Apple please!

Give your pro users a matte display option or let another company build a better computer that runs the Mac OS. This update is a BIG middle-finger in the face to artists, musicians, photographers and others creatives. WHAT are you thinking?

How is this possible

How is it possible that Apple has walked away from the matte option. I'm working on a 23" Cinema Display and and MBP w/Matte option. I can't stand the shadow. I'm a graduate student at UCI - I'm NOT alone. Has Apple become so arrogant and successful that it can abandoned the pro market like this? Even more remarkable is the video the produced for the new MacBook - it's a high quality video featuring J. Ivie - when they show the video quality (an Iron Man clip) there is a HUGE shadow cutting across the screen - I'm at a lost....

Very disappointed and this is the ONLY time I've ever been unhappy with a new product. I don't feel this is wining.

IMPORTANT TO ME:

Do you guys think that the new MacBook will be able to run Microsoft Flight Simulator X or will it struggle?

I'd rather not get the Pro ...

Glossy doesn't require the sun to be reflective. Its reflective with any amount of light. That light can be in an office, in a bedroom, in a kitchen, ANYWHERE. That's the problem. When I'm working on a graphics project I'll occasionally shift in my seat to get more comfortable, I don't want to have to shift my notebook as well and angle it correctly before I have to get back to work. Hell I wouldn't even want to do it before I get started, I would just want to open up and go.

The problem isn't that products are changing, its that this is a redesign and from this first step Apple will only improve upon previous designs. If the matte option wasn't included in the initial conception I doubt it will be included with later products. That's terrible news for someone like me, who used to have a glossy MB but switched to a matte MBP about a year later and did not look back. If I were Apple I would just move these new MBPs into the MB line (remove the "Pro" name) and focus on designing a whole new set of actual Pro machines.

So stop sounding like a fanboy and actually see where people are coming from in their criticisms. The construction is a solid step forward, but the lack of key options for Pro users is severely lacking.

Before the whiners and yourself go discounting the new display, don't you think you need to see it in person. You are comparing it to the cheap low-res, non-LED backlit, glossy displays of the old MB.

Have you ever worked with a MBA? It has a high-res, LED, backlit display and it is beautiful and performs well in most lighting situations. Most of the reflections that you see in photos of glossy displays are a result of photographing a glossy display. To the user, the reflections are barely noticeable.

I think the biggest reason people see this as a big loss, is that for the last year or two, some have hung on to the misconception that Apple displays were better than Sony Vaio displays because Apple displays were professional matte displays while Sony used LED glossy displays. The fact is that Sony was ahead of Apple in display technology and now Apple is finally catching up.

where is Matt screen option?! yes, i understand consumer like this, but as a pro I really hate Matt screen.

where is blu-ray? yes...dont tell me to go to iTunes to download HD movies...i need the burner!

where is Firewire?! steve are u telling me to throw away my external drives?!

display port? are you kidding me? give me a display port to HDMI converter!!!

I have to agree on the esthetics. Both the MB and MBP look like boring PC's. I never thought I'd say that!

Eliminating FW on the macbook is completely unacceptable. I feel really comfortable with my blackbook after this announcement. Won't be upgrading for years anyway.

Overall interesting update. I wouldn't say that I am disappointed, because I am still fine with my MBP I got back in January of '07. Overall though, I think I will wait until the next revision before I even consider upgrading.

First off I really think the MBP is a bit ugly. While the black bezel helps offset the ugly black keyboard in my opinion, it still just doesn't go with the aluminum casing (but that's just me). Plus, with the lack of the trackpad button, the lack of the silver latch on the front and the visible IR receiver, I think the laptop just looks way too simple! I think Apple's ideas of simple designs is nice, but now they are just taking it a bit too far for my liking. After all, if I spend $1999 for a laptop I'd like it to look at least a little bit expensive. ;)

The price is the next problem I have with it. It just seems too expensive for what you are getting. When I bought my MBP, I did so because I felt there was nothing else even close to it, and thus I was willing to fork over $2,000. Now, I think that many PC manufacturers have begun to close the gap. There are many more PC products out there that are beginning to look appealing. I still think Apple's laptops are better, but it seems like they would want to make it a bit more competitive. And going further, I'm not sure I'd even buy the MBP. The MB, being much cheaper, has the same look to it, basically the same features, just a bit less performance. Frankly if I had to buy an Apple laptop tomorrow I'd go with that and just save some cash.

Also a bit confused why they left the white MacBook and 17 inch MBP with their old design, but oh well. Overall I'd have to say that this isn't really better, its just different (maybe even worse).

Look at this

this is what I'm talking about - there is even a shadow in the promo!!!!

