-glossy external display.

So now the "pro" laptop looks like an iMac.

And I'll hang on to my matte 17" until they get serious and admit they are joking with a HD-only update (and only glossy for 17" too?)..

Apparently the MBA now has a SATA drive instead of a PATA drive. That should translate in quite a bit of performance increase no? Can we expect the SSD performance to go up also with this new interface? MBA is looking more and more like a nice option if money is not too much of an issue.
