Apple Announces New MacBook Pros, Updates MacBook Air

Well there you go, if you're a "Pro" buy the 17inch MBP, the 13 and 15 are becoming the "consumer" grade machines while the 17inch are for the higher end photo and video guys.

I buy that, it makes sense. And hey, if anyone wants my 2.4 Santa Rose 15inch MBP (with Matte Screen) it's on sale for 2499.00. I'll even leave the 320gb 7200RPM Seagate drive I just installed. ;-)

Not with the lame old Nvidia card in there...the very reason I waited to upgrade. - the one on recall which Apple finally admitted had issues.

Who knows, store was down...maybe they saw the mistake. ;)

Peace

Well, as a pro user who's consistently flashed out on top of the range Mac portables for over ten years, i'll be buying a MB for the very first time.

I've had the cash waiting for an MBP, but if i'm not going to be able to do serious work on it because of that screen there's no point carrying the extra bulk.

I can use matte screens and mac pros with firewire in the office and fiddle the best i can with a 13" MB on the road.

Apple make nice products but they've shot themselves in the foot with this screen issue.

Unless you're running multiple crazy video apps non-stop (I'm a tv exec who also edits & does a lot of video graphics manipulation and even I don't do that...), i can't see the point in spending the extra dosh on something with a fundamental flaw.

It seems that Apple is going backwards with designing. Black keys, ugh, Black bezel ugh. And why the hell do I want a glossy screen. So much for watching a movie in the dark with the screen turned down.

Im dissapointed. I was hoping for a quad core imac.
Both Asus and Lenovo has come out with a quad core laptop
with intels new quad core mobile cpu's, why not imac ??

I like to think of it as Glass and not glossy ;)

Have people forgotten that designers used to work with Glass (reflective) CRT Monitors back in the day. ;)

Hello, I am a PC. And I am a SUCKER!!!

- $1999. 15.4" Glossy Display, 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA 9400M + 9600M, 250GB HD.
- $2499. 15.4" Glossy Display, 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA 9400M + 9600M, 320GB HD.

WTF??
I think it is time to retire Steve before we have another 1984 Macintosh fiasco.

Apple could have ruled the world, but NO! You must be confined to a 9" screen. And you must enjoy NO color. And you must not be able to upgrade. AND you must overpay 3x!
Well, Microsoft was ripe for the railroading of Apple.
It was painful to see how a 7 year lead time of fantastic technology eroded into 3% marketshare.

And here we go again. $2000 to $2499 for a 15" laptop?? WAKE UP APPLE!!!!
You must not get a value 15" laptop for every-day computing (email, surfing, music, word processing) for $800. Like everyone else does.

Once more, you can expect Microsoft to get their act together and let us see Apple be taken apart again because they had to be way too greedy.

I was looking forward to replacing this old g4 ibook, but am so un-impressed by this update that I'll hold off. THose things either do not photograph well, or they're just UGLY. For the first time in ages I'm considering a non-apple purchase, maybe a linux netbook, and wait to see if Apple gets the next rev. right. For the heavy lifting I have a mac pro, for the rest I'm more and more considering moving to the cloud. These lame new FW-less macbooks make me think even mroe seriously about that option.

The Good:
The new MacBooks look awesome. I want one.

The Bad:
I was hoping for an inexpensive Netbook or reduced entry level laptop. I bought a Toshiba laptop for my wife a few weeks ago for just $399 and I have to admit it's a pretty nice machine. It's tough to justify spending 3 times that amount on a Mac laptop no matter how cool they are.

Apple please consider getting in the entry level game.

This is a sad day for me - I just sent out a memo to my co-workers and the heads of the departments that they should tell me if they are planning on purchasing MBPs in the near future - I'll try to find some of the previous models with matte displays for them. Unfortunately, work-place ergonomics regulations here in Switzerland prevent us from purchasing glossy screens for full-time employees.

That's it folks - we're saying goodbye to Apple at work :-(

MacBooks Pros are expensive but if they have the features you want the price is secondary. I have not seen or used a glossy screen that I like and I doubt this offering will be up to a matte screen. So now the price becomes an issue. What a shame.

Why don't any MacBooks have card readers the market has settled down now and all the major flash cards can be accommodated in one slot. Is this too much to ask?

I planned to buy a mbp and then a expressport card reader and I would be happy. But no glassy screen means I'm looking at PCs. I so wanted to return to Mac after 16 years in PC land.

My thoughts on the glossy screen

I am still convinced that the people in charge are doing what they think is best for the company. For this to be true I am almost positive that Apple has sold far more MBPs in the past year with glossy screens than they have with matte screens. I'm thinking it just happens that a ton of the minority matte-users happen to read this forum. And while it does suck for all those who think matte is superior, from a business perspective they think it will be more profitable to only produce one and potentially lose some pro sales. Time will tell if that's right but with the recent popularity of the MBP at schools I don't think this is such a bad move from an economic perspective. The price points, of course, are another story entirely...

Nice update, especially the switchable GPU's. However, I was kind of expecting BluRay in there. It's about time now the HDDVD / BluRay war is over and I could really use the BluRay backup space...

It seems that Apple is going backwards with designing. Black keys, ugh, Black bezel ugh. And why the hell do I want a glossy screen. So much for watching a movie in the dark with the screen turned down.

So they can introduce the new one next Spring, with matching keys. ;)

I agree, it's ugly when only keys are black.

What I liked even more than that was when he said that you could just turn the notebook to not reflect off of the glass over the screen. BRILLIANT! Just offer a matte option, seriously.

I rolled in my grave at that, and I'm not even dead yet.

I have to say I'm rather dismayed at the thought that they're moving towards having trackpads with no physical button! I guess they reckon that most people tap to click, but I'm definitely not one of them; I disabled the tap-to-click function minutes after I first really tried to use the trackpad (I kept accidentally clicking when I was just repositioning my fingers, and at other times I wanted to click, but had to tap much harder)! Whereas with just the trackpad button, I can click when I want, and use the track area just for tracking. Frankly, I hope it goes the way of the 3gen nano form factor, unless they have managed to configure the taps MUCH better than on previous laptops (ie not just adding new movements)

I'm also not too keen on the macbooks being silvery too. I know there were people endlessly whining about the white plastic enclosure and calling it everything from outdated to ugly, but I never agreed with that: I think the black and white laptops were very different and unique, they were less cold than the new aluminium style, and quite unlike anything else you could see, and that is now lost, at least for now; I suppose if we all complain loudly enough, they might decide to change that again, like it seems to have gone down with the square nanos. I am definitely glad I got to have the white one before the change though, and now it makes me even more paranoid about taking good care of it so I can keep it for years to come, as I really don't like the idea of the aluminium ones!

That said, I guess I may well get used to the new ones *shrug* But the first impression is not so positive. The big hard drives are sure to be a hit though!

these new macs and displays are bloody ugly, the old aluminium looks much better.
So true.

I wonder if it is better to wait for the 17-inch Pro to get updated or to get one (or a better PC) right now, I mean—they have updated it so it is actually cheaper at the moment than it was before today, but it still lacks great stuff like faster FSB and RAM; on the other hand, the next revision will likely bring (but might also not) all that ugliness and feature/option-stripping.