I wondered about three things immediately after reading the announcement.

How do I hold down the "mouse" button if my finger reaches the edge of the trackpad and I can't let go of the cursor or else I will lose my selection on the screen?

How about replacing the "Kensington lock slot" with a Firewire port?

How resistant are these new laptops to moisture, extreme temperatures, and vibrations?

My gripe is that macbook pros look like macbooks now. Nothing is special anymore. :(

So sad for the Starbucks Posers.

OSX is not an open source OS!

I said
unix_icon20071009.gif
, not open source.

In fact, open source Linux systems have much better graphics support than
unix_icon20071009.gif
systems for the most part. (None that I've seen have worse support than a
unix_icon20071009.gif
system.)

Have you ever tried to switch a
unix_icon20071009.gif
system from 1024x768@66 to 1280x1024@72. I'd rather have a root canal job.

MacBook Pro promo movie

Watch the video on the Apple site. When they open up the MacBook, the keys are reflected in the screen as if it were a mirror. Anybody who doesn't see that doesn't even need a screen because they are blind!

Is there some technical reason why Apple cannot offer a choice? Would a matte screen be thicker requiring a different lid design? I don't doubt that a majority prefer the glossy screen (even though I can't understand that) but I don't believe that the matte preference is a small number of customers or potential customers. If not for the screen, I would consider buying a new one, even though I think they're too expensive and butt ugly. I buy a computer to use more than to look at ascetically. But this glossy screen is just unusable on a laptop as far as I'm concerned. Evidently, a lot of people agree.

But evidently, not enough people care to force Apple to offer a choice. Remember, Mac Rumors contains a huge minority of technically inclined people. Even the vast majority of people buying the MacBook Pro don't give a rat's ass about glossy screens. Apple needs to sell as many computers as possible, and they'd be offering a choice if MBP sales suddenly fell flat.

????????

can someone please explain why the glossy screen controversy cant be resolved by a simple screen cover?

if you didnt know... UNIX is the backbone to OSX........
If you didn't know... Mac OS X uses a kernel called Darwin that is open source and based on BSD Unix. However, the APIs, media layers and the Aqua user interface are not open source and owned by Apple.

As if somehow a unibody frame compensates for sucky features and rather high prices?

Ahh, come on Aiden. I know you. You are too educated to take a cheap shot like that and you wouldn't like the MBP no matter what features it contained.

Besides at this point in time, there is not a lot of new tech that Apple could have included in the MBP. About the only thing that could have been added that wasn't was blu-ray and Steve seems to have a problem with the blu-ray licensing issues.

Of course Apple is higher priced! This is nothing new. Apple doesn't have the advantage of the volumes that Dell does to reduce cost. Also Apple uses the extra margins to fund R&D and new product ventures. They are never going to be a discount computer vendor.

It can. It is not a big deal. For some reason, people are choosing to use this as a scapegoat issue to justify their wait for the next revision, only to find something else to nitpick about.

Like I said in another thread, this is just a big bloody pile of bs.

Perhaps Steve's illness has handicapped his creativity and logic.

And to think I was worried that my 512 2.4 MBP would be worth nothing.
:p

For once, like the iPhone 1.0, I am actually glad I didn't sell my Macbook Pro.

Not sure about others, but for me, anyone noticed he didn't talk about the ports on the Macbook? I guess a Macbook will be cool now that I can probably run games and pro app's on it, but the design of the current macbook pro is the best, sorry. The old powerbook vibe with a glossy only (although mine is glossy, (( also had a matte macbook pro for 6 months )), just isn't my cup of tea, it just doesn't do anything for me.

Maybe at $1499 for the 2.4/2.6, and that's a maybe. I think a macbook might be in the list for me down the road, but not now and probably a mac pro anyway.

The job gets done with my good ol' MBP, and its soo pretty.
Except your MacBook Pro still has a FireWire 800 port, a larger display with superior resolution, two (superior) GPU and superior BTO options. So what if the MacBook and the MacBook Pro look the same? It's called giving the consumer what they want. Did you even watch the keynote? It was made clear that MacBook consumers wanted a metal enclosure, and that's what they got. Apple exists by its consumers who are willing to spend lots of money on the MacBook, not a few whiny "professionals" who feel less special because they define their lives by their precious aluminum MacBook Pro.

Exactly. If you don't like the glossy screen, get one of the thousands of matte screen covers that exist for the sole purpose of minimizing the (minimal) glare.

The lack of a physical FireWire port on the new MacBook models is arguably the only true downside to the revision, but again, the simple fact is that most consumers aren't the type who would ever use FireWire. USB 2 is far more popular for a multitude of reasons, and that's what most consumers are using.
