Glossy doesn't require the sun to be reflective. Its reflective with any amount of light. That light can be in an office, in a bedroom, in a kitchen, ANYWHERE. That's the problem. When I'm working on a graphics project I'll occasionally shift in my seat to get more comfortable, I don't want to have to shift my notebook as well and angle it correctly before I have to get back to work. Hell I wouldn't even want to do it before I get started, I would just want to open up and go.
The problem isn't that products are changing, its that this is a redesign and from this first step Apple will only improve upon previous designs. If the matte option wasn't included in the initial conception I doubt it will be included with later products. That's terrible news for someone like me, who used to have a glossy MB but switched to a matte MBP about a year later and did not look back. If I were Apple I would just move these new MBPs into the MB line (remove the "Pro" name) and focus on designing a whole new set of actual Pro machines.
So stop sounding like a fanboy and actually see where people are coming from in their criticisms. The construction is a solid step forward, but the lack of key options for Pro users is severely lacking.
Overall interesting update. I wouldn't say that I am disappointed, because I am still fine with my MBP I got back in January of '07. Overall though, I think I will wait until the next revision before I even consider upgrading.
First off I really think the MBP is a bit ugly. While the black bezel helps offset the ugly black keyboard in my opinion, it still just doesn't go with the aluminum casing (but that's just me). Plus, with the lack of the trackpad button, the lack of the silver latch on the front and the visible IR receiver, I think the laptop just looks way too simple! I think Apple's ideas of simple designs is nice, but now they are just taking it a bit too far for my liking. After all, if I spend $1999 for a laptop I'd like it to look at least a little bit expensive.
The price is the next problem I have with it. It just seems too expensive for what you are getting. When I bought my MBP, I did so because I felt there was nothing else even close to it, and thus I was willing to fork over $2,000. Now, I think that many PC manufacturers have begun to close the gap. There are many more PC products out there that are beginning to look appealing. I still think Apple's laptops are better, but it seems like they would want to make it a bit more competitive. And going further, I'm not sure I'd even buy the MBP. The MB, being much cheaper, has the same look to it, basically the same features, just a bit less performance. Frankly if I had to buy an Apple laptop tomorrow I'd go with that and just save some cash.
Also a bit confused why they left the white MacBook and 17 inch MBP with their old design, but oh well. Overall I'd have to say that this isn't really better, its just different (maybe even worse).
My gripe is that macbook pros look like macbooks now. Nothing is special anymore.![]()

Hey People this has just been posted on engadget, is Jonathan Ive in a video that shows how the new MacBooks are manufactured...Cheers!!!

But evidently, not enough people care to force Apple to offer a choice. Remember, Mac Rumors contains a huge minority of technically inclined people. Even the vast majority of people buying the MacBook Pro don't give a rat's ass about glossy screens. Apple needs to sell as many computers as possible, and they'd be offering a choice if MBP sales suddenly fell flat.Watch the video on the Apple site. When they open up the MacBook, the keys are reflected in the screen as if it were a mirror. Anybody who doesn't see that doesn't even need a screen because they are blind!
Is there some technical reason why Apple cannot offer a choice? Would a matte screen be thicker requiring a different lid design? I don't doubt that a majority prefer the glossy screen (even though I can't understand that) but I don't believe that the matte preference is a small number of customers or potential customers. If not for the screen, I would consider buying a new one, even though I think they're too expensive and butt ugly. I buy a computer to use more than to look at ascetically. But this glossy screen is just unusable on a laptop as far as I'm concerned. Evidently, a lot of people agree.
If you didn't know... Mac OS X uses a kernel called Darwin that is open source and based on BSD Unix. However, the APIs, media layers and the Aqua user interface are not open source and owned by Apple.if you didnt know... UNIX is the backbone to OSX........
can someone please explain why the glossy screen controversy cant be resolved by a simple screen cover?
As if somehow a unibody frame compensates for sucky features and rather high prices?

Like I said in another thread, this is just a big bloody pile of bs.
Perhaps Steve's illness has handicapped his creativity and logic.
Except your MacBook Pro still has a FireWire 800 port, a larger display with superior resolution, two (superior) GPU and superior BTO options. So what if the MacBook and the MacBook Pro look the same? It's called giving the consumer what they want. Did you even watch the keynote? It was made clear that MacBook consumers wanted a metal enclosure, and that's what they got. Apple exists by its consumers who are willing to spend lots of money on the MacBook, not a few whiny "professionals" who feel less special because they define their lives by their precious aluminum MacBook Pro.My gripe is that macbook pros look like macbooks now. Nothing is special anymore.
The job gets done with my good ol' MBP, and its soo pretty.
Exactly. If you don't like the glossy screen, get one of the thousands of matte screen covers that exist for the sole purpose of minimizing the (minimal) glare. It can. It is not a big deal. For some reason, people are choosing to use this as a scapegoat issue to justify their wait for the next revision, only to find something else to nitpick about.
