I'm not a pro, but a matte display was one of the reasons I elected to purchase a MBP over a MB. I figured my glasses reflect badly enough.

Theoretically, you should be able to put a piece of packing tape on the glass and pull it off like on the iMacs, but I have a better idea. How's about we start an online petition for matte displays and send it to Apple? Perhaps if we get several thousand people they'll listen.

Glossy screen a deal breaker

The only Mac I would buy now would be the Mini. Then I could add my own matte screen. I just cannot believe Mac does not offer a laptop with a matte screen! Insanity. Some people like the glossy. Good for them. I prefer not to see my own reflection when I am using my computer. A desktop can be positioned to avoid the glare, but not a laptop. Using a glossy screen in a moving vehicle is a nightmare!!!! It gives me a headache just to think about it. I will NOT buy a laptop with the glossy screen!!!!!!!!!

Also, what is it with these prices? I know Apple will sell lots of these ugly things, but I am not drinking the Cool Aid.

The one-piece body is nice. The glass trackpad? Not sure about that. The DVD slot on the side? OK, but I really like it in front. No big deal though. The black keys? Ugly in my opinion. Looks like a 6 or 7 year old Sony to me. But that's not a deal breaker. The price? Disappointing. I can afford it but feel that Apple is price gouging like another big company we know whose name includes the letters MS. The glossy screen? NO. NO. NO. NO. NO.

All around, this laptop is a bust, imo. I am happy for all you guys who like this, but I now consider Apple no longer the "coolest" computer. It is still the best built with the best OS. But now this is butt-ugly imo. May as well buy a Dell or three. If it lasts 1/3 as long, I could buy 3 of the ugly things for the price of one ugly MacBook Pro. I think I'll read up on how to put Mac OS X on a PC. Can that be done?

I'm glad I got one before this. I HATE glossy with a passion!!! The reflection drives me to the brink of insanity.

Didn't you guys hear what Steve said? Only a Very small minority want the matte display. :D

I'm not a pro, and I hadn't yet decided between the matte and the glossy for my next laptop. I've been following the MacRumors debate carefully, hoping to learn something. Apparently, that's a moot point now.

And, This Dude says that the LED makes up for the glare. I was thinking about a matte too, but I would have gone with a glossy anyways for the difference in color. I can hook it up to my matte 24" display if I need "realistic" colors.

I’ve found that the bright LED-lit screen could overpower just about every bright, glaring location you could think of.

I wish there was someway I could rent the new MBP for a few days just to see how bad the glare would be in my normal work situation. :(

That idea's already come up. And once again, I'm in.

Last night when leaked photos and info of these came out I was just as unhappy as everyone else. I even posted a hateful comment or two. ;) But I've had a change of heart, and I think a lot of people are being a bit unreasonable about all this. There are some things Apple could've done better with regard to the personal preferences of some people. Still, these new notebooks seem remarkably well made and are quite beautiful (to me, anyway). Honestly, I think all the negativity on these forums was going to happen no matter what Apple released. Many of us have come to expect an iPhone-like revolution every time Steve takes the stage. Come on, guys. Give Apple a break. They still produce amazing products.

these temper tantrums are ridiculous!

what's with all the whining??? i don't see what's wrong with putting a thin film over your computer (you can make a glossy screen matte but you cant make a matte screen glossy.. it's common sense).

the computers look amazing. get over yourselves. its lame.

+ ditto what gadgetguy08 said

i know that the gloss part is a big let down to many of us(including myself).. but the firewire section is just irrelevant? USB3.0 is coming out by next year?? do some google search about "usb3.0"?

"A Super-Speed (USB 3.0) rate of 4.8 Gbit/s (600 MB/s). The USB 3.0 specification was released by Intel and its partners in August 2008, according to early reports from CNET news. According to Intel, bus speeds will be 10 times faster than USB 2.0 due to the inclusion of a fibre-optic link that works with traditional copper connectors. Products using the 3.0 specification are likely to arrive in 2009 or 2010."

I am not so worry about Firewire in comparison to usb 3.0!?!? what if the next update have an usb3.0 port in it?

After a year of waiting I just ordered the 15" 2.8GHz, 320GB Serial ATA @ 7200 MBP. As an artist, I'm not sure I'll be happy with a glossy screen, but it hasn't bothered me when I've sat down with an MBA. Still, I wish they had given "professionals" the option. Sigh.

Deciding to go all out, I also pre-ordered the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium, a new Airport Extreme, and applecare. Thank the Gods for educational discounts! It makes waking up to teach painting tomorrow morning so much sweeter! :)

I'm in the disappointed camp.

The new machines don't add much to excite me (the new video card is just playing catch-up IMO), losing a few things I use (Firewire), and hiking the prices (as a bonus, being in Australia we get whacked with an extra 15% margin to "cover currency fluctuations"; curiously I don't recall seeing prices discounted when the $A was about 30% higher).

I started making the move to Apple a couple of years ago and was looking forward to updating my old G4 iBook. Not this year, and if next year isn't any better I'll probably make my next notebook a Windoze machine and restrict my Mac usage to the desktop.

I'd like to know what you video guys are considering as alternate options instead of the MacBook Pro. I'm a graphic designer, I don't do video editing, but I do love my FW 400 connection for target mode and I hate this glossy display nonsense. So what kind of machines are you considering? If they don't change the MacBook Pros in the next year or so, when I'm ready to buy a new one, I'd consider switching to a PC.

Almost all my work is done on desktop systems but I have edited on set a few times using my G4 Powerbook. The last time that happened was in June of this year and I used a FW800 drive to hold my media. I need to try the glossy screen to see if it bugs me but I don't think I'm going to switch to a PC with all its headaches if I wish I had a matte screen.
